The K1 Permanent Match is now available to order from www.survivalking.co.uk website.
Due to high demand please join my list to get details on availability eepurl.com/QFtcP
How to properly build a Permanent Match. Tear down, hand finish and rebuild. Taking the normal metal match and stripping it down, adding quality wick, o-rings and finishing the whole thing off to a high standard.
This is the first stage when I build the K1 Permanent Match which is available in May.

Wow, didn't even add lighter fluid and light it up to see if anything was different than the original. I have a couple of these and they all still work after years and I have never done this.

It is a bit of work but for me I upgraded initially because I use this device most days for one reason or another. Fact is out the box the normal permanent match isn't really up to that usage, the wick and the seal more than anything, and it has a lot of sharp edges. Just thought it would be nice to turn it into something special that lasted. The one I use has lasted three years so far, haven't changed the wick and it has never lost a drop of fuel through evaporation because of the large seal. Thanks for watching.

I've never really considered the K1 Permanent Match as anything but a survival tool but loads of people have emailed me about it being the ultimate fridge bling. Funny thing is everybody that see's my beloved K1 on the fridge at home says the same. Fridge Bling that can start fires, just keep it high up else your kids will be trying it out.

So was it better? Or just a tinker time video? Sure it looks better but…. Well guess it didn’t preform better or you would have shown the difference. Anyway enjoyed the video.

Hi Rob, I don't have a lot of experience with the vintage lighters but from the photos I've seen they follow exactly the same construction short falls that the more modern metal matches have. The match that I use as the foundation for the K1 Permanent Match is the generic match manufactured in China and I very much doubt the materials and manufacturing techniques have changed at all in the last 50 years. The modifications that I make to the match just make it easier to use and very reliable once you have the knack of striking it. Hope this helps some Rob,

Heh-heh. I have a couple of these very lighters on the way from eBay sellers. I think they are probably of a superior plastic. I'm thinking of making my own outer sheath from brass sheeting. It would be easy.

Thanks for the awesome, well-edited, and highly informative tutorial. I will definitely be getting one of these cheap Chinese lighters and modifying it. Have you ever tried using fiberglass wicking to avoid the burn-out problem with the wick? That seems to be the Achilles heel of these lighters, and replacing the wick looks like a real PITA.

SurvivalKingK1 Gee that's a bit disappointing. Did you try both braided and twisted type silica wicks? BTW why don't you do an Instructable on this? That would be way cool.

Hia. Im in the process of relaunching the K1 Permanent match very soon in three variations, plain metal (£14) and red or yellow reflective glint (£15.50) the magnetic version of the match will be suspended for now. These prices include international shipping. Thanks for your interest, I've been using my K1 match for three years every day and minus a few magnets its never let me down, and re-fueled it a handful of times in all those years.

Nice job, but it would have been even better if you had shown it to BE better in some way. For instance showing that it lights quicker and the resulting flame burns with more intensity might have been a help to your viewers!

is there a way to replace its flint just incase it runs out of flint rod?
@angelus_solus
@angelus_solus 3 жыл бұрын
You could try putting the unit in a vice and tap against the base of the leftover rod with something like a nail set and a small hammer until it busts loose. It is risky and delicate operation though.

@SurvivalKingK1
@SurvivalKingK1 9 жыл бұрын
Ardie Reitsma Hia. You can use any braided cotton wick as long as its the correct thickness, just that I found that Milfords is a very good quality wick. Hope this helps, thanks for watching
@ESAPOWER
@ESAPOWER 7 жыл бұрын
Any fibrous material with suitable wicking properties will do the trick - the thing that makes or breaks a wick in any device - this included - is its ability to parse the fluid up into the flame by convection. You could use a strip of cotton and it'd likely still work.

Hia, Any type of brained cotton wick will do the job well, you can get these from eBay, depending on what you want to spend. I use Milford's Braided unbleached wick 1.5mm, (one either side of the striking plate) which is a UK manufactured wick material, search for this on eBay, it's the best. Hope this helps, good luck, thanks for watching and glad you like my K1 matches. Ant

I'm having a hard time finding 1.5mm braided cotton wicks online. Would a 1.5mm braided silica wick work well "quality"?
@SurvivalKingK1
@SurvivalKingK1 10 жыл бұрын
***** Hia, Silica or any type of glass wick will not work well with the permanent match, I've tried many types and they to fragile for the striker. Cotton is the best way to go, it might take a bit of searching to get a good 1.5 mm wick but they are out there. Are you US based, I'll have a look around for you. If you want me to send some over I can, I'll figure out postage for you, might be a bit expensive for a bit of wick though.

Wow, glad I found this again after I deleted my last channel. Edit: I just thought of this. A deburring tool or a metalworker's countersink will smooth out the inside ends of the tubing really quick and real well.
