When making music for games, how can we honor and learn from the tradition of impermanent music?

Awesome. Does anyone know if there are games that employ music 'engines'? By that I mean, a game that doesn't play the action music .wav when you get into a firefight, but dynamically creates music based on certain conditions i.e. increase the bpm when x happens.

A lot of recent Nintendo games uses multitracks songs and can add some effects to the sound to change the ambiance after an event. I think there are some of those mixer/engine mecanics in The Floor Is Jelly too
