Linux has standard POSIX permissions, but if that's not enough, you can add in ACLs for more fine-tuned user and group specific stuff. PLUS, you can use attributes to really fine tune what can and can't be done.
There are also some non-permission based nuances in the form of SUID, GUID, and the Sticky Bit. Linux is flexible, and at times overwhelming. This video should help clarify some of the more confusing aspects of file management!
