Just a gentle reminder. You are very fortunate - you have a strong relationship with each other, you have two healthy and happy children, you live in a beautiful part of the world, you have positive and curious spirits, you have the opportunity to travel. Yes, you work hard as do most people. Life doesn't always go according to the timetable we want it to. Life can be frustrating sometimes. It is hard to be patient. It is hard to remember to be grateful. Wishing you continued happiness and good fortune. 👍

They went through their own problems too. I am sure at certain point things didn't look great for each other. Raising 2 children while rebuilding a old home is stressful and it can bring slot of problems to a relationship. But they knew how to solve it. That's the difference. They are not fortunate in my opinion, they are wise.

Dear Tara. How your positive spirit changed. At the beginning, when you bought the farm, you were in love in the property, you didn't even speak about new house. Suddenly you don't see the future without new house. P.s You could conect both houses with a "bridge" and get a lot of space. Greetings from Switzerland.

Places like Puerto Rico have highly regulated governmental structural systems with lethargic and non focussed beauracracy making the deliverance painfully slow and frustrating. However, one can only suggest the future strategy because the depression and frustration u r suffering for none of your faults may b very taxing . So u may hang on till u feel , say, utterly hopeless and it seems to vitiate ur future plans.

I started watching the Newbys way back when. You were traveling around the world in a small van. At about 7 weeks of age, Crusoe joined you. Even though your house is small, it is bigger than that van. Your boys don't know anything other than small. Don't give up your land. Even if the worst happens and you can't build, you can make it work. I have faith in your creativity.❤

We agree. We are building here in the Serra de Aire e Candeeiros park and it has taken twice as long as we were led to believe. But…this is Portugal. Things will take much longer than you are used to. You will need to accept that, otherwise you will tie yourselves in knots. At least you have John, we both have no DIY experience and could not afford to make mistakes, so rely heavily on Portuguese trades who do things very differently! We are just starting to move in and we are over the moon generally. We will need to do some finishing and cosmetics that are not up to our standards, but we are willing and able to risk a bit, once the builders have finished.

Thinking outside the box! Connect the two houses with a walk way that would connect the second story floors and making a covered area over the front gates that you would be able to walk under. By doing this you will have enough room for bedrooms, bathrooms, and living space and play area. I hope you understand or can visualize what I’m suggesting.

Oh dear friends I feel your frustrations! We bought an Amish house (no indoor plumbing or electrical)15 years ago and had to wait for ages for approvals on things and permits. But we made it through by the grace of God. I think about those times often, when my boys were little and making shadow puppets on the wall from the flickering oil lamps we had for lights.... going to bed at dark and waking up at dawn. Our children helped so much and even though it was hard and so frustrating at times then.... it brought us to now.... happy and safe in our home. I will keep positive thoughts and prayers for you all. Hoping those municipalities get on the ball for you all and you start receiving good news soon!

Hi John, trained plumber here. Water will take the path of least resistance so with the open end on the pipe, the water will whizz by the holes further up the pipe. If you restrict the end it will allow the pressure to build up along the length of the pipe & should then cause it to flow out of the holes along the length. Balancing pressure & equal flow is always a tricky thing to get right. Possibly installing extra taps where you can increase or decrease the amount you open the taps can help, just like balancing the flow for radiators

Also, it looked like you had the upper tap open during the testing, which pulls more air into the line. Close it and you'll get better pressure below to the garden around the lawn.
@irili100
@irili100 Ай бұрын
Dear John, when watering a garden with drippers, the line should be separate from the direct water line. In order to have a constant water pressure at the beginning and at the end, you must have a separate faucet with a pressure regulator filter especially for drippers. The holes you made are not fit for purpose. You must insert eyedroppers into the holes. Increasing the holes will increase the problem of uniform pressure along the pipe. A 25 or 32 diameter pipe is used for the main line and a 20 or 16 diameter pipe for the drip. I am a gardener in the Mediterranean region

Have a look on easygardenirrigation for 360 degree micro bubblers. Work out your flow rate (measure how much water comes out of your tap in one minute and multiply it up) and then you can work out how many ‘water outlets’ you have have off one line - wether that be drip line, micro bubblers or similar. I do the irrigation plans for my husbands garden design company and it takes a bit of maths.

Hello Newby's family...remember my last comment...in Portugal everything takes time and patience, a lot of patience, especially building permits for housing. What usually happens is that people build first and then apply for the respective permits, but being an agricultural reserve makes the procedures more delicate. Guys this is perfectly normal for Portugal. And they always tell you it won’t take long. The Portuguese are lovely people but they do have a habit of telling you what you want to hear rather than a more realistic estimate of the time things take. Bureaucracy moves at an absolutely glacial pace here. And one slow step at a time at that. I know it’s insanely frustrating, but in my experience it’s best just to accept it and enjoy your lives or you’re going to give yourselves ulcers or something stressing about it. You already have permission from the people who are often harder to get permission from. But the câmaras are super slow and now it’s August so everyone’s gone on holiday. I’d suggest maybe get your architect to give them a wee push at the beginning of September?

@@TheNewbys also … with the drip system, I’d use the 15mm pipe designed for it (not the leaky hose as they tend to silt or slime up very easily) rather than the larger diameter supply pipe you’re using. You can get pipe with 30cm gaps between holes or 50cm. And you put a stop at the end so the pressure equalises across all the holes.

I’ve lived in Portugal. But it’s not about what country one lives in. Shelter should take precedence if your intent is to spend your life there. Then you are able to build your garden and lawn on the immense acreage. Spending time and money on what beautifies the property is counterintuitive when the focus should be on the actual living space - the shelter.

I have to agree with the comments from denisemahood. Please don't loose sight of the great property and progress you already have by letting the current frustrations get the better of you. You have two very nice, well functioning living spaces. If the permits for your dream home don't come thru, these existing spaces can certainly be combined ( as suggested) to give you a great functioning family home. Of course I've not walked your space & am not aware of what permits would be required but it seems to me that you already have the foundation for a Plan B, if necessary. You have a beautiful piece of property in a peaceful nation with peaceful, kind, warm hearted, people, wonderful helpful neighbors. Please don't give up on all of that because of a disapointment. You both are creative, inovative, smart, & hard working. You can still have a great life there in Portugal, it might just look a little different than what you have been invisioning.

Metaphysically speaking, I have always believed that "setting a clear intention" helps enormously in moving things along in the right direction. Whatever your spiritual preference, setting an intention can aid in getting or keeping things on course. And when times are frustrating (as your's seem to be now), instead of dwelling on the stagnation or obstacles, you can dwell on your simply stated intention with "faith" things will work out. I am setting an intention to see your plans coming to fruition with ease in a timely manner for the benefit of all concerned. Think big, enjoy life, succeed! 🥰🤩🤗

Perhaps there is a lesson here in patience, or maybe an opportunity will come your way that had you already started on the build you would not be able to take up, or perhaps new building methods or materials etc. will become evident. Perhaps the delay is simply so that your bees get settled in first ❤. Who knows? But what will be, will be. Stressing over it will rob you of the joy in your now @thenewbys 😘🙏

When my son is using head as a foot stool in the middle of the night because we are all four of us still sleeping in the same bed it definitely doesn’t feel like luxury. Comparing the developing world’s problems with KZbinrs who want the best for their family is a little unfair. As parents we want the very best we can get for our children, we also want them to have their own bedrooms. We live in a beautiful place that’s true. But we also feel no embarrassment for wanting to create a lovely family home. Great to hear from you, thanks for watching friend.

Hi. I'm Portuguese. D'ont, despair because in Portugal is like that. Permits take too much time, even for us. It's too much burocracy. Keep going. I know is hard 4 people in a tiny house😅, but you'll get there 😊. When my (deceased) husband and i decided to build our house it took almost 3 years (a lote of problems and burocracy in between 🤔🤨😡) to get the final approval and he died on the day we signed the approval. Only 10 years later, when my sons got older we finally started the building. So keep going ❤

You know that your troubles and the emotions they bring forth are valid. What fantastic people you are. Your persistance is inspiring. We bought a a 1937-built stone house next to Serra de Estrela - with bureaucratic systems and approvals awaiting us after a lengthy buying process. We understand your frustration and our prayers are with you throughout this process. Your plans have helped me with pipes before and other tips - you taught me the other day that the slippery character I found between the rocks are a legless lizard and have since taught other South Africans visiting us about it - thanks to Crusoe's bravery in catching them. He is faster than me - they always get away from me. Do pop in for a coffee if you ever come to the Serra. You are fantastic. Brilliant job. Keep fighting. Portugal is richer with you here.

Another channel I follow, Nearby Veggies, they are in central Portugal. It took them a full 2 years to get their permit and they are renovating a tumbledown stone house. They said it took friends that were doing a total new build over 3 years to get theirs. So a renovation permit goes faster than a new build. They have an excellent Portuguese team that have been doing an outstanding job. They also show up every day and don’t take off for weeks at a time to do another job or to go on vacation. They are true artisans and craftsmen with an excellent work ethic. So, don’t be surprised if it takes longer than two years for that permit. It must be so difficult with two small children. Hoping for a miracle.
