Tara, I was so struck by your explanation, "the hearts need to be settled here before the heads watch that one [the old house] disappear". Those words illustrate what seems to be one of yours and John's many fine qualities - emotional intelligence. What a great gift to your children, to each other, and to everyone who know you; from Juo to Mario, from Diego (the beekeeper) to Daniel (the olive tree man), from the real estate guy to your family visitors; from friends to John, Crusoe, and Sawyer. I notice this in all of your interactions, the emotional needs of the humans are never overlooked. It is even extended to your YT family. I always feel that you and John truly engage with your viewers as friends. Being a more "head, get-it-done" type of person myself, I so admire this. We all have our gifts and this is one of yours. I just wanted you to know that.

Tara as a designer who works on interiors for a living, my advice to you guys would be to get neutral curtains in a really good linen / cotton , lined with blackout to ensure a great nights sleep, and then bring in your bright and bold colour in your accessories like paintings , a throw and scatter cushions or even your rug. These things can easily be replaced if you change the colour scheme of the room but your neutral curtains will remain the constant and won’t need to be replaced. It’s a great budget tip.

Hi Tara and John, I am from Australia and just want to let you know how much i have enjoyed your journey over the pass 3 years. Loved all your tips on building growing fresh food and the way you can live off the land. My hat goes off to you both of how your children love being free, and learning so much about life . Where today our kids don't have that, they are so out going love to help and learn . Every time i watch the show and see the boys my face lights up wishing i could have done something like this 50yrs ago. Where we would have had a more healthy life and the kids would have been a lot happier. Iam 75 now lost my hubby 9 yrs ago , and if he was here he would have said the same thing '. He loved been out doors. I'm looking forward to seeing your main house finished. The old sand stone looks so beautiful when finished . Keep up the good work never give up, your doing a fabulous job. Love watching you every week as well. I adore you all, take care and be safe. Sandi

Dark colours can make a small room look even smaller! Because dark colours on walls tend to bring the walls in! Lighter colours push the walls out and the room looks much bigger than it is! One dark wall can be stunning especially if you have a rectangle room and you paint the longest wall darker than the other 3 walls! There are Apps that you can download these days to see what your room's would like in colour before you go out and bye tins of paint to test the colours . The kitchen cupboards would look beautiful in true blue! It would match the tiles! That's just my opinion! I of course don't know what blue the tiles are! But you and hubby will make the right decision! You know what you like. Love and light like always. Enjoy painting it's my favourite pass time hobby!

There are so many directions that you can go with wall color. Knowing that John likes color and taking into consideration that dark colors may make a room seem smaller, opt for doing an accent wall with a bold color with the remaining walls neutral. Tara, you probably already know, but paint a small area and view it in daylight and artificial light at night to get a good feel of the color. The teal color in your blouse would be make a lovely wall color.

Hi Newbies, John you are a carpenter. I don’t want to hear you say, “I’m not a carpenter”. Ok on it. You’re good at it. I subscribed to your channel when you guys were. Vanlifers. You are my favorite channel, and I’m subscribed to 11 channels. Some of themare off grid. The women and men that work together are not carpenters either. On wild wild off grid. Life and contained. I love carpentry, I even have a tablesaw. I make birdcages shelves, a house for my border collie. But he’s not with us anymore. He was the best dog I ever had. So smart! By the way, this is my second time watching this video. I didn’t miss anything. I just enjoy your videos and I enjoy watching your kids run, free exploring and learning. I don’t know if I said, but I’m a nanny, so I love kids, but I was unable to have my own. Which I thought was unfair because there’s so many people there with kids and don’t want them treat them bad put them in dumpsters. Would’ve been a good. My husband and I adopted, when My Son was nine my husband died. Crusoe is an amazing little boy. Sawyer is so cute following around after Crusoe. I’m so glad you let them go off on their land and explore and. It’s amazing. I’ve never seen kids as cute as yours maybe it’s because you’re very pretty and your husband is handsome. That could do it.😂 anyway I’m looking forward to your next video that’s coming out I think tomorrow, but when I start getting withdrawals from not seeing your videos. I just look at your old videos. Have a great week, you too be safe and the boys and of course Oi. ❤

Your whole family brings so much joy to our day and we always come away feeling completely inspired by this incredible journey you have undertaken. So, thank you for that! In today's episode you asked about paint colours and I noticed as you we're standing by the window there was a warm pink glow reflected on the walls which appeared to be similar to the colors in a sunset and I thought how lovely that would be in that room especially on those rainy days in the winter. Just a thought! Can't wait to see what you decide!

I absolutely love how you’re exploring your new selves, settling into the stone house. How about a sort of peachy/red-ish (less warm than like red red…) color for the cabinets to counter the beige/blue tiles? Combined with some soft woods and linen fabrics it could really make the rather dark kitchen feel lighter/warmer and cosy… I’m sure though that whatever you’ll decide on will be beautiful 🫶🏻

The peach colored dahlia by the Tiny Home's entry is gorgeous. I suggest painting a patch of the blue on the wall or on cardboard you can hold close to the blue pattern in the tile because on screen the paint looks as though it has too much green in it for the blue in the tile. I would tend to go a tiny bit lighter in color also as the kitchen space is tiny and dark colors draw it in spatially. Paint, especially just a test pot, is relatively inexpensive but your time is not. Love the idea of drawers rather than shelves under counter. They are so much easier to store, view, and retrieve stuff from than shelves. And a hint from experience, find your drapery fabric that you love and then find a color within that to choose as your paint color. Its much easier to find paint to work with a fabric than fabric to work with a paint color.

Wonderful work and great ideas which you have incorporated into your project. I did hear you talking about having a “rat” or “mice” problem on your farm. Growing up in Zimbabwe on a farm where we did dairy cattle, chickens, and geese we attracted rats, mice and snakes, and the snakes were not keeping the rat population down. We then built our own traps, using 44 gallon drums (200 litre) cut them in half, put quarter full with water. We would construct a st. st. tube plus two bicycle bearings across the middle from one side of the top of the drum to the other side and would smear peanut butter on the tube in the middle. Rats just love it and would attempt to balance themselves crossing on the tube towards the peanut butter, and 9 times out of ten would fall into the water and they could be caught swimming around, trying to get out. Hope this helps

Peppermint oil to deter the mice from coming in, I’ve also used the internet … loud noise with high frequency that basically is a buzz to us… and the mice in the walls left home! I would put my phone near where they could be heard… turned the volume up and started the 10 minute noise…. And left the house. No more mice! A vibrant yellow, in that sunny addition. For the cabinets I’d go a bit lighter but you are definitely on the right track- and if you love that color- then that’s the right one!!!

The dark green is beautiful. However, the space is small and dark colors tend to shrink a space psychologically. My suggestion is light neutral tones on walls and cabinets and bright pops of jewel tone colors in the accessories. For example with the kitchen....colorful pots and pans, the wall cabinets neutral but an island cabinet in a bold color with a contrasting lighter butcher block top. A bright and cheery painting on a focal wall etc. I think you get the idea. Well, we all have opinions and it is obvious you all have good taste. Ultimately, best to do what pleases you who are living there day to day. Great job team Newby.

Perhaps bits of the previous kitchen can go in an outdoor kitchen ?? Also wondering if the wood cuts will be affected by the movement in the bench top when using the bench saw? Thinking it might need to be rigid so the cuts are level. Re wall colour in the extension, the blue of the mountains in the window is lovely! Cld try and bring that in, perhaps on just one wall. Re the kitchen cupboard colour, wondering if you cld match the blue in the tiles? Rather lovely blue there. Good luck with your choices. It’s your space so go with what feels good to you.

Paint a strip of that color right below the tile - or on a scrap board that you can hold next to the tile - to get a better idea. On the screen it looks more blue green than the blue in the tiles...am sure you'll work it out! It is a lovely color, just hard to see how well it works via computer screens! Can;t wait to see the finished project that is bound to be smashing!

Good afternoon Newby family, happy Wednesday to you all, yes, another kitchen for John excellent craftsmanship, been following you all over 3 years, seeing Koti, Safari, the Big House kitchen, no doubt he will surpass himself, for kitchen cabinets a lighter blue that matches the colour of the tiles, and you do not want a darker color since there are no windows. As far the room upstairs lovely views from the windows, love the chrysanthemum if that what's they are along side the stairs, that colour on the walls would be perfect to match the sky, mountains and greenery all around those windows views, challenge try salmon or light peach colour that would match your other accessories. For the windows, verticals would be easy to maintain and some are sold with motives. You can match easily with your surroundings. Would have loved for John to redo my kitchen if you were across the pond, once he was "projectless" but on a farm there is always something new to do. Loved to see past builds, your little boys and Obi playing on the couch while you were preparing some food, having them close by is a plus. Cheers🙏🙏🙏🙏🌺🦋🥰💖👶👱🐶🌄🏡🇵🇹

Your stone house renovation is looking beautiful and that big window in the extension is the spotlight of the house! I love the blue color that you were experimenting with for your kitchen cabinet. It will look beautiful with that bit of blue in the tiles on the walls and the terracotta floors! I am redoing my kitchen cabinets and i had planned to do the same since we pained the front room that color already. You are smart to build new cabinets for your new kitched, since John is so good at woodworking! You can always repurpose the cabinets in the old house for something else entirely if you wanted to. The view of the tiny house through the window is stunning! What I wouldn’t give for a painting of that in my home. I think the blue paint in the kitchen is rich and beautiful, but I agree with Crusoe’s first instinct that no, it doesn’t really work with the tiles. (It may just be my tv settings.) Hi Tara. When you went into the addition I thought you had already painted the walls because on my screen the walls look like a very soft apricot peach sort of colour. I'd go curtains, 100% block out to keep heat out in summer and heat in during winter. Curtains with an apricot tone like huge leaves. I like the idea of blue for the kitchen to match the bespoke Portuguese tiles. I absolutely love your pink dahlias alongside the steps up to the addition. You have made your property a treasure. Great for a young family.

You definitely need 1 or 2 cats. Your mouse problem will disappear. I have just been in Istanbul where cats are everywhere in the city and really treasured by the people to the extent that they feed and water them, put little cat houses out for them and ensure they have free range. Consequently no mouse or rat problem and a number of friendly, clean well loved cats. Definitely the boys will love having a cat each. Just like Obie is such a wonderful addition to your family so will cats.

My husband has also Allergie to cats. But there are allergy friendly breeds. We have Turkish Van's and my husband has no problem with them. And he has not a problem with every cat. Some are just fine, some others are terrible for his allergies. Try and sniff some cats. And you can make them just outdoor cats. And side note. The living traps are just good for the mouse, if the mouse is able to come back to it's group and nest. Ergo your house. Otherwise it will die in nature, without it's support and shelter very quickly. There is no humane way to get rid of mice.

It will be a beautiful kitchen! I remember Crusoe's face when the derelict house went down so I think to take it slow (or maybe make the house you live in a part of the new build?) is a very good idea. About color; if you'd take the rug you have there (a kelim?) and take those colors for the windows, it will be beautiful. Nice warm happy colors. I find grey not so nice, and if they call it elephants breath, it is even more narly, I agree.

An idea for your kitchen: I love having high cabinets, out of my reach, to store things that I only use a few times a year, such as that large crock pot for family gatherings, Large Platters for Holidays, or preserving supplies I use only in the summer. I don't mind having to get a ladder, for the convenience of having them stored away out of sight to prevent clutter. You could probably even create cabinets that you can draw down to your height, with a heavy downward mechanism. Shelves above staircases are perfect to store luggage or off season clothes. I also love a cabinet on wheels with a butcher block counter, that I can pull near the stove for extra counter space, and chopping vegetables. When I am finished with it, I can hide it in a corner, so the family can have more freedom to move around. Tables that fold down from the wall, or pull out under the counter, are perfect when you have limited space. Look in every nook and cranny of the house, and see where you can place a high cabinet or shelf in a corner, in every room and hallway. You don't have to store bedroom items in the bedroom, nor kitchen items in the kitchen, if you use these items seasonally. Never forget underbed storage. Build your bed to a higher height to allow for storage. Or build trundle beds, to pull out from under your bed, so your children have their own beds. Set them up in a way where Mom and Dad can still move around the bed. If you haven't already, placed a rollaway bed-couch in the new add on room, and maybe add a nice wardrobe for storage. You might end up using it to store children's toys, and sweaters and coats and boots!! But it will keep that room looking appealing and organized. But I think your plan to build an outdoor dining space will help so much during the Spring and summer seasons!!!

I really love autumnal oranges. They are are still quite earthy but add a warmness to a lamped room yet a vibrancy on a dark day. I love that duality in the colour tones. Whatever you pick will be great as long as you all love it, it’s what matters. I keep imagining a kind of Asian inspired batik in the soft furnishing of your extension. Anyway those are my thoughts to share. Have fun!!!!

One word: WARM! Go for a warm colour guys, like a light burnt orange or slightly peachy sand colour for the living space. It will bring out the natural warmth of the light and the timbre finishes (if you have them) not too much grey and green guys, it makes a place look dead and dull. No heavy dark or too strong colours either or you will shrink the spaces. The blue looks good in the kitchen, I would go cool in there, blue, white and maybe a bit of duck egg grey. Warm, light color in the hall too. Bring out the colours of the bookcase. I wish I could be there to do it for you! :) Oh and I think floaty linen curtains, or those bamboo paper blind would be lovely too. (Ok, that was far more then one word) Xx

Love that blue in kitchen! But I'm wondering if it would be too much for all the cabinets in a small kitchen. Might make it look smaller. I think I'd consider using it for maybe a small island or maybe just the lower kitchen cabinets. Or just shelving. I think a light grey- a grey with blue tones/ not red or yellow tones would look good for cabinets. Accessories in kitchen could be yellow and/ or red to bring in more color!

Watching you paint the window frames Tara, I noticed the view out the window and thought if I was sitting on a couch, how it would be nice for inside to be part of outside so what about a pale blue, green or yellow to match the colours outside? Or if you want to keep an earthier tone to it, a paler shade of aubergine incorporates a little browny purple into it which also goes well with outside summer colours but would feel warm in winter when it’s cold and wet outside. And I reckon that blue in the kitchen is excellent, I love it.

For the kitchen color, use the back splash tiles as inspiration! Use the same color as them as play around with the shading. However it is a small space, so keep the bulk of it lighter so you dont make the atmosphere smaller. As for the curtain situation, try using decorative scarves as the curtains! I did that in my living room and it is pleasantly bohemian!
