Re-watched a portion of your video. First, you are correct about the PCM part numbers being different between the manual and automatic. The first part is for the model and year and the last two letters are for manual vs automatic (plus version letter). Do you have your reverse lights working? I have a way to do that but I'm not at that step yet. My manual tranny and shifter is in and I'm putting the drivetrain back together. About 4hrs labor left to be ready to drive with the auto PCM. I have a manual PCM on order from eBay as well as a programmer.

Alright so I followed the video and did everything correctly for programming a used manual ecu. After I wasn't able to start it anymore but my keys would work when pressing the unlock buttons on them. After a lot of troubleshooting I found that I needed to release the e brake or press the brake pedal to be able to start it. Seems like with new ecu brake pedal has to be pushed down to start it now like its the clutch sensor. Just leaving this info if others have issues.
@PS_on_youtube

You are correct, you have to push the brake & clutch pedal at the same time. Definitely a weird thing in my opinion... Every manual car I've had (except my Focus) you could just push in the clutch (no brake pedal) and the car would start, but the Focus has to be different... Is what is is...

Ford dealer could have programmed existing PATS keys to manual PCM for less than $150, Forscan free software has a feature that reprograms VIN number from BCM to PCM and other modules. Good to know Ford IDS can be paid for daily subscription. I know because I just did an ecobost ST engine and 6MT swap to a 2014 Focus SE hatchback.

I haven't seen a way for you to do VIN programming in Forscan. I also asked for a quote from my dealer to do this and they wouldn't give me one. Other videos on this say the dealer's position is that they can't reprogram a VIN into a used PCM. They'd rather have you buy a $600 part and then charge you to install and program it. For comparison, I found a used manual PCM for my Focus for $44, shipped.

Okay got past previous obstacle and went to reprogram pcm and it says it’s for a c max (was told it was a 2015 focus by eBay dealer...same p/n) 😅 I went through the reprogramming process with the cmax ecu and everything went through. Not everything was exactly the same as yours but at the end it stated “complete”. Went through pats programming with the original key and it failed to gain access. Any idea why?
@PS_on_youtube
@PS_on_youtube 3 жыл бұрын
I know with the Focus & Fiesta the car can only be programmed with 3 keys maximum. Every time a key is programmed it creates a key profile. You’ll have to probably delete all of the key profiles except 1. On the Focus I can see the key profiles in the center screen in between the gauges, I think IDS can modify/delete them. I only had 1 key when I started my project, bought a generic key off Amazon, and had a local locksmith cut the key and program it to the car. During that process the locksmith deleted all of the key profiles and created 2 new ones. You need 2 keys for doing PATS. I had the 2 keys programmed with the automatic PCM installed, then swapped it for the manual PCM. When doing PATS your also programming the BCM (and PCM). So... my guess is it’s a key profile problem.

@@PS_on_youtube thanks for getting back! I have a friend who is a lead technician for Ford and I told him my dilemma. One key I have is original and will lock and unlock the car. The second key was bought on Amazon (8bit) and cut by a smith. The Ford technician is under the belief that if I reprogram the new PCM and it’s not labeled as Ford Focus (mine would only program as C-Max under all other) than the reason pats wasn’t gaining access was due to IDS looking for the C-Max body control modules. I am gonna try to get a PCM from the same year and pull it from a focus myself if possible and see what happens. I paid $26 for this one...get what you pay for. I will have to see if there is a way for me to look through the keys assigned to the car to make sure there aren’t more than 3. I’m assuming this can be done with IDS outside of the PATS reprogramming process.

First, you MUST find a version of IDS that will work with your VCM2. My J2354 device was very picky and barely wanted to cooperate with IDS V112, every other version I tried gave me troubles. MotorCraft has a lot of different versions that you can download for free (if MotorCraft doesn't have a old enough version, them search Google). My suggestion is to try downloading the IDS software first, then connect you VCM2, then you should be able to see if the VCM2 will communicate with the IDS software. All of that should be possible without a license. However to go any further than that, such as actually communicate with the vehicle... Probably not... I don't think IDS allows that without a license.

You can use the auto wiring harness and repin the PCM connector for a couple wires unique to the manual version. The plug and most of the terminals are common to both but there are a couple of unused pins on the auto PCM plug. To do this, I robbed a couple of terminal ends with about 3 inches of wire from the now unused TCM connector. You have to look for a video on repinning these connections to find out how to unlock the pins.

Question. Do you have a video on wiring the reverse light switch ?
@PS_on_youtube
@PS_on_youtube 2 жыл бұрын
I do not, but it's pretty easy. There is a sensor on top of the manual transmission, when you put the car in reverse the sensor (technically a switch) closes and completes a circuit. If you wire this into the battery and the reverse lights, then everytime you shift into reverse your reverse lights will go on. Alternatively, in the engine compartment there is a fuse box. One of those fuses is for the reverse lights. If you connect the sensor that is on top of the transmission to these wires you'll have working reverse lights.

I agree. there are legit was and ill-legit ways to use Ford IDS. As far as I know Ford IDS software is free, what your paying for (or what Ford is charging for) is the access to use the software (ie. the license). The legit way is to pay for a license, and yes I agree they are pricy. The other way is to search Google for slightly older versions of IDS (i used Version 112), as long as the version supports your car your good. Many of the older versions online will have a 'crack'. I'm not going to go into detail about that process because it is kind of lengthy and requires a fair bit of computer confidence to config and change settings.

@@PS_on_youtube Appreciate the reply. I picked up this 2014 Ford Focus SE in used but nearly new condition outside a freshly replaced transmission and then found out about the recall issues. This car gets wet, stutters and eventually goes off. The mechanic (Not a Ford mechanic) blamed the PCM, but as far as I can tell the PCM itself is fine and it's just the housing that needs to be fixed (I mean... I'm amazed the PCM isn't fried because water was getting up in there - the cracked front panel is obviously not protecting the PCM from moisture - I just ordered a replacement) What bothers me is I believe I can do just about anything correctly with the PCM whether I have to completely replace it and reprogram it and then it could turn around and turn out to be the recall issue. Despite being in the recall years and model, the VIN is not part of the recall. My luck. Local Ford mechanics will likely mess it up and send me a huge bill for diagnostics and checkups lol. To my understanding, even if it's the recall problem, this car was not driven after the issue began and if caught early not a lot would need to be replaced. Trying to get this thing on the road! Wouldn’t it be better with a 6speed trans from a focus ST? 🤔 that’s what I am thinking about doing your thoughts ?
@PS_on_youtube
@PS_on_youtube 3 жыл бұрын
sure, you could do that... The ST 6 speed has a 'shorter' 6th gear ratio than the 5 speed, this means your engine will rev slightly higher (200-300rpm's higher) while driving on the highway. if your interested in gas mileage... higher rpm's = lower MPG's (even a slight difference of 200-300 rpm's could be 1-2 mpg less on the highway). The reason the 6 speed has a 'shorter' 6th gear ratio than the SE is to help keep the turbo (on the ST) spooled up. You actually might notice a performance loss with a 6 speed on a SE, VS the stock 5 speed. At least in the higher RPM range. One BIG reason I didn't go with the 6 speed transmission is because it would have cost me $800-$1000 to buy a 6 speed trans. I bought my 5 speed transmission for $350~ and only 14k miles on it.
@watermalanblew

Still though having that extra gear just seems more better to me haha. I just bought my 14 focus with 76k on it haven’t had any transmission issues. But in the event that I do. Thinking about doing this t my 2012 SEL hatchback. My car has remote start from the factory. Do you know if I will still be able to use this function after doing the swap and reprogramming everything or if I will loose that? Also do you have a part number for the manual transmission trans axle mount that you needed since the automatic and manual one are different? So happy I found you and have seen how easy this swap will be and won't have to pay a company over $2k to do the swap for me. Keep up the good work I will definitely be following this.

What does the gray market mean? And let me see if i got you right on what you did with your PCM. You took a manual transmission PCM and installed your vin number in it. Now being that you used your Vin number wouldn't the software install the programming back on it from your automatic Vin number? Because if you put your Vin number in IDS then it would pull the programming info off the Ford site for your Vin and install the automatic programming. No?

Excellent questions. 1st, the 'grey market' device I refer to is VXDiag. If I understand correctly Ford has a monopoly over who can and can't make OBD2 devices for their vehicles (specifically Dealer level access tools), this grey market tool will give you Dealer level access at a very small fraction of the cost (about $100 vs $4k+). 2nd, I thought about this one myself, but after further research I came across this: www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.fleet.ford.com/content/dam/aem_fleet/en_us/fleet/vin-guides/VIN2014.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwiTkN2RxJvuAhUDxVkKHYA3DBMQFjAAegQIBBAC&usg=AOvVaw2btz4jXDKlAsC3d_5aTOvv Ford VIN numbers do not contain information about a car's transmission.

@PS_on_youtube

@@jimromada4949 another good question. My guess is because the part numbers for the Auto and Manual are different, maybe the Hardware is different as well (ie. different circuitry, etc...) I remember when I still had the Auto trans PCM in the car I tried to program it with Manual trans As-Built data and it kept giving me error messages, i didn't get those error messages with the manual trans PCM when programming it... As i show in the video, you need the numbers from the 'tear tag' on the PCM when programming it in the IDS software, I can only guess that those numbers (which I got from the manual PCM) probably correspond to manual transmission data.

I used 'Ford IDS' software. It depends on which version of the software you want/need, but the latest versions can be downloaded from: www.fordtechservice.dealerconnection.com/vdirs/wds/diagnosticsites/vcmdvd/mcs/idssoftware.asp Before the software can be used a license is required. (Short term licenses aren't too expensive) www.fordtechservice.dealerconnection.com/VDIRS/wds/vcm_retail_renewal_Latest.asp Lastly, you'll need a 'J2534' device that will allow you to connect the computer to the car. I'm assuming you mean a 'clutch upgrade' for the manual transmission? If so, the stock Manual Transmission Ford Focus MK3 came from the factory with a Dual Mass Flywheel, there are a few companies that sell Single Mass Flywheels (that would be a considerable upgrade over the stock Flywheel). As far as the clutch for a Manual Transmission, just about any off the shelf 'clutch kit' should work fine. @@jeffreydesormeaux3539 I just went with the LUK clutch kit from RockAuto. It comes with a new pressure plate, clutch disc, hydraulic throwout bearing and an alignment tool (that needs a bit of modification to work - wrap the end of it with electrical tape until it is a nice tight fit). I used the dual mass flywheel that came from the doner car as it seemed to be in great shape. with normal use, I expect to get another 150K miles (at least) out of this transmission. Even with an upgrade, I don't know if that guarantees it will last longer. It would be able to handle more torque but that does not necessarily mean that the wear items will have more longevity when used in conjunction with a stock 5-speed. Furthermore, if you tackle this job, you will be well versed in what it takes to swap out a clutch if the need for an upgrade arises. Also, as far as the lightweight flywheel goes, I didn't really consider going that route because there are already a lot of other parts I am changing out so if something doesn't go right, I don't need any other variables to have to consider. Plus, when I got all the doner parts with my tranny, it was another $200 for everything on top of the $150 I paid for the transmission so I had 95% of what I needed including the correct flywheel which is a very expensive part when purchased new.

I think, more so when it's not as much as my daily driver but I don't know. I'm going to just use the stock mass fly wheel because it can help for a smoother ride when driving along in traffic. That's what I found on that. I assume that all the parts that these cars can take doesn't matter when it comes to trim. I too intend to do an ST (or RS) swap in the near(ish) future. I will be buying the WHOLE car to do the swap. I’d highly suggest buying a wrecked beyond repair Focus ST (preferably a wrecked car that was hit on the side or rear), NON-Repairable is the KEY, if the car is even remotely repairable it will sell at auction for quite a bit more than a non-repairable car. You should be able to buy a wrecked 2012-2014 Focus ST at Copart auto auctions for $3k-$4k all day long. By buying the whole car you get EVERYTHING, then you just have to swap the ST parts into your car.

@@PS_on_youtube after copart fees a wrecked st goes for yeah 3 or 4k... i leaning towards the rs swap though! im taking a closer look at the body and tunnel in the next couple of days. im fairly sure the whole rear subframe bolts right up, there are extra support members that bolt to the unibody that might require some new bolt holes. fingers crossed, i just hope the unibody is mostly the same. the area in front of the fuel tank where the se/st front resonator sits hopefully is tall enough for the rs prop shaft. idk though! anyway re: the st parts... get an engine with turbo out of an mkz, escape, fusion, or any other of the other cars that use the exact same engine. the st community hasn't realized that the engine is widely available for $500 on car-part.com... the 6 speed transmission is still on the expensive side but... (im also pretty curious how the se 5 sp would cope with the st engine, and might try this at some point) the parts list for an st swap i believe is engine, trans, clutch, clutch hydraulics, axles, exhaust, pcm, intercooler, and then just little stuff. i am fairly sure it can be done for under 2k if the pcm can be reprogrammed RS swap is another story. people use st 2.0 blocks with 2.3 internals. the 2.3 crank is available from a multitude of vehicles, mustang, etc. a stroked (to 2.3) st engine is preferable to the o.e. rs engine according to some people (closed vs open deck) and presumably an rs ecu will run a stroked st motor normally. the transmission and transfer case are expensive, ecu will be expensive. so idk im seriously considering starting the rs swap. parts list is complete rear end, prop shaft, fuel tank, transfer case, transmission, stroked st engine, rs pcm, and small stuff... big remaining questions are whether the body is, in fact, basically the same and whether the pcm can be programmed relatively easily using IDS, idk if the bcm is the same, dunno about body harness, dunno if imma waste a few thousand dollars on a pile of parts to just sit in the garage for years

@@maxwright4387 I’ve been watching RS’s sell at Copart auctions this past week. 2 sold. One of them was repairable and sold for $12,700 (plus fees could easily bring that to $15,000~). The other RS was not repairable and sold for $10,600 (plus fees could bring that to $12,500~). I’d really like to do an RS swap, but ONLY if I can buy the whole car for $7k~ with fees (which will probably not happen any time soon). The RS rear sub frame will directly bolt into an SE or ST, however the spare tire part of the frame will need to be slightly modified. The RS gas tank is mounted a little different the the SE and ST. The ‘tunnel’ will have to be cut out of the RS and welded into the SE / ST. The RS does not have a traditional rear differential, it has this clutch thing and it’s controlled by a computer... I’m sure I’m missing a lot of things that differentiate the RS from other Focuses, but that’s just a few...

Great question. 1. The seller (maybe eBay) will say what car it came from. 2. It’s possible to use the model number on the PCM and cross reference that number with Ford. I bought my PCM on eBay, the seller said it was from a manual transmission Focus. Prior to buying my PCM online, I hd also done research online that said it may be possible to get a list of manual transmission PCM’s from a local Ford dealer (parts department). Or, if you find a PCM for sale online, note the numbers on the PCM and take those numbers to the Ford dealer (parts department again) and ask them to cross reference in their system to see what car it came out of.

@@PS_on_youtube Thanks. I'm in the middle of the swap now. Just about ready to drop the auto tranny. Like you, I'm using the auto PCM and harness initially as I don't have the manual ones yet. One question, do you think it's important to totally disconnect the exhaust at the flex pipe? I removed the hanger bracket bolts but the exhaust flange nuts were totally rusted out and I'm going to have to cut them to remove. It seems like there will still be enough flexibility in the exhaust to lower the engine a bit to remove and install the tranny. At any rate, I'll see how this goes and decide whether it is worth it to swap to the manual PCM. I already have a SCT tuner so that's my way around the 3500rpm limit. Also, I'm installing the clutch starter safety switch and I saw from your other video how that's pretty important.

I didn't have to do anything with the exhaust. At most I only raised or lowered the engine about 1 inch when removing the Automatic Transmission. Also, as of right now, I still have the Automatic wire harness on the car. At some point I will replace it with the manual engine harness just to see if there is any difference (video to come on that). Also, the reason I bought the manual PCM and reprogrammed it was because I needed to turn off the check engine light. Most States require emissions testing annually, and one of the tests they do is connecting to the OBD2 port, and my car won't pass if the check engine light is ON. Also about the cruise control... I'm almost positive that one of cables that ran to the TCM (Transmission Control Module) needs to be grounded or connected to something in the engine to get the cruise control working, still a work in progress.

The MK3 Focus appears to be a European styled car, and that's AWESOME! Especially since we (here in the US) normally don't get Ford's European styled vehicles (which in my opinion look WAY better). Ok... The idea behind the 'universal' platform for the Focus is for reduced production cost. It would seem to me that having 1 interior wire harness for both the Automatic and Manual would be cheaper than two (or three, or four), but Ford being Ford (more specifically because for whatever reason things 'have to' be complicated) there is a REALLY good chance that there are many different interior wiring harnesses, and the difference between one harness and another (ie, automatic vs manual) could the addition/removal of 1-2 wires that they create a whole separate harness...

The thing is that it looks like it is just another grounding switch like the brake so with it unhooked, the cruise should still work but doesn't cancel when the clutch is depressed because it is a normally open switch. I put the diagrams on my google drive here (See one titled CruiseControl3.pdf). drive.google.com/open?id=1AM5pDpPoNZ6rba_5-t8ZIA_1j8lGIX_m So, it could be that you need to go into the vehicle parameters in Forscan and make sure the transmission type is set to manual and that the parameter for "with cruise control" is set.

@@PS_on_youtube I'm working through this now. There are a couple pins that the manual PCM uses that are not used on the auto PCM. Unfortunately, that means the wiring harness from the auto does not have any wires at these pins on the PCM connector. However, you can rob a couple of the terminals from the now unused TCM connector. In doing so, I retained about 3 inches of wire to splice my own wire to. In doing this, you can get your reverse lamps and cruise control cancel switch wires hooked up. One note, to remove the terminal ends from the TCM connector, first remove the back of the TCM plug (the cover containing the lever). Then you need a very small flat head jeweler's screwdriver to place in the hole adjacent to the terminal being removed, going from the face side. You are trying to depress the lock tab on the terminal end to get it to release. Once you get it out, before inserting it into the PCM connector, you need to punch out the plastic plugs on the unused locations where you are inserting the salvaged terminal. Then push the new terminal in from the back until it locks into place.

To get it to work, wire the upper clutch pedal switch to pin 43 on the manual PCM and while you're doing that, run a wire to pin 42 for the reverse switch on the tranny to get reverse lamps working. To do this, you need to rob some terminal ends from the TCM connector that is no longer in use.
