yeah, me too. Really is like that. I havent lived there for twenty years now and whenever I hear the hometown accent I am struck by how deadpan and ironic it sounds. Always sounds like Mancs are looking down on everyone else. Always that slightly snarky tone. I tell you, the Manny sense of humour doesnt travel either. Non-Mancs just dont get it, they think you're serious. Except Scousers, they get it. Outside of England, Mancs and Scousers get on just fine.
@fionabeswick71559 жыл бұрын
***** I am from Gatley, just next door to wythenshawe..my gran was from there. My mum was very keen I would not grow up to talk like them, but to have a 'nice'voice
@fionabeswick71559 жыл бұрын
***** Last time I tried this comment I got a lot of abuse. Its my view that England is very snobby. And accent matters. Its no use to deny this: it does. You may have people with regional accents on TV now but if you want to get on, you have to learn to do a 'nice voice'. Now I stress, I am not the following, these are some things I got called "stuck-up; stuck-up fool; trying to be the artbiter of public taste; irrelevant and refusing to grow old gracefully; snob having tea with the queen"..it went on and on. Not one of the abusers engaged me in the debate. They just handed out these nasty insults. But I realised: they thought I myself speak RP, speak 'proper' and was looking down on THEM! Well, I dont. I have a regional accent myself. But I do know how to do a 'nice voice' when I need to.
@fionabeswick71559 жыл бұрын
***** I am sure you know what I mean. In the corridors of power, where real power resides, its still about accent. Look at all those media people who call working class people, people who have seen the factories that used to sustain their communities destroyed, they get called 'chavs' and 'lazy' and 'scroungers'..this while the middle class send their kids to private school, have private health and every opportunity.. I am old enough to remember when working people mattered and when everyone shared. Wealthy people used to live on council estates, did you know that? It was truly diverse. Right-to-buy ended that! so under Thatcher, all of a sudden, 4 million unemployed, crime rates skyrocket, homeless all over..and yet, what do you know? Its all their own fault! Mrs Thatcher said so. Suddenly, hard-working ppl had become lazy and feckless. Nothing to do with the ruin of their communities and the promotion of dog-eat-dog capitalism. It was all their own fault. And now, the middle-class own the media and government. You get nobody from the workers there anymore. Impossible. You need connections and you need money to make it. All these snobby journalists..when a few kids riot, to make themselves heard..they are calling for them to be jailed..while bankers go scot-free...will anyone from HSBC be charged for hiding tax money? You need a 'good accent'. Got to have it. speak like a chav and you are doomed to a decaying estate. Well, maybe not, but you will never get on.
@fionabeswick71559 жыл бұрын
***** hmm...I dont know. Maybe things have changed. But I am just reading a book called Chavs, about how the working class has been demonized in the UK and accent is a big part of this. A Manchester twang is one thing, a regional accent can be called charming, but it still is not the same as a middle-class accent. If you were in very serious trouble and went to a lawyer, would you pick the one who spoke with a scouse..no, wait...Geordie accent.. or one who had a really posh Eton-and-Harrow..I hate to say it..but all other things being equal (cases won, reputation, etc) I'd go for the toff. How about you? Really, honestly?

Shaun Maguire I know that, Jesus! I remember it very well. The town was full of Southerners trying to be Mancs. John Peel even mentioned it on his show: every caller was trying to say they were Mancs. But what is so funny about this, is how Kevin gets it wrong. It's like in another sketch where Kevin's mum says to him " Why can't you be a nice polite boy like Perry? " the phone rings & its Perry's Mum & he's like " Yeah what? Naw I don't want to that's so unfair " then speaks to Mrs Paterson in that mild mannered polite way 😂

she's a star and well deserved, a brilliant artist born to have all the plaudits what's bestowed on her, you must agree you cant manufacture talent or star quality you are either born with it or not and she and all our pure comedy makers harry Enfield,Paul whitehouse,Paul Merton etc etc have got it just like our old traditional artists

Huge fan of the character as my kid brother was exactly like him. This is the best Kevin sketch. Gets me every time.
