This video shows unique combination of Aurora Borealis and Perseids meteor shower. It was taken on the nights of 10th and 11th of August 2024 from Catskills, near Livingston Manor, NY.
I traveled to Star Haven (Rockland Astronomy Club's dark site in the Catskills) last weekend with a couple of astro friends (Adam and Ken) and we were lucky to observe Perseids and Aurora while staying there.
The first night on Saturday, 10th, was cloudy in the beginning but it cleared at around 10PM and we saw a few great Perseids. The 1st segment was taken on the 10th and you can see some hints of Aurora at the end of the timelapse.
On the second night, on 11th, we noticed some strange glow in the north and thought that it was light pollution, but when we took few second exposures, we could see that it was Aurora.
It was an unusual Aurora because the glow lasted for almost the entire night. At some point, around midnight, we noticed fairly bright beams coming out from the North West and we were able to capture some wonderful images.
At around 2AM, I went to sleep, but left my camera shooting a timelapse. When I woke up the next morning, Ken told us that there was a very bright Aurora at 3AM. I was lucky that my camera captured it and I was able to make a nice timelapse.
The footage was taken using Canon 6D (astromodified) and Canon RP cameras, lens was Irix 15.
