We started that cruise in the med and stopped in Naples, Italy. We were not off the ship a few hours and they called us all back and sent the ship to the Persian gulf. What a day that was.

The glory days of the mighty f-14. Even f-15 pilots (and the rest of jet fighter pilots around the world) envied those who flew the Tomcat. No other fighter is as beautiful as it was.

Or more difficult to maintain - ashore or at sea! Thank you AIMD!

Never heard of F-15 drivers envying the Tomcat. Everything was better on F-15, especially the Radar and pilot interface, not needing a RIO, maintenance, thrust-to-weight ratio, climb rate, etc.
@THE-BUNKEN-DRUM Жыл бұрын
Don't get me wrong, I love the Tomcat as much as the next person, but the amount of "fanboyism" over it, is starting to get a bit silly. Like people are starting to treat it, as if it was some kind of "UFO"

I watched this video mainly to see the F-14's, I assume the F4's were retired by then, as those were also one of my all time favorites (the Phantoms), loved how those F4 engines would go to full thrust just before launch from the deck (as with the Tomcats)!
@get2dachoppa249 Жыл бұрын
If this vid is from early to mid 1992, then it’s possible VMFA-112 was still flying the F-4S. They transitioned to the hornet in October of that year. There would still be a handful of F-4s in the test & evaluation squadron for another 10 years.

@TheUsmc08023 жыл бұрын
And the Navy was better for it. Each different aircraft was the best at the role it was designed. The F18 Super Hornet is ok at everything but not better than ANY of the aircraft it replaced. The F14 has more range, speed, and it's radar sees further. The A6 Intruder is a better strike platform, the Prowler has better communication and anti communication equipment....etc etc .
@elitewarrior00763 жыл бұрын
@@TheUsmc0802 yeah but it's far better for costs to have a multirole platform like the F-18, which can be used as a fighter, bomber, and electronic attack (Growler). Think about it, you had to have parts for so many different platforms, F-18, A-6, F-14, S-3, it just goes on and on, that's extremely wasteful and inefficient. plus you have to train pilots to fly completely different platforms. And there hasn't been a need for a true air superiority fighter in like 30 years, the F-18 is more than adequate as a multirole fighter bomber. the F-14 crashed a lot and was expensive to maintain. again, not really necessary anymore
@mattfgln3 жыл бұрын
Elite Warrior007 aeronaval supremacy has a cost that must be (and was, back then) accepted. Spending less because of extreme interoperability of a single platform means you agree on a set back on performances. Using hornets as tanker is a waste of money. iirc no asw platforms are now aboard carriers (sh-60 are limited in range and electronics in comparison to an S-3)
@koc9882 жыл бұрын
@@mattfgln The only argument you have is ASW aircraft and that's about it. For other aircraft it was simply a product of what type of jobs the navy could do. The A-6 can't do self defense on strike missions. The F-14 was such a hangar queen it couldn't get up in the air and when it did it's ham strung bombing system wasn't even close to accurate enough. In fact it didn't bomb more than once in Kosovo because of it. Shear payload means very little when laser guided weapons are a possibility. You now need two guided bombs instead of 10 or 12 dumb ones. Force multipliers have changed combat for the better I believe. We will continue to find better force multipliers.

Why does the F/A-18 say VFA-105?
@ILSRWY49 ай бұрын
V stands for "Fixed-wing navy" the F stands for "Fighter" and the A stands for "Attack." so VFA or Fixed-wing Navy Fighter Attack squadron. Since the F-18 is billed as both Fighter and Attack (F/A-18) the squadron reflects that mission. VFA. And `105" is just the i.d. number of that particular VFA squadron.
