@@hedgehog_d_sonic1643 I was, but I may not have been the translator for the ones Yandere saw. (Pretty sure I translated it as St. Hamelin, like the Pied Piper). I think I've seen 2-3 groups trying to tackle Persona over the years, including some gnarly MTL. My group was Behind the Mask, and we pretty much fizzled out after volume 1. The editor wanted me to localize it more to make it sound more natural to English speakers, and I didn't have the artistry for that so I stuck to a strictly accurate translation.

My favorite scene is the revelation that "Kazuya" is actually just Naoya's own shadow, born of his own survivor's guilt. The fact that he kept calling it "Kazuya" was just repeatedly proving its own existence. And when Naoya finally realizes, and says "you were never Kazuya, were you?" and his shadow replies by stabbing him in the same breath as replying "I AM YOU"...proving this was never the "evil twin" trope, it's Naoya subconsciously wishing himself dead...It's peak cinema honestly

Oh man, Naoya was just normal dude with tragic backstory with his twin brother dying. That lead him to question everything around including his identity. While persona protagonist were rebellious, depressed, happy go lucky, or stoic, that guy was interesting for me because he was still mystery to me, nobody actually understood where or what he was thinking about? I always wanted to know what happen to him after the game ended.

I wish they made a physical release of the manga. Naoya is probably one of if not the best protagonist in persona. I’m hoping they make an official English translation/ re-release for the 30th anniversary.

The only downside about this manga is the Snow Queen part of the story. Really hope if Atlus remake this, they choose Yukino Mayuzumi as the leader character for the Snow Queen Route while Naoya as leader for Sebec Route

Wow the story make3s so much more sense and has a bigger impact from the Manga's perspective. Thanks for sharing it. Hoping Atlus remakes Persona 1 some day and takes notes from the manga. Also Nanjo continues to be my favourite Persona character.

the manga does have some flaws, like ayase and yukino don't get given much with a rather awkward implementation of the SQQ where it's just thrown in midway through and some of it was glazed over. Naoya's brother was a cool inclusion and having brown, elly and reiji all with the group is a nice add-on and what's funny is p2 acts as though everyone played a role in p1 but yet in the game that's impossible

@ Yeah for sure, but is pros definitely outweigh its flaws it really is essentially a director’s cut of the game. Granted Seebec is what many consider the “main” route and it already has so many dungeons it makes sense it was given priority, SQQ however is just as good so if they were doing a hypothetical remake I would argue the paths should be merged so you do one and then the other somehow.

I remembered hearing about it thanks to a Reddit comment. Then one day I was bored at the beach ans decided to read it, and I ended reading the whole things because of how hooked I was lmao. It's genuinly one of my favorite pieces of persona content out there

Love your video on Persona 1 Manga adaption . It is genuinely so peak and made me love and appreciate all the character especially Naoya and Maki so much more than the game itself. I was so heartbroken and saddened by Ideal Maki's fate. PS : YandereGogeta I would recommend listening to the Persona 1 drama cd which is available right here in KZbin .It is very interesting and intriguing in its own right. It is very fun hear all the Persona 1 characters and their interactions. It adapts both the Sebec and Snow queen routes. Also by the way the Persona 1 Mc i.e Naoya has a different name altogether and is voiced by Akira Ishida who also voices Makoto Yuki.

Haven’t watched this yet, saving it for later, but I did finish the manga yesterday and then video comes out, must be the collective unconscious at work So I’ll share my thoughts on it Gotta say its one of the more interesting game adaptations ive read in the game Naoya is kind of like a blank slate it never feels like any of the choices you make show any visible differences in the manga Naoya is a fully fleshed out character, and you can tell which moments the Persona starts taking a strain on his mental health and losing control a little, with his eye colors and face changing like in the PS1 cover art its actually pretty funny how hard they went on this cover art, and then you find out how little the guy in the art actually does in the game's story since Maki is pretty much the real main lead of that Naoya went from one of the most boring silent mcs to one of the coolest characters of the series this cover art makes so much sense now that they added that new plotline about the "second" Naoya, its brilliant I also really liked how expanded on the game's themes and characters, Maki in particular is super likable in the manga The iconic moments were translated and recreated so well, but I liked that it felt more like an introspective supernatural series with the occasional fight scene The action is very sporadic and it really fits to the themes the story was going for. It’s very fitting for the first Persona story to be about people’s personas in the literal sense of the word, it made for an interesting psychological side to this adaptation.

Boy, I would say some of the moments are absolute cinema if it have a anime adaptation. Now I'm struggling to confirm whether Naoya or Tatsuya won the best Persona protagonist in Persona franchise; furthermore, same to be said to Maki or Maya earned to be the best female protagonist.

This manga was my first introduction to the persona and smt franchise, and i didn't understand nothing when i first read it because i was missing context, but after playing P1 (ps1 AND psp version) i re-read it and i understood what true peak was

Such a good video, watch it in one seating, and yeah sounds like a good retelling of the base game, even though when gaves get adapted they fail because of lack of opinions or control you have since you're not in control of the story like you was in the game, but I think it was able to work with persona one is because base off of videos i seen about persona 1-2 are the most symbolic of the themes of your true self psychology, it was all about the mask the characters wore and not being their true self or refused to tell the truth about being jealous of their friends or hating themselves. Which is why it work with this manga, i dont think it could be done with persona 3-5 because lets be honest those games are known for the freedom of choices and being free on how to spend your time and days, but im glad you gain a even better appreciation of shin megami tensei persona, oh and i know how it feels to just bust into tears reading a manga, happen to me when i read assassination classroom final chapter during the final roll call, it hit so hard and I was just heartbroken, but that speaks volume of the author that made you feel for a fictional characters and story.

Really glad you covered this, never really paid attention to it besides seeing it once when I was getting back into Persona, and now I'm curious how things could have been done with the rest of the series in this vain or how more of this story could have been put back into the games as well. Alongside just appreciating it as is. Going to be giving this a proper read through myself too.
