Past their introductions, the characters in P5 don't get much development outside of social links, which, from a narrative standpoint, makes no sense, since it implies they need to rely solely on Joker to learn and grow. In P3, they reach their resolutions by themselves and don't need the protagonist to help them develop.

The VA in Reload did an excellent job, but honestly, it was the least of Reload's problems. The direction and cinematography is just... better in this old ass 2007 PS2 game than the 2024 HD Remake. And to be clear, I'm not a Reload hater. I think it's a way more polished game in virtually every aspect, but it really bungles up certain aspects and this scene is a prime example. First off, one of my favorite things about the original P3's cutscene direction is its theatrical energy. Characters often step into center frame to deliver soliloquies to the audience. The lighting from the left side, while unrealistic, adds to the ethereal atmosphere--a feeling that Akihiko is having a sort of transcendent experience. In this scene, Akihiko looks absolutely tiny thanks to the fucked up PS2 model proportions, and it actually works for the scene's benefit! The way he's framed directly below Shinji, as if being looked down upon, judged for his actions, makes for a striking image. I find this framing really incredible when combined with Polydeuces's evolution too. You'll notice the way the two faces are positioned perfectly matches Caesar, Shiji taking the role of the larger body that shields the inner figure. The animation is just way better here too. Akihiko's grief progresses in distinct stages: he goes through all five stages of grief in fact. At first, he stands cool and collected, in denial as he speaks casually, but he leans onto the table as he gets heated. Soon, anger takes hold and he bangs his fists and screams at himself. He slowly loses feeling in his legs, realizing that nothing will bring Shinji back, and eventually falls to his knees as he wails and sobs with grief. The whole time, his back faces the camera, he refuses to engage with the audience and acknowledge his true feelings. Finally, however, he finds his inner strength and stands up again, finally facing the camera as he accepts Shinji's death and resolves to keep moving forward. Reload's angle isn't... terrible? But it kind of fails to capture any of this great framing and energy. The lack of gradual progression as Akihiko gets more and more desperate and eventually falls to his knees in despair isn't really captured anymore. He just kind of falls down, cries, and then stands back up, whereas originally, he leaned over the table, slammed it with his fists, his legs wobbled, he sunk to the floor sobbing, gazed upwards longingly, it's a much richer, more effective way to convey this scene.

"Living with Determination" is the most appropriate song for this heart-breaking and hopeful scene. We, as humans, are subject to an existence that is filled with the potential for celebration, indifference, and tragedy. As long as we exist as mortal persons, we can not escape a global environment in which chaos blurs the perception of the present and the perfectly predicted future. When obstacles in the form of soul-crushing events impede our path, each person must decide to act or to be pinned in place. Further complicating matters, often in the face of adversity, there exists no ideal solution: what is right is dubious; what is wrong is obscure; what is apathetic fails always to be glaringly obvious. Death gives value to us all, ironically enough by deducting from what inhabits this world. To lose someone beloved forces us to acknowledge our fleeting time and to examine the hearts of ourselves and others. Death is one the ultimate equalizers, striking at everyone born into this world, regardless of social class, religion, faith, or initial health. Tomorrow is not always a promise to anyone; the next day may be forbidden to live. With determination, one can decide to exist in today and endure its chaotic nature, as well as appreciate the joyous aspects that coexist with tragedy.

@@AyeeeItsAlii In the most abstract, comic book-like sense because she's from a "parallel timeline" that only exists so she can make appearances in spinoffs. She is not canon in the main timeline, which is the only one that matters in terms of canon. Changing definitions doesn't change the facts. You will never hear the Persona 3 cast refer to Door-kun as "she." Never. And that's all that matters.
@one-wingedangel51073 жыл бұрын
I find it interesting the Femc route actually offered a different option. It explored several what-ifs, one of those was hanging out with Shinji, which is probably her story's theme apart from the main theme of life and death, the butterfly effect where how one different course of action can result in an outcome not like the other. Regardless of the outcome, I feel bad for Akihiko since he felt powerless to help or prevent what happened to his best friend. But I have to say, Shinji in a coma is far more terrifying for me, you know he’s still alive but you don’t know if he'll wake up or be the same person you knew, and you can’t do anything about it but hope he gets better.
@Poet4823 жыл бұрын
@@one-wingedangel5107 He's literally already dying before getting shot because of his artificially-awakened persona, along with Strega. Him "surviving" only robs the story of one of its best scenes by watering it down significantly with dumb anime crap that these writers avoid because they know its bad. Akihiko losing it for a bit at Shinji's funeral is a much better scene overall. For the story, characters, and most importantly the theme of death itself that is what the entire game is about.

I think the new VA did a good job… I honestly feel like the new camera angle and hard cut to the persona awakening made it way less impactful. This wide shot gave him so much isolation on the screen. He’s alone, no one else is around but the enormous arrangement in front of him. It feels so personal, yet isolating. The way he just climbed up onto the stage screams Akihiko… I will always prefer the original VA but I’m not gonna act like his performance wasn’t good in Reload, I quite liked it. He’s a little less reserved emotionally, so the passionate quakiness of his voice sold me that it broke him.

Liam O'brien is a very talented VA. Even with how old this game is he nailed this scene. The new VA had big shoes to fill , and unfortunately he couldn't quite pull it off. In my opinion at least. this scene would have been more impactful if they gave you more interactions between akihiko and shinjro or just any back story with akihiko … but its so hallow..
@kerryvanskonsol792 Жыл бұрын
Well make sense that's akihiko and shinjiro persona actually slibing in mythology polydeuces and castor, but polydeuces was survive from battle but castor die from battlefield it's kinda sad mythology

Between the lack of interaction, the alright voice acting, and the sometimes questionable writing for the dialogue, this game has very few good scenes.

Did you see that shinji?

I first played Persona 4 Golden and then Persona 3 FES. After this scene, Persona 4 party members getting their ultimate personas lost their significance in my eyes.
