Persona 4 Golden - Trash or Treasure? | Truth Is Elusive

Before Persona 5 hit the stores, this was the be all and end all for the series. It wasn't going to get any better than this (well with Persona 4 Golden anyway, nobody seems to talk about the PS2 original these days). But does Persona 4 still hold up even after the release of the fifth main game, or could there possibly be a couple of things that it did better than Persona 5? Hang on, let me just find my Vita so we can find out. I'm sure it's around here somewhere...
Persona 4 was released for the PS2 in 2008, but everybody mainly discusses the Vita port, Persona 4 Golden. Persona 4 Golden contains extra features and goodies that Persona didn't have. Persona 4 Golden still remains as one of the most popular games in the series, and Persona 4 Golden even got a PC port after this Persona Golden video came out. @@Pduarte79 Played all of them. P3/P3P's and FES' ending feels really forced and doesn't have the emotion of the other games. The characters overall are pretty uninteresting and one noted. While P5's ending sucked, Royal's was one of the best, the antagonist in one of my favorites of any video game and the characters who didn't get a good conclusion in the original did in this. P4G is also my favorite game of all time and i have a lot of biased towards it, but it's amazing cast, one of the best written villains ever, great setting, great gameplay, incredibly explored themes, etc. make it much more heartbreaking at the ending.

i just started playing 4 and i'm getting into it but not quite as much as i got into 5. i'm suspecting the younger detective. if i'm right i think it's a little too obvious because at about 12-15 hours in he's pretty much the only one there is to suspect. kinda hope i'm wrong and the game manages to surprise me still but i have a strong feeling he's the killer. i can picture his facial expression going all crazy like akechi's did in 5 when he revealed himself.

@@puts1421 yeah i just recently beat both 3 fes and 4 for the first time and was surprised to enjoy them almost as much as 5. everyone complains about the teammate ai in fes but i found it easy to get them to do what i want most of the time by switching tactics. a lot of comments i see make me think people don't even realize you can switch tactics or just don't understand how it works.

Yes. But the Vita Version is still worth it. You can take it where ever you want. If you are travelling, there is nothing more "cozy" then playing some good games to beat dead time. Or on Vacation, in Hotelrooms etc.... Very cozy 😁

I’d have to make the argument that Ai’s (not necessarily Yumi’s) social link was the most engaging and interactive of them all. As much as I love the Persona series, it has a bit of an issue with the believability that all of these characters just agree with you and like you no matter what you say to them. I strongly believe that Persona 4 is the “slice-of-life” of the persona series and that’s why these “flavor of the week” type characters work. Yea you aren’t getting much technical benefits from engaging in their social links, but I feel like the point of engaging in them is because you’re genuinely interested in them as a character. When I first got the reversal for Ai, I freaked out, because up to that point there were little to no consequences to just answering whatever the hell you want, but now there were actual consequences to my life simulator (look at that!) It was honestly intriguing as hell and made me want to max her out that much more! (Even making me do a whole new game just to go the “real” lovers Route 😅). As for her shitty personality... To each their own? 🤷🏾‍♂️😂 ...Also, YUKIKO?!?!?

I liked Yumi's too actually. She wanted to be in High School plays to be someone else, to escape from life a bit. And I can totally get her being confused on how to act when her dad being the hospital. It also tore out my heart when she confessed and turned her back so that she wouldn't have to see herself get rejected by Yu. I unfortunately already decided to romance Naoto. (Which actually didn't happen because I said the wrong things...)

Second, the only people who can enter the Midnight Channel in the first place are those given the power by Final Boss Lady. Persona 5 is cool has tons of extra mechanics, it focuses mainly on battle and their cognitive mechanic I rank it a 9/10 its delicious Persona 4 is just special. It has its flaws like most games but it focuses mainly on character/ story development unlike p5's battle focused mechanics. P4 keeps you intrigued and guessing who the villain is and how to solve the mystery, as well as its theme is just a little more normal like then p5. While both wonder into a strange world it's how p4 did it that made it's better IMO than p5. I played p5 all the way through and though the characters where great and because it's a newer game it has more stuff...its got nothing on p4 and never will lol. Nah but on the real remake p4 on switch and goodbye p5. I kept playing p5 and it was just missing something that thing that keeps your nose in the game and makes you feel for the characters as if they where real people. .. Maybe they overdid p5 to TRY and make it better than p4 I don't know. But p4 IMO is a 15/10 Ps: yosuke is way better than ryuji, you where probably playing the game with a lean that p5 was better than p4 and not just playing p4 without the comparison factor. But p5 is good

As much as a I love Persona 4, I don't think I can ever go back to that game again. I tried playing it in New Game+ but I got bored real quick. In terms of gameplay, Persona 5 just beats Persona 4 in every aspect. The biggest downside of P4 is its dungeon. Sure, it was better than that god-awful Tartarus from P3 but after about 3 or 4 dungeons, it was more or less the same randomly-generated dungeon bullshit. Changing up the theme wasn't enough to alleviate the boredom that I experienced while I went through P4's dungeon. P5 spoiled me with its beautifully designed main story dungeons that were unique from one another and like I said, I can never go back to P4 and even P3 because of it. Speaking of boring dungeons, P5's Memento's was also boring but then Royal came along..

Honestly Ai was one of my favorite social links in Persona 4, she developed a lot in her social link, she went from: "Let's break all the rules, you slave" to "I wish I could be more like you". If you still don't agree, her social link was better than Nozomi's Social link in Persona 3.

Like, if you look at some of the 'unfocused' links in 5, compared to Ebihara's potential to reverse, permanently break, and change based on whether you date her early or just befriend her and let her open up, there's a fair amount to it mechanically that they could've done in 5 (and have half-finished, based on datamines), but didn't actually implement.

if you think the characters are weak then you weren't paying attention. If you started with P5 then I can understand why you'd feel like that since the P5 characters are weak, but not the P4 cast. Did you pay any attention to Ai's social link? The ending when she learns to see herself reflected in other people? Its such a great moment. Ryuji is so much worse than Yosuke are you joking? Ryuji is just a lesser Kanji (electric/physical persona, dyed blond hair, aggressive personality, uses blunt weapon, kinda stupid) except that Kanji is actually likable and endearing. Yes the P5 links give abilities or effects more than just exp boosts but they are so boring and bland. I actually care about the P4 links. Also the life simulator down time stuff is what's important, having a balance. Something P5 didn't do to its detriment. Why is P5 all Phantom Thieves all the time?? It really weakened the overall experience. Also also P4 the characters already have a dynamic before the game even starts. Yosuke, Chie, and Yukiko are in the same class, Chie and Yukiko are best friends. So what if Chie and Yosuke bicker? So do normal people

Erm...when did I say the Investigation Team was weak? In fact, my exact words were "I do love the main cast". I don't find them to have as strong of a connection as The Phantom Thieves, but that doesn't mean I dislike them. I mentioned how Kanji was a great character no matter what scene he was in, Yukiko's a sweetheart, and I grew to enjoy Naoto. Also, Persona 5 had the Hawaii and beach scenes for downtime, as well as arguably the culture festival. Granted, those were some of the only ones, which is what I pointed out in the video, but saying there's none whatsoever seems a bit overkill. I've also played through the whole of Ai's social link, but I'm sorry, I still think she's a manipulative person, even after she was no longer as cold. I haven't been inattentive to the game at all. I still really enjoy the story and some of the characters. I just found Persona 5's to be a little bit better. That's all.

P4 links with your team members are shit too, they evolve their personas just because you ranked 10 their social link. In 3 it awakens through personal resolution which is far better than shitty social link evolutions.

However, I will concede that it does leave their growth as a Schrodinger type of development dependant on whether you ranked them up or not Yes the p3 evolutions being tied directly to the plot are nice and all but the plot is so poorly paced with huge stretches of nothing happening that it does kind of dull the whole experience. Also the p3 social links are all awful. Kenji being a particular standout example of this for me. I haven't experienced the p3p female side to see if that changes my take on it overall

Its just that feeling man. Persona 4 makes you feel like you're actually there, and that you really are friends. Made me taste a genuineness that I had thought I lost in my highschool years, love, friendship, family, sadness, I felt human. I don't cry very often, but I cried at the Persona 4 ending. No more new adventures, no more nothing. Its also why I experienced a sort of culture shock when moving on to Persona 3, SEES feels more like acquaintances until the whole Shinji dies thing where they begin to awaken their second tier personas. I'm not dissing Persona 5 royal, it is very much an improvement over the original game and I fucking love Maruki's plotline and the new ending. Hell they even had you hanging out and being like friends, it very much tickled the Persona 4 experience.

You are the only person I've ever heard say 4's cast was worse than 5's; I dont dislike the 5 cast and I adore ryuji in particular, but in 5 I feel like some characters were bland, like Ann and Haru who were just boring and lacked any personality. Morg was better than teddie, like 90 percent of the time, but when he had his little breakdown-- he was like a little spoiled kid who didn't get what he wanted. Regardless, my point is, in p4 I never felt bored by a character and never did I ever actively dislike any characters in 4 as I did morg. p3s characters were alright, but the story of 3 was by far my favorite-- I cried like a fuckin baby.

Some personal thoughts. I’m playing the Royal right now, already beat the original 5. I think it’s unfair to judge persona 4 by persona 5 standards. That’d be like saying Kingdom Hearts is a bad game because Kingdom Hearts 2 was amazing. I get that all of us played 5 before we played 4, but in my honest opinion, persona 5 was a little full of itself. Sure, I loved some of the characters, the dungeon crawling wasn’t just the best in the series, but some of the best in all turn based jrpgs. The music was pretty great, anything that Lyn is part of is absolute fire, and some of the other songs are pretty great, too. It does have some misses. It took me 125 hours to beat vanilla persona 5 and after 40 hours, I’m only on Kaneshiro’s palace in Royal. The game loves exposition dumps to a fault. You could trim so much dialogue and have a better game here. And I think that’s the big thing that separates 4 from 5. 4 felt like a tighter game. It rolled in at 70-80 hours for me, I never got bored or felt burnt out. I started it and played it until I beat it. Compare this to Persona 5, I started playing it at the beginning of 2018, burnt out around Madarame’s Palace, picked it up when Joker was announced for smash, dropped it after Shido’s Palace, and finally finished the last of the game after I finished persona 4 and said “damn, maybe I was too hard on 5” in summer of 2019. 5 just felt too self important. Like why was Pankechi’s portion of the story so long? I swear, it had 3 save points in it. As in the exposition was so long, they thought it might take 3 sit downs to get through it. If a movie runs two hours, that’s one thing. You don’t watch a movie because you want to feel like a part of the story. Video games are different. If you take the control away from me for 2 hours, I just get frustrated and quit, hence why I stopped at Shido’s palace. And for all the love I give to Persona 5, to the point that I would go and play the director’s cut, the game is terribly paced. I swear, the main reason I love persona 4 more than persona 5 is because it took me 50-60 less hours to beat it, while maintaining the charm. Of course both games are masterpieces when held up against the abomination against nature that Persona 3 is. The ending was the only good part of that game, I do not care if you hate me for saying it, I did not have any fun in Tartarus, not even for a minute. If Mass Destruction wasn’t the battle theme, I probably would’ve used an evoker on myself. There’s my 2 cents on the modern persona trilogy. Playing fuck, marry, kill: fuck 5, marry 4, kill 3

There's a vocal minority out there that like to loudly complain that Persona (starting with P3) became less about the serious, grim stories of the SMT universe and more about being a dating sim. While P3 certainly shifted to that "social sim by day, dungeon crawler by night" hybrid gameplay, it still had a very dark tone and a story about dealing with death. But when P4 came out, the game's bright and vibrant colors, more jovial cast, and less "dark" story themes pushed those people over the edge. And the anti-Persona 4 complaints haven't stopped since. Even though P4 still deals with a lot of dark themes, it's overall appearance and light-hearted side content gives it a very different presentation, especially if you're familiar with the SMT games.

PriceyYeti40 Persona 4s characters are done well but for me Persona 5s characters just hit much harder. Persona 5 the main characters are outcasts, Rebels against a society that have done all of them wrong. Persona 4 the main characters feel more like the anime version of Scooby Doo. Also the story’s tone is done better in P5 it builds the tension slowly as you reach the next target. In P4 all the characters are just doing QuIRkY ThInGS until the plot comes bursting back in through the wall

How u feel about Persona 5, I feel about this game. Persona 4 Golden is my game of the decade. I love this game to pieces and will always come back to play it 9:15 and funny enough I just got finished with a complete social link playthrough of it and can actually say I almost platinumed the game because I love it that much, it's not perfect but it's definitely one of my favorite video games of all time.

@@TrashorTreasure everything can be carried over except the character levels (thank god) cuz that made completing the compendium a lot easier and unfortunately the max social links won't carry over but I think the reward u get from Margaret to show u completed them carries over. Honestly some of the social links I don't mind doing again, but then there r those like the fox where I'm glad it's over....

Cuz as much as I loved the social links of the main cast, there was one that was tedious and admittedly like u said some of the side characters social links are pretty boring and I 100% agree about how u feel about Ai Ebihara.....she's my most hated social link in this game and gah it was painful in playthroughs when I seen her and did my best to max out the social links only to miss the other max social links by 1 or 2 days....then I'd be thinking damn it....now I have to see this jerk next playthrough.....

Popular opinion!! Youske is better character and more developed than Ryuji. Youske is the True best friend in his SL events in difference to Ryuji that doesn't give that feeling. Also P5 is overated. Also all P5 waifu options are way better to me than all romance females in Persona 5.

I prefer Persona 4. At least in Persona for your characters don't get fatigue for days. And you can be in the other world as long as you want and it's only evening when you leave. In Persona 5 your characters can get so stressed out that they have to leave. I have yet to play persona 4 golden edition.

IMO the original PS2 release is the definitive version of the game. Unlike P5R, the additions in Golden are much more of a miss than a hit, in particular the problem you had with the game having too many trips and events is waaay less severe in the original release. This next point is personal opinion, obviously, but I just feel that Marie as a character doesn't really add anything to the plot other than acting as a haphazard justification to the final dungeon's existance. That last bit, I reiterate, is just my opinion and not something I perceive as being objectively truth, of course. Other than that, I love the original release to death, it's definitely one of the finest JRPG's of all time.

IMO, the Vita's library is comparable I'm size and quality with the 3DS', it just has less pure exclusives but makes up the difference in the number of games that could only be played portably on the Vita, and by having far less shovelware after PlayStation Mobile got shut down (mostly because it just wasn't popular enough to be profitable for a lot of shovelware developers).
