I really wish they hadn't pussied out and actually made Yosuke a romance option, because it puts all the callous remarks he's said into a totally different light. He's not *really* phobic, he's just insecure and scared, and considering the game takes place in the countryside where information isn't really big, you can't blame him. He can't just look it up on the internet, and he can't just ask people or even TRY to read up books on it, because everyone knows everyone. I'd be scared shitless and wouldn't be able to do it because the second someone finds out, the gossip mill will start spinning and I wouldn't want that at all. He's just forced into this corner of pretending to be 'normal' and not understanding himself because he's afraid of what people will think of him if they found out. It would've made for SUCH an interesting romantic story and character development and they WUSSED OUT.

Kanji accepting his interests and not caring for how others perceive in him that way + if they had actually made Kanji gay/bi could've been the kick in the nuts Yosuke needed to actually start thinking and coming to terms with his own sexuality and how he doesn't have to be toxically insecure about it. It would've been a natural domino effect that would've made for more interesting stories

I mean they didn't do that with Kanji either & that was because they wanted to make the game appeal to everyone despite personal beliefs or sexual orientation which is why you never get Kanji just flat out saying he is Gay or Naoto saying she is trans in the game. It's up to the player to interpret it which makes it more interesting to me since it can build up a discussion around this.

Personally as the game as it is, it seems like this was a last minute cut and most of that can be blamed on saki as throughout the game that is his motivation for the investigation team so the romance to also happen is kind of odd in this context of the final product. However there is a draft credits where the characters are in a different order which might hint that inclusion of saki wasn’t a thing at the time. I do like how arena kind of brought back this part of his character through labrys and how he doesn’t change his outlook on her even after it’s revealed she is a robot

I love how the camp event got changed, and the spoken dialogue really just confirms for me that Yuri Lowenthal was *the* perfect English casting for Yousuke. The delivery on "what a putz" gets me every time. Not to mention Lowenthal has a looot of experience with closeted queer characters from Kyo Kara Maoh. The tent scene is sooooo much better!! Yosuke being motivated to get Kanji out of there so he can get private time with Yu makes way more sense. And its hilarious him struggling to make up a straight sounding excuse so much that all he can think of is "you're tall" lol. Kanji mistaking that for being called fat = perfect excuse to still have him angry at the end and stuff plays out the same way. It works better to make Yosuke not seem like an asshole, the whole fight was clearly a complete accident this time. Great idea to fix things up!

Better way to improve the tent scene with Kanji: Have Yosuke get jealous that he doesn't get to have his aibo to himself, at which point it clicks with Kanji that Yosuke was making fun of him because he's insecure about his own sexuality, leading to their big fight. They’re learning slowly how to tell these stories and are constantly trying to correct their mistakes in order to tell them, which is good!

It would have been great if Atlus didn’t pussy out of this and stuck to making Yosuke a romance option. It would have been great representation especially during that time. But the thing that annoys me most about it is that if they stuck to making Yosuke gay in the final version, then all of his weird phobic remarks would have made so much more sense. He would have simply been a closeted gay guy who was struggling to come to terms with who he really was. But because they gave up on going down that route and didn’t put enough effort into polishing up his dialogue, he’s a lot more unlikeable in my opinion.

Anyway, I don’t think you understand how Yosuke’s romance would’ve been important to his character development. Persona 4 is a game about self discovery and self acceptance. During the game, Yosuke often says homophobic stuff despite being clearly really really close to the protagonist and saying things that could be interpreted as him having romantic interest towards the protagonist. That was originally meant to be internalised homophobia, Yosuke was meant to accept himself at some point. Without the romance, but with the jokes and the dialogue, we are left with a Yosuke who clearly has yet to accept himself. But yes, go on, say you’re happy about it because you’re unable to see beyond what’s written on the screen

You have no idea how relieved and happy I am to see yosuke in the camp scene acting this reasonably. It's just that he's so cringy all the time, with his attitude towards kanji, and even us if we're not manly enough. The camp scene being just an example, but here it's so much better! He's very much more reasonable as his reason is just that kanji is big or something like that, not because he's afraid kanji is going to do something Inappropriate just because he's who he is.

I have a personal theory about the hidden Yosuke romance route. I'm not sure if there are people who still don't know this, but you can have a poly relationship with Marie in P4G. My personal theory about it is that Atlus had worked on such idea for Yosuke, but they doubt if people in pre-2010 would accept such a thing.
