Well bonds typically are grown by having a better understanding of that person, it doesn't simply mean you hang out with them (or even have to be friends). Though to be a bit more clear, I assume this relationship/bond was one regarding rivals from the very start, so Joker got a feel for his enemy.

The real Joker got beaten, overdosed on "truth serum" (which btw is considered torture in accordance to the international treaties signed by Japan), and then forced into signing a confession (which would be deemed unusable in a court of law). Then he was interviewed by Sae. It wasn't until Sae met with Akechi that the Metaverse part of the plan came into play.

When she asks to see Akechi's phone just before going into Sae's palace, she's not doing it for curiosity and "OMG, Futaba failing to interact with people yet again", she asked for his phone so she could wire tap it and activate GPS. And then she spent a full night awake hacking Joker's phone so she could activate the Meta Nav remotely, track it by GPS as well so she would know Akechi was seeing Joker's phone when they were right in front of each other in the GPS. The true gamble here was having Joker convince Sae in what they didn't know would be a drugged up state

I thought the writing was starting to fall apart a little with all the Akechi praise he... Doesn't really earn (WOW, using rigging machines to RIG!? Anyone could've thought of that) and was about ready to write off the game as one of those with good characters but not an amazing story, like FE Fates. Now, I am just hyped as hell to finish this game.
