One other thing to add is the connection between human emotions and personal growth being a huge deal for both digimon and personas. Personas and digimon are affected can be corrupted or grow stronger depending on a humans mental state and emotions. That moment of sudden maturing and mental growth followed by a dope theme song kicking in as a new power awakens is such a vibe. Whether its a fat guitar rip as brave heart start playing or a guy saying "i am thou, thou art i", i always get goosebumps when it happens. Not many series do power ups quite like digimon and persona imo.

The Cyber Sleuth duology was my gateway into Persona & SMT, & when I first heard about Survive's battle system & primarily Visual Novel-esque focus, my first thought was "Oh, Devil Survivor with Digimon! Awesome!" so I agree with you 100%!!!!

The next Digimon Story game is gonna be O12 themed and I'm thinking probably less real world themed than CS since people complained about how bland the cyberspace was compared to the environments in previous story games.

I'm reminded of one of Macca's videos where he covered all 10 of the SMT series, and within which he made a comment like this: "If you've played Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, you've played the first half of Cybersleuth." It doesn't seem like anyone worked on both games, but that's another potential link.

I think it's an interesting concidence how close the series scale to each other. Digimon is usually accepted at Complex Multi with High Hyper arguments, while Persona is generally seen as Low Complex Multi with Mid Outer arguments through SMT chain-scaling.

Well, given SMT began as a game adaptation of a series of horror urban science fantasy stories called Digital Devil Story, of course they'd have a lot in common with Digimon, especially with the most mystical settings, where human imagination is the source of all monsterkind, including gods and demons.

Given what Ken's story arc in Adventure 02 is once you look into the whole picture that goes beyond the anime, you comparing Persona 5 to Adventure 02, personally speaking, just added a whole 'nother layer to not just Persona 5 specifically but Persona in general for me: thank you😄💖

I've only played Persona 5 (will probably do others) but as I was going through it I definitely felt it linking with the Digimon centers in my brain, most especially with the awakenings the primary characters go through. Something I really appreciated about Persona's big hero transformation moments was not only how they're prompted by strong emotional growth like in Digimon, but it really emphasized how daunting and straight up painful that can feel. The turmoil and fear and pain our protagonists feel as they awaken to their next level of self is very much mirrored with how personal growth, especially if you've experienced severe trauma, often works in real life. And the absolute jubilation that can emerge on the other side as the take in their new forms is represented as well. It's how I often pictured Digimon evolution working in real life. And in another similarity to Digimon, Persona shows what happens when awakenings are forced or brought about with a faulty mindset, similar to how hatred, rage, and selfishness can cause dark Digivolutions.

Been quietly watching your videos for awhile now as a big fan of the Digimon franchise. I'm also a big Persona & SMT fan so it was cool to see this video from you! I've always thought there were some similarities and that if some folks like the monster befriending aspect of some Digimon games (or Pokemon, though I never really got into those), then Persona and SMT would probably be enjoyable to them too. As a side note, I've always wished Cyber Sleuth would become an anime. I always grow a bit tired of the gameplay in those, but the stories are interesting and would make for a cool anime for sure.

I personally would love to see a Digimon game that is heavily inspired by gameplay ideas from P5, but with a tone and story more like seasons 1 and 2 e.g. focusing on personal growth rather than taking down the "man".

I grew with digimon before persona. I played Persona 5 before Cyber Sleuth. After playing both, CS had so many similarities to my memories of PS3. Surface level comparison, but an Atlus done Digimon game has potential.

I'm a lifelong Digimon fan who just started getting into Persona last year. I actually just finished P4G a couple weeks ago and told myself I needed a bit of a break before checking out P5R, but I love 02 and after drawing all those comparisons between the two, you're making me consider diving right back in!

Oh that rules! P5R is my favourite but I do think a break between games may be for the best! They're all massive and I've never played any of them back to back. That said, hope you enjoy P5 as much as I did when you get to it!

I had the same thought mid last year about 6 months after I beat p5r, ever since I’ve really been really wanting a digimon game in the style of persona, I know there’s been a couple that get close, but I feel like modern digimon is sort of having trouble finding it’s footing despite probably being more popular than ever, and I think that would be a good direction for them to lean into

I’m 38 and persona 5 is my favorite game of all time. Every other favorite are between SNES and PlayStation 1. Edit: while I didn’t get into the Digimon World Series, I loved Survive.

It would be neat to see more like that... Maybe you could have fun with similarities and oddities between Digimon and Sonic. "The one-time edgy rival to one of Nintendo's key franchises that had its first home-console game on SEGA Hardware, which has enjoyed some beloved franchise transforming non-game media but unfortunately struggled with jumping to stronger hardware despite earning some big fans of the rather unique results, and which has a mascot who has green-eyes that turn red for their most icon powered up form." Amusingly Sonic X has some elements baked into its premise that kinda evoke Digimon, and it aired in the gap between Frontiers ending and Savers/Data Squad starting. Plus there is a bit of fun to be had with the names of some of the content.

Hmm... I'd say while I do understand the appeal and connections between the two series, I'd say SMT has far less instances of bonding with the creatures under your command, and in that aspect, I wouldn't call it a good equivalent for myself. I simply have two different, separate reasons as to why I am fond of these two respective series. As for DDS, it takes its ideas and themes from a book by Aya Nishitani it adapts, which goes back to 1980's. Between release of the two, there was also an animated OVA.

Tamers was my favorite and i think Persona scratched that itch that i was missing. I guess fandom can be like energy, it doesn't die, it just shifts forms. I'd be into a P4 spinoff with Nanako in middle school with a Digimon like plot. Persona could benefit from Tri and Last Kizuna's approach.

I’ve heard before that Digimon is inspired to be more MST & Persona for kids, that makes me wonder if the reason we haven’t gotten more mature digimon games is because the Japanese team thinks it’s not needed when SMT & Persona exists already?
