to me, that's all down to player perspective, like yeah I love the hell out of p5 but it's too tame compared to something like p3, where I got the message of the game without having to search it up, and yeah the gameplay's improved, like that's not even down to personal preference, the gameplay HAS improved no matter what anyone says, but other than that, most of this is subjective

Definitely play P2, I beat 1,2 and 3 so I have to do 4 and 5 next. Didn't want to be like everyone else and skip the originals. P1 may be a bit hard to enjoy completely for a few reasons but ps2 was excellent and I liked the story more than 3.

Long story short, I never finished SMTI (I tried to play without a guide for what the spells are), and have completely given up on anything that includes social links. A team is working on a fan translation of the Eternal Punishment PSP remake but it's not complete yet. For the most part it's the same as the original PS1 translation, but the sheer amount of text is insane and then there's also Tatsuya's Scenario which adds a LOT more text.

I really want to, I REALLY want to but I really couldn't handle the graphics in 1&2, my eyes can't handle the movement and I have like a...not sure a gag reflex? Locke Gran yeah even when p1 and 2 are acknowledged by fans they mostly focus on Naoya and Tatsuya when thinking of protagonists. Some do acknowledge Maya though, just not as many from what I've seen. Also remakes for 1-3 were on that survey last year. Since the dancing games were on it too, remakes are looking closer to being possible

P4 nailed the feeling of a group of close friends, especially with all it's brilliant side moments... the camping trip, the 'up-close-and-personal' day in the city, the meetings at Junes, the inclusion of Nanako and Dojima into the core group, the beach trip, the skiing trip, omelette challenge, King's Game, hospital visits, return to Gekkoukan, the Love hotel, school festival, fireworks day.... I could just keep listing more. P4 mixes up a dark tale, with happy and funny events - which are usually fairly lengthy and interactive through the social stats. The balance makes the dark part of the story darker, the happy parts release the tension. P3's tone is consistantly dark. And P5's tone is consistantly sombre with a cast of individuals with seperate problems, rather than a group of friends. And any tension relief in both games is less frequent and short lived. Love all three games, but P4's casting, pacing and events make it so much more enoyable (outside of the dungeon crawling aspect, which for me P4 does the worst of the 3).

Persona 5 is the only Persona game that I've played. I've never played any of the previous Persona games of the franchise; therefore, I can't say silly stuff like Persona 5 being the BEST one. For all of the die-hard Persona fans since the beginning, feel free to condemn me for only playing Persona 5 all you want because I couldn't care less. That being said....Persona 5 is EASILY one of the most amazing games I've ever played in my whole entire life, and I've played many games. RPGs aren't even my thing honestly but I found it ironic that a fully turn based RPG changed me so much. 400 hours and the platinum trophy...I STILL didn't want to let go!

Let me put it this way. In P4, you chase after a serial killer but otherwise your life is normal. In P2, the villain wins and reality itself is destroyed. And when the protagonists comes back not to fix that mess because that's impossible but to make sure it doesn't happen again, his reward is to have his memory of everything completely erased. And he WELCOMES IT.

One person, once told me a joke: How does a Shin Megami Tensei fan screw in a lightbulb? He asks a Persona fan to do it and complains that it is not dark enough. No seriously, joking aside. Persona always was and will be about society trends, its problems and fighting against it. I sadly have not much knowledge of P1 and P2s plots, but I believe they were centered more around the lost decade and the situation of 90s Japan (in a symbolical way). Arguably darker times than than the 2000s of P3 and P4. Now that nationalism and populism is back on the rise, P5s plot got darker and represented this trend quite well.

Personally, I'm only familiar with P1 and the P2 duology and the latter was about emotionally broken children due to circumstances that could happen to anyone and the concept of family and memory. Then again, the whole "rumours become reality" thing could potentially apply to what you said, especially in EP with the New World Order (yes, THAT order. It's exactly what it looks like).

P1 actually has a very solid combat system; the "flaw" is that it's made for extremely hardcore strategic gamers. For starters, it has around thirty different types of damage types and the grid system. It is the type of combat system that you need to invest a long time in studying it and modify your formation every time your party gains new Personas and abilities, you have to decide whether you'll sacrifice safety for power (Maki is useless if you are attacked from behind) and so on and forth. The gameplay is for those who enjoy stuff like Dark Souls or Starcraft, or the mainline SMT games.

The PSP version is the remake. They did not take away anything from the graphics or the game play. In fact, they improved it and added extra content. You can download the game for free on a PSP emulator.

Persona 1 and 3 are my faves. P1 had a really surreal, eerie and at the same time dramatic feel. P2 had it as well but the moustache villain kinda ruined it for me. P3 has a dark vibe, which escalated to a rather gloomy end, but it felt very cohesive. P4 is great but it kinda feels too young for me. P5 has great visuals.

I only got into this series from Kubz Scouts. His Persona 5 play through started showing up so much I decided to watch him play 3 and 4. After the first two minutes of Persona 5 gameplay, I bought the game. 132 hours put into it on easy (Not great at games, so cut me some slack) I'm playing it again! I didn't focus on my social links as much as I should have, so going more on social links. And I'm dressing up as the P5 protagonist for Halloween! It actually came together really well!

It more than made up for the "lack of darkness" with mature themes IMO. Before you guys go off saying a kid could play P4, lemme remind you that Rise, a 15-year old girl, saying "I'm gonna reveal every last inch of myself!" Isn't exactly light hearted and cheerful. Sure it's one of the lighter installments of the series, but the darker elements always get ignored so people can compare it to P3 and 5. And even 2. P4 is still quite a mature game, but some people won't give it a chance because "the other games are darkeeerrrr." Not saying you guys are like that. Sorry for the rant.
