The flares are longer than some shotshells so may have difficulty feeding in some shotguns. But if they chamber properly, then yes, you can shoot flares out of your 12 ga. shotgun.

Yes, they are longer now, but that wasn't always the case. I remember flare shells being the same size as regular shot gun shells. Guess they have been redesigned to prevent mishaps. Back in the 90's, these flare shells were available everywhere and kept them on hand for emergency situations. Some time after that, they started to become unavailable, guessing this was due to the newer design.

You gonna eat that? Lol. I have had a practical use for the ammo, but not the weapon. In the past I traveled inland on a yacht Tennessee to Florida. Along the Tenn-Tom river supposedly somewhere I’m not gonna say what mile, boats have been fired on. This route is on the ICW loop, so a lot of Northerners travel annually through the heart of Dixie I know what your thinking right “banjos”, but any way there is a stretch, about 140 miles with no gas, or civilization, and only a few anchor points for larger vessels. On my boat I decided on the KSG 12 gauge. This weapons system allows you to select the type of round you want to fire. Traveling at night you would be a sitting duck on this river no wider than 150 meters. So I found that If you shave the flare down to 3 inches, it will cycle through your pump action 12 gauge, and you can illuminate your targets, and switch back to buckshot or slugs. Of course I encountered no resistance, but it is a great feature of the KSG design other than breaching rounds.

I've heard in some states there are black powder hunting seasons. So I wonder if you take part in it and maybe you can do a video about it. I think there is long list of interesting caveats in the hunting context and this has a survival component as well.

I was a paramedic in south Texas and went to an “accidental shooting” in which the victim was shot in the face by a flare gun. He received 2nd and 3rd degree burns to the left side of his face and he lost his left eye as it was literally shot out, as in “you’ll shoot your eye out…” Said victim was very much alive and angry. Yes, alcohol was involved.

I’d pay to see that. I used to love the Ramset when I was a glazier. I remember being on a job at a country club putting in a whole new front on their banquet hall and the head loon came over and asked us if we could keep the noise down as we were demo’ing the old glass and frames. The boss man told him we could try but this was a scheduled job and because it would be so loud and a lot dust and debris that it shouldn’t be done with a bunch of folks around. Long story short…that asshole stood there in our way most of the day talking and “supervising”. As I pulled the trusty ramset out and loaded it with the thoughts of “ I’ll keep it down alright” rolling thru my head… my boss looks at me, smiles and winks, and I let her go. BOOOM. scared the shit out of that old man and he finally escorted people away from the construction and left us alone. The look on his face was absolutely priceless. Since that day I’ve had a love for ramset.

Around 40 years ago, I tried firing a 12-gauge shotshell out of one of those flare guns. Back then, they did not use the long bottleneck flare shells, they were just shorter than a normal 12-gauge shotshell... The shotshell would not fully chamber, but I did not let that deter me -- I got a round file and proceeded to file material out of the barrel until it would chamber... Not really the smartest thing to do... I then proceeded to fire the 12-gauge shell while wearing a heavy leather motorcycle jacket, full coverage helmet, and think gauntlet type gloves... It definitely stung my hand in the process... The barrel ended up looking a lot like your example where the top half of it just disappeared... I doubt that many (if any) of the pellets made it out the front of the barrel -- everything just came out sideways... Not to let that deter me, I then made a barrel out of some drill stem pipe that had plenty of wall thickness and was the right inner diameter, brazing on a metal lug to the bottom to allow the barrel to pivot in the frame just like the original plastic barrel... I suspect that it would have worked a bit better and the failure point would have been the plastic breechplate of the flare gun, but as it turned out, the added wall thickness of the drill stem pipe was enough that when the firing pin struck the base of the shotshell, it missed the primer since I had raised the shotshell up just enough that the firing pin struck just below the bottom edge of the primer... My conclusion was that for a flare gun to be effecting in a self-defense situation, you probably needed to shove the barrel down the throat of your assailant before pulling the trigger... :)

On the inverse, you can load flares into a break open 12g shotgun if you have flares but no flare gun. You wont get any more power since the flare cartridge is meant to be the barrel, but it works to launch it for signal purposes. It's a very dirty powder though, you'll need to clean your gun thoroughly

@@bertg.6056 I had to look it up online, so thank you for making me finally getting around to it. Apparently, it originates from the early 1900's, where special was used in advertisement to refer to the highest quality product. This was then shortened to S on Led Zepplin tickets, apparently. It then worked its way into the Japanese school system, where it supposedly stood for "shuu", meaning excellent or exemplary. It became thoroughly integrated into Japanese culture, and then into the West via video games. That is the history behind S-tier, which I believe Paul Harell to be an excellent example of.

That's odd. I thought the same thing for the opposite reason. Nobody was there to stop me from doing this sort of thing when I was a kid so I tried all kinds of stuff. My mom was busy with five other kids. My dad was never home, and it was always the same excuse...died from a brain tumor. Neat how we both figured it out without loosing fingers over it though. He would set up demonstrations like this all the time when teaching courses for folks. We were free to go to the range practically anytime and had all the ammo we wanted, but man if he'd ever caught me out there playing with shotshells on my own, I'd definitely have caught the belt! I read a test report decades ago on the same subject after the product had just hit the market. One state, presuming it could be used as a weapon, promptly classified it as a handgun, thus banning it. Mini shells didn't exist yet, so the testers applied considerable persuasion to force the shell into the chamber, despite the ribs designed to prevent a shotgun shell from chambering. The flare gun experienced spontaneous disassembly when the trigger was pulled.

I remember they used to make an insert for a flare gun that would allow you to fire .22LR out of it. Basically a barrel with a shroud that fits the chamber, and uses the hammer as a... well... a hammer. It was legal by way of not being a complete firearm, and putting it into a flare gun counts as a Homemade Firearm, which is totally legal. That was probably a decade ago, and it's very possible things have changed and they've been discontinued.

Flares were very popular in the 70's. I had several pairs in denim. They kept people at a distance.

I did some tinkering with one of these some years ago. The projectiles in these "12 gauge" flares aren't actually 12 guage, they're 9/16" in (~.56 cal) diameter. With a normal 12 gauge shotgun barrel, the propellant gas just blows by, with little added benefit. However, if you make a ~20" barrel extension for the flare gun with the correct dimensions, you can get more than double the muzzle velocity. It was enough to punch through a pumpkin and a half-inch thick plywood board, I did this testing just after Halloween and those were the targets I had on hand. Making that barrel extension is pretty easy to do, there is some common size of tubing available at most hardware stores which is close enough in internal diameter to work, and it can be mated to the flare gun with some PVC fittings and epoxy.

@@flaircraft Thankfully none. I did the first couple test-fires with a string from behind cover, and after that just wore work gloves and eye protection. Basic safety precautions let you try a lot of fun things without risk of picking up nick-names like "Stubby".

There are barrel inserts for converting shotguns to various cartridges (.357, 9mm, .45, etc). It is illegal to convert a flare gun into a firearm in my jurisdiction, which is why I have never tried it. Maybe somebody in Texas has tried it. Of course, we all know that even if a Texan hasn't already tried it, Florida Man certainly has.

There was a juvenile in Toledo robbing people at gun point with a flare gun, he shot a lady in the face with one while car jacking her. She survived but I'm pretty certain she required extensive reconstructive surgery. If I remember correctly he was sentenced to 12 years. This was a couple of years ago but I'm sure you could find an article out there on it.

Having seen several videos involving reckless usage of a flare gun, the threat value comes out of the flare adhering to the target in some form or fashion, especially to clothing. The one incident that sticks in my memory is of a young man who was wearing swimming goggles and a thick overcoat as protective gear while his friend shot at him with a flare gun. Naturally, the flare deviated into the target's goggles, melted the plastic just enough to stick, and began burning in earnest as flares tend to do. Though both young men survived the encounter, the target received fairly bad burns to his face, neck, and upper chest, and may have suffered eye damage. With that in mind, flares should not be discounted in cases of true desparation, but at the same time they should not be relied upon either.

What about using a flare in a 12 gauge shotgun? Say hypothetically you ran out of shotgun shells in a survival situation and you found some flares. Would you get any more accuracy or velocity from using them in a longer barrel? I really enjoy your videos.

I think that is actually the reason the flares are 12 gauge. So you could use them out of your shotgun. But also having a plastic flare gun available means you can have the ability to fire flares when needed without needing to carry around a shotgun. Like fishing on boat.

Paul, I don't know how to reach you to suggest a video. I'm sure you have been dreading the day somebody brings this up. Recently, you did a couple of vids on Survival. In all the years you've been doing this series, I don't think I've ever seen you test the .22 lr AR-7 Survival Rifle which has been made over the years by various manufacturers, most recently by Henry Arms. It's nice to see you make this video Mr. Harrell. Several years ago as a young nurse's aide, I had the pleasure of caring for an older gentleman. He'd asked me how old I was (20 going on 21 at the time) and if I'd planned on purchasing any handguns after my 21st birthday. He told me if I had any financial issues that I could purchase a flare gun his reasoning being... "Son, it won't cost you more than $50, there's no legislation against where you can and can't carry them, and it'll burn through steel, leather, and flesh all the same." I've sat on that nugget of information for three years, thank you for providing some closure to what was otherwise a very strange encounter.

I was thinking of this exact same thing as well. He shot a guy up in a window from about half a street away if I remember. Gets it right through the window, hitting the guy square in the chest, and charged into the building and up the stairs. From this video, that's clearly a 1 in a million shot considering the accuracy on these things aren't good by any means. And whats more, I thought the flare would be a distraction to get inside the building, but you find the guy laying dead on the ground with a burning flare in his chest. In reality, at most that guy would have been startled and distracted, but entrely uninjured. You also see a lot in video games, a flare will set people on fire.

One of the “anchor-outs” in Sausalito fired a flare gun towards the local sheriff while they were appropriating his vessel, then hid in another boat (he was permitted to board); they took him out of there with flash bangs and chainsaw and in the process set the boat on fire, roasting his dog alive. He is being held on several charges, including assault and the death of his dog
