After going through aggressive radiation treatments on my neck, back in 2007, I could barley pull the trigger on my service pistol, Glock 22, due to nerve damage. The trigger felt like it was 25 or more lbs. and I would get a sharp pain that ran from my index finger up to my shoulder. My qualification scores were normally 116 to 118 out of a possible 120 before cancer, but almost a year after treatments I had a hard time shooting a score of 85. My buddy , Mike, was one of the range instructors and was working with me to get me to meet POST qualification standards. After two days of shooting and getting nowhere Mike suggested that I use my middle finger to pull the trigger. I gave it a try and found that the trigger was much easier to pull and there was no pain. After practicing for three days, I fired two post courses with a score of 113 & 115. The next day I fired two more courses with scores of 112 and 116. For the next four years I qualified shooting with my middle finger. I was able to go back to using my index finger the fifth year and until I retired in 2000.

Interestingly enough, when rapid-firing my Enfield No.4 Mk1, I use my middle finger as it's vastly faster. You pinch the bolt handle with your thumb and index finger, and your middle finger naturally lines up with the trigger. Using this method, I can easily shoot all 10 shots in 12 seconds (some people can do it in 5-6 seconds) while maintaining a 6"-8" group at 50 yards thanks to never having to lose my cheek weld or sight picture. I'm gonna stick to my index finger for my other guns, though.

When the Germans first encountered the BEF in Belgium during WWI they believed they were facing fully automatic fire in the hands of the common infantry. The Enfield bolt stroke is so short you can rack the next round in perfect harmony with the recoil and just let her rip. The mad minute they called it. You described the technique quite well. Apparently the Australians were particularly adept. I have been in the 5 sec range but I can't say I kept a decent group.

Paul I'm older than most of your viewers, as a kid we had town trash dumps where we were allowed to shoot as many rats as we could after it was closed for the day. All of us kids back then had bolt action 22's. I was a champ, shooting my bolt action Remington 513, secret was I left my first finger wrapped around the bolt with my thumb and shot with my middle finger. Once I got used to doing it that way I could shoot accurately and much faster than any of the other guys with bolt actions. It all came to an end when they started selling semi-auto 22's at Western Auto for cheap money. After that Christmas, there weren't any rats left at the dump to shoot. Those were the good old days. Thanks so much for your work I enjoy it very much.

I’ve been to combat twice (decorated both times as an SF Medic). 2. Humor is still great and it just doesn’t matter how many times you tell me not to. As for the technique. I’m betting a hole in a donut (not to be confused with a donut hole) that either technique could be equal or better if having been used and trained properly over the decades of your experience. Why do I make that bet :)? Because you demonstrated the technique with excellent results regardless of the decades of experience. Thank you for another great video and my morning humor!!!

Be careful when using the middle-finger with revolvers. When using the middle-finger with a revolver, the index-finger (trigger-finger) might get in the way of the gap between the cylinder and the barrel. The gases released between that gap might be strong enough to really damage your index-finger (especially, with high-caliber revolvers). When it comes to revolvers...just use your index-finger as the trigger-finger.

@gregelliott2537
@gregelliott2537 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly ,I've seen pics of people's thumbs that have been severely injured because of improper 'digit' placement while shooting higher powered revolvers. Same damage could occur to the index with automatics. Could lead to very nasty injuries.
@BrockLee3
@BrockLee3 2 жыл бұрын
@@Bustin_cider00 Yes. However, there are no real ways of laying your finger differently, which won't effect your aim. If you curl your index-finger, your aim will be off. The reason why the guy in the video was able to achieve better aim with his middle-finger was because the index-finger was used to help stabilize the gun on the right-side of the gun. You can't do that with the revolver; which is why his aim was off when he used his middle-finger as his trigger-finger with the revolver.
@jgarfunkle
@jgarfunkle 2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking that exact same thing. Easy way to catch a burn and possibly drop your gun which could also lead to an accidental discharge in freakish circumstances albeit still possible.
@BrockLee3
@BrockLee3 2 жыл бұрын
@@jgarfunkle Actually, dropping your firearm and having it go off is TOTALLY possible. It happened to the father of an old friend of mine. He came out of his shed in the morning to go the flea market with us. The .22 magnum caught the door-knob of the shed; got pulled out of its holster; it landed on its hammer. That was enough weight/force to cause it to shoot. The bullet went through the door of the shed; went through through two 2x4 studs; and. luckily got caught in another 2x4 in the ceiling of the shed. It missed going through his throat and into his brain by about a foot. If that revolver landed with its barrel pointing only 1/4 of an inch further to the East, he would have taken that bullet all the way to the hospital, and right into the morgue. If it was pointed about 1.5 inches further to the South, it would have shot his son (my best friend). I was standing behind his son, so I wasn't in much danger. It was at around 7:55 in the morning, and I was still half-asleep; but, nothing will fully wake you up like an accidental/negligent gunshot in the morning.

I definitely found pulling the trigger with the middle finger advantageous in cowboy shooting with a single action .45 LC with light target loads. It basically becomes point and shoot at that point. Course, my hands aren't as beefy as Paul's and you do still have to worry about keeping your finger clear of the cylinder gap.

Those clothes remind me a lot of my dad's old Vietnam fatigues, especially the slanted breast pockets to make for faster access. I used to dress as a Vietnam grunt in my dad's old fatigues each year in high school for Halloween, and my best friend who was super cut went as Rambo using my dad's worn out second set that he let him cut up for the costume. We used cardboard M16 cutouts and knife cutouts because that's all the school would allow us to have in the way of weapons to go with our costumes. Still, it was always a hit because of the authentic uniforms and jungle boots (I think he purchased them from the army when returning home).

That’s a touching story. It makes me think of my father. His step father was in the Army in Vietnam. My dad always wanted to be a soldier and lives a very disciplined, soldierly life but alas, was never allowed to join the Army due to chronic lifelong asthma. I instead joined the Army at 17 years old as a combat medic. Unfortunately my child will not be wearing any of my uniforms on Halloween, I discarded almost everything reminding me of the Army some years ago. I think the uniform reminds us of our time in service. For your father who served in Vietnam during a time when individuals were being drafted, that uniform may be a welcome reminder. For myself, who volunteered as a naive man to go to Iraq, I’d rather try and forget as much as possible.
