Personal Review of the Nautitech Open 46 Catamaran 2017

This is a really long and boring video that only someone who is serious about purchasing a catamaran will get any value out of. The video is my personal review of the Open 46 based on a 7 day charter in Croatia we completed in May. The Open 46 is a boat that we have been evaluating to purchase. What an absolutely brilliant review. Certainly not boring. Boat builders take note. And other reviewers should take a leaf out of this guy's book. Too often people gloss over technicalities and foibles probably because they are already in love with/have the boat in question and are far too subjective. More please.

Thank you very much for the interesting video and report of the boat, it goes into interesting deep detail. Just wanted to ask if you reckon true and have experienced a few specific points : - there is a lot of banging noise with fuel tanks not perfectly full due to the absence of verticle baffles inside them - engine rooms/cover are not insulated at all resulting in big engine noise audible from every part of the boat - the oblique and not vertical windows of the saloon result in great heat reverberation and high internal temperature - then a question, does the cat have at forehead of the hulls the classical sails/fenders room ? Are they spacious enough ? Thank you.

I, too, am considering a cruising catamaran in the 45 foot range. I am not a yachtsman , but am approaching retirement and can't think of a better way to frighten my wife and burn through retirement funds! You mentioned that you were considering other boats as well. How do you think the new Leopard 45, Lagoon 450S, Fountaine Pajot 47, and Bali 4.3 compare to the Nautitech?

In the Galley do you hit your head on the window beam looking and moving around forward? great review! You have a good eye for issues!

michael d There is a forward trim piece just aft of the windows that was a head banger for me. This piece of trim could be cut to get it out of the way. One big issue was the lack of light in the galley. I would add spots behind this trim piece to improve the counter and stove top lighting.

Good review! I have the open 40 Bavaria Nautitec , same issues as the 46, lighting in cabin is under indeed, stove small, but overall a great boat, loving it! In the video you did not put the engines in reverse while under sail, that would give you another 0.75 knot boat speed as the props will fold! Did you review any other 45 ft range boats? Our boat is just months old, butch the wife wants a bigger boat, we are likely going for the 46 owners version, and will have some issues you highlighted addressed. Thanks Jorgen

Thank you for the kind words. We have looked at the Lagoon 450S, FP 44, Leopard 44, Outremer 45 and 4x, and several others. We have sailed on many of them as well. Currently we are seriously considering the ITA 14.99 and are waiting for Hull No. 1 to be launched in early 2018 to make a final decision. We will also be attending the US Show this week to see the FP 47 and Leopard 45 along with a few other boats. We want to have a plan B boat selected should we decide against the ITA. I plan to post a video of our US boat show experience in the next few weeks.

The Marc Lombard designed boat is a great product, no issues there but there are serious issues in the process before you will have a new boat in your possession !

Thanks the video was very informative. I can't believe the poor lighting technology implementation. Nautitech needs to spend sometime researching advancements in LED lighting in the past 10 years. And water pressure should not be an issue in a boat in that price range. Obviously somebody didn't do their homework. Embarrassing. Thanks again.

Heat exchangers in the bilge's have got to be because that boat is in a place where it gets cold in Winter. To keep things from freezing down there.

Possible but it was very strange that there was no heat exchanger in the cabins themselves. The cabins would be cold but the bilge would be nice and toasty. A set up that made no sense to me.

geoffthefarmer Only one right now, the ITA 14.99, we are attending the US boat show in Oct to look at several others such as the Leopard 45 and Fountain Pajot 47. But the ITA is very interesting to us and we will be visiting the factory to see hull #1 in construction and then sailing it early next year.

This must pertain to a certain type of sailor. Just the fact that you're sitting out in the corners of the boat during a hot day or stormy one is enough to rule this out for me personally. Not that I'm looking to buy a boat if this caliber, but I can't even go beyond that. Would i charter one, sure. But spend $100's of thousands on one? No.

There are definitely pros and cons to these helm positions and each person needs to evaluate them based on their priorities. Personally I like these locations and would opt for them over the bulk head location or fly bridge. The only other option would be similar to the Outremer where you get a bulkhead location and then then two stern helm seats with tiller steering. You also have the the forward inside helm position of the Gunboat or HH boats but this only seems to work for larger cats.
