I played a ranger with Sneak Attack (2nd edition, skills and powers point buy ability). That along with the 2 weapon fighting, had me sometimes dealing over 100 points of damage. Only on the first attack though. The other attacks were pretty useless comparatively, but that first attack was epic. They nicknamed me Sir Cuisinart.

@@petefenner8905 It's a little hard to balance out two jobs nearly 3000 miles apart. She develops a lot more once she comes back permanently. It's still slow, she's still very reserved, so I think she chose that role for a reason, but there's a lot going on. And I mean it's fun to step into new shoes, even if you're not good at it. I mean look at the Irish mess Molly was, they still give Taliesin shit for that and he's one of the most beloved characters in the show.

To be fair back in the day they rejected a cushy job form the empire and the imperial kids (Caleb and Beau) were never fond of it. Rescuing Yessa was not the Empire’s goal, it was just their goal. You can see that during earlier episodes Molly could not interject in many conversation due to him not having high enough insight or skills. It frustrated his game play and you also should note that Molly always go to drinking first instead of talking to the party members. It was deliberately done to kill Molly and to have him refill a character that not only offsets the lack of healing from jester as well of being able to give insight and comfort to the party. Which was way more useful. Matt definitely did it in a way that make it memorable and fits with the storyline.

I don't really see that move as a roleplay friendly attack. Roleplaying as the demon, It's goal should be to deal with the threats, then just pick off the unconscious remainder of the party. So once Fjord was out of the picture, it's focus definitely should have moved elsewhere. This seems to be a fairly common trope in media I have seen, where enemies will happily compromise their own well being in the pursuit of a finishing blow. One of the few times I think Matt was a bad DM. It's not going easy on the players to stop focus fire on the dying defenseless member, it's realistic roleplay. If that defenseless member has a chance to get up soon and be a threat again, THEN it makes sense to finish the job, But from what we saw here, Fjord was not going to be a threat for the remainder of the fight.

@@LegDayLas Not always. If every single creature refuses to go for a killing blow it really doesn't make a lot of sense a lot of the time. Since they know magic exists and the danger of leaving loose ends its sometimes a safer bet to take a enemy out of the equation permanently. Besides the fact he even described the *demonic* bloodlust that took over and made the creature desire the blood of Fjord. The creature would also know that damage cleared the effect so he might not get the chance to deal massive crit damage on an unconscious creature should he let the moment slip by.

A Demon based on the lore would be a much more primal chaotic force than such rational thinking not to say it wouldn't be smart enough to prioritize threats but its also equally likely its chaotic evil nature could swing it to do something chaotic

@@oog9380 As I said in the original post I definitely disagree with enemies always refusing to get killing blows, because yes, you are totally right that that doesn't make logical sense. There are absolutely times when finishing off the weak player can be advantageous to the enemy, one such example being to prevent that player from being healed and back to being a dangerous threat. That said, this demon (at least from how matt was playing it) was not mindless, and would know how it's buzzing effected people, thus meaning it knew for a fact, Fjord was not a threat for the remainder of the battle, yet it decided to make it's last move a spiteful finishing blow anyway. As for the fact it's chaotic evil, sure, you could go for that explanation, but it's a bit of a cop out. I don't really consider chaotic to mean literally "does random shit for no reason" but hey, that could just be my opinion.

Maybe it did not have much to feed on in the last days or maybe sucking out Fjord's blood will strengthen the demon, so it would naturally go for a quick little feasting before attacking the rest of the group. Yes it still was at low HP and probably could have reacted in a different way but if any creature would first go for a few potentially lethal drops of blood it would probably have to be a chaotic, not very intelligent, blood-starved mosquito demon.

But if their max hp was reduced to 0, that's instant dead. if they go from 100 max/current, to 0 current and 20 max, that's regular unstable. if they then get little pops of heals, but their max hp keeps getting drained, and hits 0, that's dead. @@lilladykd5348 basically, we were in a sort of free roaming campaign where EVERYTHING is unpredictable, with strong creatures roaming among the weaker. We ran into a Tarrasque’s den by accident. I was crushed under it’s foot immediately (since we were ALL LEVEL 3 at this point) The fighter was swallowed alive along with his mount. The Druid wild-shaped into a dragonfly and noped out of there. The copper Dragonborn cleric (who had a thing for monsters) kept trying to check its gender, but couldn’t (DM decided it had a cloaca so we couldn’t tell) and decided to CLIMB THE TARRASQUE’S LEG UP TO THE CLOACA. He then pried his way INTO the cloaca, but just came across a fleshy wall. He couldn’t tell if it was a dick or not, so he let out his lightning breath attack. Electro stimulation led to the Tarrasque getting horny and rutting into the stone floor of the cavern. The sheer force of the Tarrasque’s dick pushing the cleric into the ground was enough to crush him to death. It will forever be the day we learned the reason the CR ratings were made, and has passed into legend among our group.

But it is DM's rule anyway, for such I mentioned RAW and RAI specifically.

Both Liam and Matt misunderstood Wall of Fire. If everyone is wise (and mobile) enough to never end their turn within 10 ft of it, it should only deal damage to those directly inside it as it appears - which was no one. It's great for dividing the battle field, but deals less damage than Fireball unless you manage to restrain enemies near it.

It helps that Cad actually has a useful kit that gives Tal options. Maybe whatever Molly was would have been great at higher levels but up to the point he got he really didn’t seem to have much. A couple extremely unreliable debuffs that relied on multiple layers of positive dice rolls to actually be helpful, meh armor, meh hitpoints and fairly low damage attacks was seemingly about all he had with that character.

@@troikas3353 his HP was actually above average because he took Toughness so he could use the Blood Hunter abilities without having to worry as much. When he landed hits his swords actually did a comparable amount of damage to the rest of the martials. He tried to lean on the Tiefling racial abilities too much, and they all had terribly low DCs so they weren’t very effective. He never sought out better armor. Much as I loved Molly, he was an interesting build gimped by a player who didn’t really know how to use the kit.

Molly was a test run so they were playing around with it from week to week, like they did gunslinger with Percy. They didn't quite get the balance right or get the hang of it in time.

The thing for me is like... Tal's characters feel like different aspects of himself, exaggerated to become full personalities on their own. Molly had some issues in combat, but he was still a heartfelt expression of a side of Taliesin. That was what made him special, and why he's still included in so much fanart even with Caduceus present. Molly was a hell of a person. The life of the party and the living icon of being "in the moment" - literally, someone with no past, and no desire to even know that past. Caduceus is a much better build for game mechanics, but he's also a new side of Tal that's just such a fucking joy to see. Cad is a beautiful soul. Hence making peace with refugee giants and making a case to the rest of the Nein to help them get their home back, even knowing that whatever happened on that mountain might not actually have anything to do with what's happening to the Blooming Grove. Even knowing that he might be killed. He'd just do that for them because he believes in that. I fucking adore both of these very different characters. And I'm glad the rest of the party is going along instead of just killing the giants and calling it a job completed. I see people say Cad is like Taliesin making a character specifically to ward off any more party deaths. That's the Caduceus showing in Tal. He wants to keep his friends from having that loss.

@@deffdefying4803 Except Sorcerers are one of the most sturdy classes in the entire game and Wizards are only glass cannons for the first 5 or so levels. Liam has just been super unlucky with his hit point rolls so far and he frankly doesn't put enough emphasis on his Shield spell.

My DM (who is really fun to play with) knows our AC and just says 'You get hit" and I have to guess if my Eldritch Knight should burn a 1st level spell slot or not.

To be fair all his spells are level 5 soell slots and he regains them through a short rest. It's more like casting fireball 3 times and each time Teammates just moved in the Ranger right before your turn.

Charm Person/Monster spells after 3rd edition were seriously bastardized and weaken horribly. The original spells and their effects were way more powerful and useful than the watered down 5e version. Still wouldn't have mattered though, since Beau attacked one, hence that one would have been freed of the spells effects and wouldn't have followed Fjords pantomime for them to surrender.

Can I just say there are a lot of good relationships in this show: both friendships and romances, both fictional and real. Without question, one of my favorites (if not my number one favorite) has got to be Travis and Ashley. They were fantastic being buddies as Grog and Pike and I love the constant support and encouragement that Travis gives Ashley now that she’s the barbarian.

Can we just talk for a moment and appreciate that Matt prepared an enormous battlemap + encounter + story just for the eventuality that the Mighty Nein talk with the Giants instead of killing them? And lets be real 90% of the time the Mighty Nein just kill their target I dont want to know how often Matt prepares so much optional content that the Mighty Nein never encounter.

To be fair, there's a greater probability that Matt created scenarios where the Nein would end up where they did whether they killed the Giants or not. Some investigation rolls or last dying gasps of a giant, or what not. Typically a DM can mold where a party ends up regardless of some of their choices. That said, Matt definitely deserves props for always being so thorough.
