In China, the 20th Century was marked by dramatic social and political changes. It saw the end of the Qing Dynasty, the emergence of regional warlord governments, a Japanese military occupation, the Chinese Civil War and the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It was equally eventful in the fields of music, painting, drama and literature. Behind this transformation was a group of remarkable individuals, men who persevered despite national and personal tragedies. A new ten-part documentary series explores their contributions and legacies.

Character of Shang Xirui in drama Winter Begonia was inspired by Mei Lanfang 's life and art. It's worth watching.

Thank you for this historical insight. I've recently become interested in this topic but was at a loss. Knowing it is much older art form then shown here, the significance isn't lost through this documentary. Much appreciated.

Thank you for your film, helping to get knowledge about great people as Mei Lanfang. I know about Peking Opera and have heard about Mei Lanfang as a singer but never assumed he was a great reformer of this kind of art. ❤

THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. 👍😭EXCELLENT NARRATING. AT THE START OF COVID I STARTED WATCHING CHINESE DRAMAS. THE FIRST DRAMA I WATCHED WAS "THE STORY OF YANXI PALACE IN THIS DRAMA ONE OF EMPEROR QIANLONG WAS A KUNKE OPERA SINGER. I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE TYPE OF SINGING AND COSTUMES. SINCE THEN I HAVE WATCHED BITS AND PIECES PERFORMANCES OF CHINESE OPERA IN THESE DRAMAS... WINTER BEGONIA AND DREAM OF RED MANSIONS. HOPEFULLY ONE DAY I WILL GET A CHANCE TO WATCH ONE OF THESE OPERAS IN TEXAS USA 🇺🇸

Excellent video. Personally, I don't like the explanation that Peking Opera is called "Peking Opera" because "it's always been called that. Is that the only reason why it has to keep being called that? 🙄 Interesting to learn that Lady General Mu Takes Command was the last song Mei Lanfang ever sang; the main aria sung in Yu opera is possibly my favorite Chinese opera performance. (No offense to Bejing Opera) That the Yu performance was adapted for Beijing opera means that it had that much of an impact. I'd like to see more videos like these on other major Chinese operatic styles, namely Yu, Suzhou, Yue and others. Excellent video, I learned a lot. It was a pleasure to learn some of the history of one of China's works of art.

The singing stands out the most from any opera in the world. Because this singing style can be done by both males and females. No other opera in the world has this singing style.

Oh, my gosh. The Chinese do many things well, but making music worth listening to isn't one of them. It sounds like someone scratching their fingers on a chalk board.
@Myacckt

It’s less about melody and more about dictation and carrying your voice wothout microphones. Pop voices / music only happened because of microphones. All ancient singing is loud and ear pearcing. Western opera also is reminiscent of this pre-mic era.

It is meant to be heard on stage without microphone. So high pitch is required if action is also needed. It is like combining ballet and Italian opera.

Back in the days, females are not allowed to perform on stage, male performers use fake tones to impersonate a female. It's difficult to master such singing styles. Because of this, Peking opera have its uniqueness, therefore passing down. Female performers requires to use fake voice as well.
