This was a really well made video! I’m also a big proponent of one way systems in CBD. Firstly, because everything in the CBD is close enough that even if you’re entering on a street going the “wrong” way, everything is close enough together that you can just park and walk one street over. Secondly (and more importantly), it helps to keep the traffic flowing - You’re absolutely right about the right hand turns killing traffic flow as they hold up everyone around them. A quick series of three left turns can be just as efficient as one right turn that takes ages because you have to wait for traffic. As a resident of Melbourne, where we don’t have a one way system through the CBD, it’s crazy to me that Perth is tearing theirs up.

This video is well thought out, gives strong counterpoints, and provides real solutions to Perth’s traffic issues, which is they’ll ignore it, do it anyways, and wonder why it hasn’t all of a sudden brought everyone back to spending time in the city.

City of Perth really have no clue how to get people back into the city. The whole state needs to increase alternatives to driving everywhere.

@@christryst yeah but not in town. I agree with the sentiment, the City of Vincent has put them in where it would have been cheaper and more effective for drivers residents and everyone else to put chicanes. They’ve done it in other areas, it seems planners need to do trial after trial when they could just look at a hundred years of research and do what works. The problem is they need to gently tiptoe around drivers who think they’re being massacred when the city puts so much as a bit of paint on the road.

What a weird argument. The city has more residents and visitors than before.

Aw man I wish I could have commented on this proposal. They need to get rid of as much traffic as possible from the city, not cater for it. Cities are for people, not traffic.
@vendalix3 ай бұрын
Current CAT buses are already overcrowded during peak times and heavily delayed by traffic as you've shown. I like the idea of dedicated bus lanes but that doesn't completely solve the issue of too many cars in the area and not enough room to walk. What the city needs in the next 10 years is to convert CAT buses to light rail to keep up with the inevitable growth. Light rail opens the door to restricting Hay Street and Murray Street to pedestrians, emergency and commercial vehicles only - which not only increases capacity but also improves travel times. It would essentially extend Hay Street and Murray Street Malls all the way to Milligan Street but with the addition of light rail replacing the existing Red CAT route. One of the constraints is the car parks between Hay Street and Murray Street which were built in a car-centric era a long time ago and is major source of traffic. The city is out growing these car parks and they should be removed to make way for future development. Don't get me wrong, I love driving to the city on weekends. But I would be happy to park in Elder Street or even Queens Gardens if it means taking free light rail to the city would only take a few minutes.
@majmorgan29112 ай бұрын
If you have a look at an old tram map on Perth Trams - Wikipedia, we had light rail in the 1950's on Hay and Muarry Street. We ripped it up and wonder why we have problems with traffic. However, these idiots think we need to widen lanes instead of looking back just 80 years ago to see when it all worked.

There's still a day or so left of the consultation period (2 August to 16 August 2024)! Let City of Perth know your thoughts: engage.perth.wa.gov.au/hay-street-william-to-elder-streetscape-revitalisation

Needs to be two way towards Subiaco not in the city. The one-way down the hill into Subiaco serves no purpose. Imagine what the town planners of yesteryear would think looking back to when tram lines ran along these roads and there was a two-way street. Modern planners have successfully neutered the functionality of perfectly good streets all over Perth and these numbskulls are still building roundabouts by the boatload thereby endangering pesdestrians & cyclists.

They destroyed Murray St, with traffic problems and EXTREME CAT bus delays! Idiots! I used to hate one-way, but then I realised how well it worked, especially with common sense, with the roads running parallel. I, of course, said this before I got to the point in your vid where you made this point 😂 BS, right 🙄

Neither the current roads or this new proposition or yours will help much tbh, the streets were set up when it was horse and carriages and tiny population! They need to be brutal and bulldoze a line of the newer buildings to make real space for road infrastructure.
@jezza41933 ай бұрын
But somehow cities around the world with 2 or 3 times Perth's population and are hundreds or even thousands of years old all have the same problem. They just are able manage the issue better by implementing plans that benifit the population instead of the near sighted plans of the length of a politicians term. Perth is less than 200 years old and there is nothing to see there anyway.

Did you time travel from the 60s and 70s? Jesus. Here's an idea: stop building infrastructure in the inner-city for single occupancy cars... Cars are the most inefficient transport we have and we desperately need to undo the stupid infrastructure of the past. The Netherlands did it, and traffic (and more importantly walking, cycling and PT trips) is way, way better. Have you seen US cities and how soulless they've become because of highway spaghetti and big roads? That's what you want? Damn, this country needs to be inoculated against this car-brained nonsense. Cars are useful, but shouldn't be for every single trip. Emergency, disability, delivery (and moving). That's what cars should be for. Other trips ought to be convenient by Public transport, walking and cycling. Stop demolishing things for wider roads, it will never fix traffic. Ever.
