Yeah, except that's horseshit. Perturabo was an evil nutcase well before he started getting angry over not getting credit for his Legions deeds. From the beginning he saw himself as the perfect architect with a mission to build a perfect legion and a perfect humanity. He's fundamentaly an SJW at heart, and I don't think he could ever have been satisfied with his role in the Imperium so long as other Primarchs were around to compromise his completely single-minded vision of what humanity had to be shaped into. His inner thoughts before he meets the Emperor betray his totalitarian spirit, and his actions when he got his legion prove he intended to act on them. His entire thing about not getting the glory and recognition he deserves is ultimately just him treating his own men like shit, and then growing more and more irate when they didn't magically transform into the perfect legion he envision in his mind. At first he blames his own Iron Warriors for this, and cracks down on them brutally, and then when this fails to produce his desired results he retreats even further into delusion and decides that his legion actually IS perfect, but his brother Primarch's are just gaslighting him out of envy. From the beginning he blamed everyone but himself, and did not hesitate to treat some of humanity's greatest warriors like disgraced conscripts so that he could FEEL better.

He's probably the most literal interpretation of a trait; Lord of iron. He is hard. Dense. Compact. Unwavering in his convictions, unwavering in his ideals, unwavering in his pride. And just like iron. Unable to bend. Purturabo does not slowly wither like fulgrim. He doesn't suffer self doubt like Lorgar. He dosnt surrender to circumstances like Konrad, he is not consumed by illogical hatred like Mortarion, nor hubristic curiosity like Magnus. Nor even was he malleable in his morals like Horus. And that's the point. Purturabo never bent, so he broke. Like iron.

Your bit about Perturabo making better versions of tools suggests a possible source for his duality. Perturabo sees a sword, he understands the need for and use of a sword, he perfects a sword. Perturabo sees that Dammekos wants a champion, a divine champion to secure his position, Perturabo understands the need for such a champion and the use of one, and he decides he will make himself into a perfect champion. The problem is, first, that's not who he is, second, he's got the eye of terror watching him at all times. So he can't be the perfect champion, and every time he's less than the perfect champion, he takes it personally. This would explain why he's so sensitive to barbs and nurses grudges. He's constantly measuring himself against this ideal he's created, and never able to be that. Same thing with the Emperor. Okay, his true father created him to be the Lord of Iron. He will be the Lord of Iron. Same process plays out. And the thing is, from that twisted perspective, you can see why he would reject affection from both. "You made it clear what you wanted. I made myself what you wanted. How dare you ask for more? What gives you the right to look for love when you wanted a tool?". Of course, Pert not actually being cold and emotionless, he's caught in a trap. He deeply wants this affection, but cannot allow himself to admit that. So he has to reject it or pretend it was never offered. It's what makes him fascinating to me. Though this may just be me projecting. I have issues with self-esteem I've had to work through. But to this day if someone compliments me my first impulse is to reject it. There's a part of me that still believes that anyone saying anything nice about me is either insulting, manipulating, or lying to me. If your self-image is false, all kinds of things hurt in weird ways. Which is not a recipe for rational decision making. I mean, I totally get how Peturabo could honestly congratulate his brother for winning in the moment, and feel genuinely glad for him, only for that feeling to rot into self loathing about how he should have done better on his statue, how it was not his brother's victory but his failure; for that to fester into a need to look at it again, to see where his work went wrong; and finally for that festering poison to burst out into physical rage. Hell, I can see him smashing his own statute, realizing how petulant and small this makes him look, and then smashing his brothers statue almost to save face. Perturabo is probably my favourite Primarch, just because the ways he's fucked up are so petty and mundane. And I love the idea of the Primarchs as being these things with human minds and flaws married to these insane mental and physical powers and the consequences of that.

There's definitely some duality. In Siege of Terra there's a decision Bo makes which seems like he's scared of failure. All this time he's wanted to be matched up against Dorn, to prove himself as the better. Yet when he's got the choice of a major siege objective he gives it to someone else. He gives logical reasons making it sound like he's perhaps being too smart, overthinking it. I can't help but feel he's worried Dorn might beat him, even in the short term. In defence of Bo perhaps a mistake in The Emperors craft, maybe due to the society he lived in, influence of Chaos always pushing at his psyche or all of them there seems to be a psychological issue. Bo seems to have perhaps a form of Asperger's disorder. He wants love from others but shuns them, doesn't truly seem to understand human interaction. He'd never be able to admit to himself that there was a psychology issue with himself as he'd view it as a failure of himself (similar to asking about whether others could see the warp storm), and thus never seek help. Several times glory deserved by the Iron Warriors was taken by other legions and Bo never spoke up and just got more bitter about it There is new material in Constantin Valdor book saying the cost of The Emperor gaining all his power was he'd slowly loose empathy himself (hence why the Primarchs view him so differently linked to how much later he met them). It sounds like The Emperor had a timescale on galactic conquest and so was rushing things. Part of the reason perhaps he pushed all the Primarchs to conquer quickly.

@john m but purge in dark eldar fashion. Inquisition is too mercifulll
@springy1014 жыл бұрын
john m I’m a lefty, but it seems like a lot of lefty issues with this game have to do with not perceiving the central irony to the setting: The Imperium are the bad guys. It resembles a wet dream of Stalin or Hitler. There doesn’t need to be female Space Marines because they aren’t even human, and can be read as the Imp’s willingness to sacrifice children for power. SM are transhuman, as well. I can understand the want for female guardsmen, but a lot of models can just be thought of as female in your head, cause they’re your dudes. Sisters of Battle are badass, only the Repentia are overly sexualized, although boob armor is dumb. Other representations of women like Wyches are pretty over the top, but again, this is 40k. It is also a very medieval mindset, another thing people don’t seem to understand. The Enlightenment was forgotten and discarded in the face of the horrors of 40k, where knowledge can be fatal. Some of Arch’s politics are stupid, but you can just not listen to him. He isn’t inciting violence or yelling fire in a crowded theater, so as long as he sticks to his platform’s rules, let the dude speak. How and why we perform how we do is interesting, as well as using critical lenses to discuss the themes of 40k, but I think many detractors are missing the point.

Perturabo was never meant to be a craftsman, he chose to become one out of interest. That's more independence than most primarchs.
@ultramarinescaptain38403 жыл бұрын
It is very strange, but I think Perturabos purpose was to be the support for his brothers, to offer knowledge, assistance, and counsel. Iron is a strong foundation because it never bends, and Perturabos Iron, was the amount of knowledge he had about a subject, the more he knows the stronger the foundation.

"How does one begin to explain such polar opposites?" That the Primarchs were more human their gene-father, Perturabo was just so easy to pigeon-hole that he began to believe that he was the pigeon hole, and that anything else he wanted he could never have.
@marckevinjavier18974 жыл бұрын
I do sometimes wonder, if indeed Perturabo hated to be loved or to be shown affection towards him, why would he disregard it yet when just like Arch said when Perturabo saw the Emperor for the first time he felt at home to his rightful family. I think he desperately wants attention so much that if someone would give him one it would signal that Perturabo is a "sissy" or a "fragile little boy" unlike his hardened brothers. There's also the fact that if he didn't raised the questioned of him seeing the Eye of Terror towards his brothers simply because they could not see it, why didn't he asked his father? Even if the Emperor could not see it much like Perturabo does, atleast the emperor could humor him.

This is a fantastic video. When Horus accepts Pettyrabo despite him murdering his own sister and realizing the damage he has done, it reveals what he's been looking for the whole time. Only family or someone that cares for you as family can give you unconditional love because of and despite of who you are. It is an often repeated theme in regards to the primarchs, that apart from one, none of them know a mothers love. The only one, the most level headed of all the primarchs, to be raised by both a father and a mother was Guilliman. As boring as people may find him, all the others only stand out because he is what you would expect of being the generic good guy; A responsible person who does the work while thinking ahead and comes at problems with both discipline and a human touch. Perturabo not only knows he's not superior, he knows that he is the worst and that he will never be accepted despite the good qualities he has and the anger of knowing that those talents are wasted on someone like him must be frustrating beyond human comprehension.

In my opinion, one thing that could've been done to help mitigate the problems that many of the Primarchs had with their behaviour would be if they didn't have the accelerated aging in their childhood stage. Childhood is a major building block to one's character. And I feel that the Primarch's biological disposition to skip from infancy to full-grown Adult in around 5 years caused just as much of a negative impact on their psyches as their environments did. If they were all given more time to mature and be tempered and guided by the adults that found them in their lives, chances are that some Primarchs like Perturabo could've become far less hostile then he is in canon.

Big E: Pery, scouts have found a race of xenos with time controlling powers, as the "Unbreakable Lord of Iron" you are the most qualified to kill them, but first... Perty: On it (I have defied dad's exceptions of me failing all the near impossible missions he always gives me and I will prove once again that I am truly the best around and nothing will ever keep me down, dispute the that everyone hates me and gives me no respect for no reason at all) Big E: ...but first I want you to work with Magnus and the Thousand Sons who have found a lead on how to nullify these xenos special powers. Magnus will need your expertise to finish their research quickly and make this xenocide very easy. Pery: has left the room ages ago while thinking "why does no one ever help me or give me any respect?"

"Weakness leads to bitterness. Bitterness leads to vengefulness. " - J. Bernt, son of Peter (attributed to) And none feel as weak as those who feel unable to change their fate, as the Iron Warriors did when fighting the Hurd.

I have been waiting for this video! Great work as always. Possibly the best war hammer videos out there. How much must this quality of work upset the person at GW harassing you!

Absolutely love all your Primarch videos! Would love to see one (or five) for every single one, as time and written source material allows of course. Great work!
