Perturabo is an interesting and complex character. He’s a flawed man, but not in some Greek tragic hero fashion - he is petty and prone to fits of rage. His flaws are his own and not because of some grand event, like Magnus or Angron. But Perturabo has a human depth because he is relatable: the hard working, competent man passes over for attention and recognition by others because he’s not part of the club. A man who can sabotage himself with his own choices and actions even while being the smartest man in the room. Pert does his tasks without complain, waiting for others to recognize him and while ignoring his own desires to be a builder and statesman more like Guilliman. And then he grows bitter and develops a martyrdom complex. The man is far more human in personality than many of his brothers.

Perturabo's reaction to hearing some of his sons refused to carry out the sack of Olympia and it making him smile is to me one of his defining character moments. Deep down what Perturabo needed was people to say 'no' to him and have the power to withstand his anger until he realized he was mistaken. His greatest fault was when he was wrong, no one could say 'no' without him killing them and he'd only realize later 'that was wrong...' and by then he was too deep into it.

Another overlord calling himself the master of mankind, sending him official commands to do things that will get thousands of his men killed for little gain because he knows Perturabo will do it. It was the same shit under a different banner. All he had left at that point really was his hatred for Dorn and such, that was the only thing really keeping him to the traitor cause and stopping him from bailing earlier. And then came the seige. His last chance to prove himself better than Dorn, to prove his Legion was better than Dorns, to finally show what he can do. And Horus turns the seige into a goddamn daemonic incursion. He makes it no longer a contest of legions, no longer a way of proving superiority, he takes everything that's keeping Perturabo there away. if Perturabo won then, but using the creatures of unreality as his weapons, it would be as if he was admitting he couldn't do it without their help. Admitting his legion wasn't good enough on his own. Even if he won then, he would have lost in his own eyes. So he said sod it. @librarybear34193 жыл бұрын
@@brya9681 Historically, one of the main reasons for using punishment of this scale was for mutiny, cowardice and desertion. In those cases, failure or success of the individual was irrelevant and the whole cohorts and legions had to face responsibility. If a general decides to remove 10% of his fighting force, then he mostly wants his men to fear him instead of the enemy. Adding to that, 10-man units were incredibly important for a legion: they trained, marched and fought together for years, and a failure of this scale would mean that any of the members could die as a punishment, in the hands of ones own unit. You are still correct, the punishment was ultimately outlawed in Byzantine by imperial decree, for the effect of both morale and loss of manpower. It was in use for some 800-900 years. The punishment actually outlived the Roman Empire.

Perturabo was also really close to Magnus, with the Crimson King being one of the few friends Perturabo made among the rest of the primarchs (and vice versa and well). Now in the book Magnus the Red: Master of Prospero, [SPOLIERS] there's a part where Perturabo breaks a psychic sextant that Magnus had asked him to build. The deal with the sextant was that after Perturabo created it, he figured out what Magnus was using it for. Perturabo was seriously trying to make a point, and his intentions were to protect Magnus. Even if Magnus does not agree about the danger or Perturabo's conclusion that sorcery should be left alone, I don't think he saw his actions as malicious.

I found the quote from the book. 'Brother, no!' cried Magnus as the pieces fell to the floor. 'Why?' Perturabo replaced the hammer on his workbench and said, 'Because I will play no part in aiding you in delving into things you have been told to leave well alone. Our father knows more than us. He has seen further than us. If He tells us there are regions of the warp into which even He does not dare look, then we are beholden to accept that.' Magnus stared at the ruined device in disbelief. Such a piece was the work of a master, a treasure that ought to have been held up as the epitome of the craftsman's art. Atharva saw Magnus' aura darken, like blood in the water. 'Knowing what you suspected, you could have destroyed the Antikythera at any time after its completion,' said Magnus with cold and controlled anger. 'But you waited until I was here to see you do It Why?' 'Because you needed to see it destroyed to truly understand.' Magnus let out a breath. 'You have a cruel streak in you, brother,' he said. 'Perhaps,' conceded Perturabo. 'But sometimes cruelty is the only way to make a point so clearly that nobody can ever mistake its intent.'

The Red Angel on the other hand did it after every time the World Eaters failed to capture a planet within the span of a Nucerian day. Perturabo may be brutal, but it's usually for a practical reason....usually. The struggle he has with expressing his emotions and feeling different, the struggle others who care about me have to try and express that in a way and I can understand and feel. I love how stupidly, absurdly, unnecessarily evil the Iron Warriors are. In Siege of Castellax they need to move a bunch of slaves away so they don't get stolen by the incoming Orks. What do they do? Make them lay down on the floor of a cargo train, then make another layer lay on top of them, then another and another until the carriage is packed full. They acknowledge that 90 percent will die but who cares, they're just slaves. Besides, orders were to move the slaves, nobody said they need to survive.

Tbf, Perturabo was already cracked before the emperor found him. Keep in mind that the emperor as the most powerful psyker can definitely read their minds. More of a drive for perfection in design than conviction to a cause like Rogal Dorn. Peturabo probably would have built the most absolutely *perfect* defenses for the Emperors palace, but him and his legion probably cared more about the goal of victory than about casualties or protecting the planet. Another thing I enjoy about these primarch books, or at least the three I have read, (Ferrus, Curze, and Perturabo), is that they usually make high ranking characters in the legion (typically the first captain) have some damn good character and conversations with their primarchs. *Spoiler warning ahead* Sevetar in the Curze book had ordered everyone off the bridge while Curze had one of his vision break downs. He helped him up and started having a conversation with him. It ended up with one of my favorite back-and-forth conversations that could be summarized as Curze: “Do you wish to know how you die?” Sevetar: “No thank you, I would prefer to find out myself.” Forrix in the perturabo book was cool and chill. He seemed to be the only one there trying to aid/support perturabo. When Perturabo ended having that self realization moment he broke down crying (so I remember), but Forrix was there to quite literally pick him up and reassure them. They also had a sorta “we will not talk about this” moment about Perturabo crying, which I found funny.

Ya know, trying to get a familial connection from an immortal "man" who can: polymorph, read your mind, manipulate reality, and see countless futures sounds kind of a near impossible feat.

Maybe that's the solution to the fermi paradox, once a species gets enough power into few enough hands to make meaningful changes to society, those people will have already been corrupted by said power and detached from any understanding of what society needs and will probably end up making things worse if not bringing the whole edifice down entirely...Hello there, Mr. Musk, Mr. Bezos, Mr. Gates...

I often wonder if he killed her because she was right and he couldn't bear to hear the truth. Or if it's because she was one of the few people he thought might understand him and she had just demonstrated that she had fundamentally misunderstood him just like everyone else.

Finished the Perturabo book a few weeks ago and I’m currently listening to Angel Exterminatus. I unironically think he’s my favourite Primarch. Yeah he can be very petty and petulant but goddamn, he’s so competent and there are moments where his humanity returns to him. Love the voices for him in both books too. Furthermore, big up my boi Forrix. Lastly, I hate the fact that he is a Daemon Primarch now

As a note, "tyrant" meant something a little different in Greece. A tyrant is just somebody that took power through unconventional means (not through democracy or aristocracy). It's not necessarily a bad thing to be, in fact it might mean you have way more popular support than all the other options.

Just listened to it, and B O Y is it something. Spoilers beneath. Astartes, let alone Iron Warriors, working to actually save people from the death of their planet? Perty being happy about that and having as healthy as is possible for him relationship with Magnus, with each appreciating each other? Perty actually HUGGING his beloved brother?? Their brotherhood and friendship amazingly being mirrored by the friendship of Ahriman and Forrix, or, as they get to know each other, Ahzek and Kyodomor? Yes YES Y E S *Y E S!*

I'm slowly turning a corner on the Iron Warriors. I used to think they were the odd man out in the Chaos legions for being all about persistence, patient siegecraft logistics and other decidedly non-chaotic things but the more I learn about their whacky side projects the more I like them.

Those time-manipulating xenos aged Perty like 20 thousand years, and he knew he was dying from that. He turned his armor into a life-support system beyond any other armor to ever exist. Still dying, he manages to fuck up multiple other Primarchs and then gets the Chaos gods to give him everything he wanted with almost no strings attached, fixing the whole "I'm dying" situation. He's by far the most badass Primarch - under different circumstances he would have been an amazing leader.
@Sigismund6972 жыл бұрын
You're thinking of Dantioch, not Perturabo he just wore his armor all along because he became EXCESSIVELY paranoid after the battle of Phall where a small group of IF managed to infiltrate his flagship and make it to his private chamber The next day he fired his Terminator bodyguards, his closest generals (the Trident) and replaced them with Automatons that never left his side

A little trivia if somone cares. In ancient Greece, on which Olympia is obviously based, title of tyrant wasn't necessarily bad. It just meant someone who gained power in a illegimate way, but that could also mean someone who managed to overthrow old oppressive system. In this line of thinking George Washington, or Simon Bolivar would be tyrants, even though we would never call them that way. So Perty's dad being a tyrant doesn't necessarily mean that he was oppressive, unjust, or had any negative traits we associate with this title nowdays, it probably just meant that he climbed to power himself, without being destined to by any laws or tradition.
