Great video. Might look into getting a mic though I could barely hear you.

Hi Natalie, I found your video really helpful as I am looking to buy this system soon for my horse! In the video you talked about the long and low setting/position. Would you be able to briefly explain the other positions? Thanks :)
@NatalieSheppard6 жыл бұрын
Angelina Muller I am so glad you found it helpful! When you buy your system, it will come with a great set of instructions for the various positions, including pictures. They basically progress from long and low, to a higher, more rounded headset that causes the horse to lift and strengthen their topline more intensely.

Thanks for providing us with a video to put this on as it is not easy. However, I just saw another video by Pessoa and the rollers don't go by the flanks but at the bit (or halter).
@NatalieSheppard5 жыл бұрын
Daniele Payen-Jaekel It is possible they were showing set up for one of the other positions, the instructions that come with the system show four or five possibilities that target different areas during exercise! :)

@@NatalieSheppard They show position one with the rope fed through the center ring and then the roller clip on the bit with the fixed end going back to the surcingle. instead of the rope fed through the halter.

Jennifer Albertson I think this one is position two then? I just tried a couple and stuck with the one that made him move the way I wanted :) everyone should explore all the options with their horse!

Thank you Natalie this was really helpful just got a new horse that also needs her top line building up and bought one. Literally the only video on KZbin that isn’t mega complicated😂 x

Glad you found it helpful! ^_^ Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions about the Pessoa, I have found it to be a very useful system.

Where can you buy the complete system?
@NatalieSheppard7 жыл бұрын
Most online tack stores like Stateline, Dover, or SmartPak should carry it! :)

this system has very limited effect in horse training. once the horse had figured out the rear aid around the hocks it ignores it after a few uses. Adjustment is required by someone who really knows what they are doing otherwise you just end up with a horse that looks like it is in a ploughing competition. People mistake the shape of the horse for being on the hind or rear when it is actually on the forehand. Ask most people and they will tell you carriage horses push with the rear when in fact they spend most of the time pulling on the fore and this is what this system does in the uneducated hands, you end up with shortened front movement with low impulsion from the hind also a head that would make a good battering ram.

As I explain in the video, I'm not after a "headset" or body shape, this horse specifically suffers from a tight back and needs to be encouraged to stretch his neck low and forward as he moves, a sort of rehab to loosen his back muscles and strengthen them in a different way than carrying himself tight has done. For this purpose, we have had great success in using this system and the horse in the video has improved dramatically, now carrying himself that way while lunging freely. To each their own - if it works for you use it! If not, there are other options =)

Natalie Sheppard ..... I would suggest a chambon for that and gets much better results. long and low then bring them up slowly with side rein fixed at the saddle horn/pommel to mimic the riders hands.
@NatalieSheppard6 жыл бұрын
As I said, to each their own :) This system worked really well for me and for this horse, and I'm glad you've found something that works for you! I use different methods and equipment for every horse according to what they respond well to, and have certainly used side reins as you recommend in some instances, though I have never found a chambon effective in my personal experience.
@skippyone27696 жыл бұрын
Natalie Sheppard If you have never managed to get results with a Chambon I suggest you may be using it incorrectly. Anything that acts as by inflicting pain via the bit to correct a horse us wrong. when the horse flexes it hinds the result is a pull on the bit then the horse loses impulsion and moves to the forehand. Horses trained on a chambon learn self carriage and work over the back without force or pain. the natural swing from collection is attained too. horses trained on a Pesos rarely develop swing just adopt a shape. This is why none of the top Dressage trainers would recommend it. watch Will Faber training on his Arttoride channel on KZbin and learn his methods for fitter better horses that develop the right muscles to carry themselves without leaning on the bit when ridden which is also a failing of the Pesos system. used for the right reasons at the right time it might help some horses in rehab due to stifle of hock injury.....then I would use it only then.

Great job explaining the untangle part lol. The first time I put my 17h TB in it, I actually left the side clips on his halter, in resting position. After a few turns I hooked to his breast plate, loose for awhile till he built up muscle. Some crank it too quick and there poor horses backs are so tender after. Great video 👍

Great video. Thanks for taking the time to explain to us. I'm thinking of getting one of these Pessoa systems. Just not sure. I heard there is another great make of surcingle systems.

Good stuff, but I thought you were supposed to pull the rope through the loops on the horse's sides, then attach the pulley section to the horses bit or bridle loops. Do you find this way better or does it not make much of a difference?
@NatalieSheppard4 жыл бұрын
The kit comes with instructions for four or five different configurations! This is just the setup I found most useful for this horse - he had tightness issues in his lower back and needed regular stretching to keep him comfortable under saddle!
@gillianferraccioli82484 жыл бұрын
Your the first I have seen putting it in correctly! So many put the pullies on the bit. 🙈 Well done!
@NatalieSheppard4 жыл бұрын
Gillian Ferraccioli Thank you! But also there is no bit in this setup, just the halter here. I don’t like to attach things to a bit unless I can control the pressure and release, as with reins or long lines :)
@lesliefox34313 жыл бұрын
www.smartpakequine.com/pt/pessoa-lungeing-system-4978 Actually the pulley clips do go to the bit/halter. This is Straight from the Pessoa brand dealer! The pulleys are designed to creat the lease resistance at the bit/halter vs just a rope roughly sliding around. This is actually the INCORRECT way to set it up

What a happy horse! His ears are back and his face is being pulled to his stomach for our satisfaction. Another torture gadget
@NatalieSheppard7 жыл бұрын
If you watch the full video I explain we are not pulling him up and in to a frame, we are encouraging a low carriage and rounding of the back. This horse has a history of tightness in his back, and this exercise has worked wonders to keep him happy and healthy :) There is no chin-to-chest here.
@abbipedley55656 жыл бұрын
Haha Omg arianna you can’t be serious! His head is not being pulled in at all she said she never uses the other positions which hold their head in this encourages them to work correctly and low. She knows what she’s doing!
