I asked a Trump supporter about this (quite subtly so as to seem on-side) and where the story might have come from. He directed me to a video on this website. Search for ''Oliveira'', ''Springfield'' and ''cats''. To summarise:- The video seems to have been made after the debate. None of the claims are evidenced. And if you want to watch the video you can draw your own conclusions about the veracity of those making claims. And - attempting some sort of balance. There might well have been someone who did something like this. There's video of an American (rather than immigrant) where it appears police are asking whether she had consumed a pet (presumably the carcass was on the scene off camera). It looks like a mental health issue (as you'd expect) or drugs issue, or a mix of the two. So maybe someone did, somewhere in that state, and Trump's read some anti-immigrant source that's used some weird story to its own ends. That's about as balanced as I can be. Why am I reaching for balance? I'm anticipating a Trump fan saying ''you can't prove it didn't happen'', which is true. It's impossible to prove negatives across large populations. That's how grand claims find traction. Also - it was quite funny in the sense it seemed to come from nowhere. I think the question was about unemployment figures when he left office, or some economic thing. I doubt anyone had ''they're eating the cats'' in answer bingo.
