If you truly want someone to change there mind or move there position a more tactful approach would be important. Certainly fewer interruptions on both sides are essential, greater chances to speak for both sides. Talk of fact should be substantiated with evidence where possible - James often has factual evidence to rely on but callers rarely have this to hand or the opportunity to provide it where they have some evidence. As James is a professional I can absolutely understand that he will be better resourced and better prepared. Whilst I understand James's style is quite adversarial - this will not help with many callers that have opposing views. Perhaps James should chair a debate with two callers with opposing views from opposite sides of the spectrum and manage such a discussion as an impartial/neutral chair. This may lead to one caller to actually reconsider and revise their position having considered the facts and having a chance to contribute from their own perspective.

That woman is completely ignorant on immigration. Once you go through the process of citizenship, there is a period of 10 years where you have to pay into the NHS. Every 2 1/2 years you pay something like £650 per year. It's also worth noting that despite making up 15% of the total population of UK, those who are of BAME background make up roughly 46% of all NHS medica staff. You only need to walk into your local hospital/dental practice etc to see it for your self. Furthermore, when you go through the process, you are not allowed to claim benefits/public funds. I know this because I am going through such process atm. I have already paid over £15k in application fees and solicitor costs. EDIT: It is possible to claim benefits if you're a parent of minors or disabled(not all cases), but this is rare. And the benefits you receive will be no different to what everyone else receives. There is no special treatment.

And all the time she has been working as a structural engineer for a civil engineering company, paying tax and NI and therefore contributing to the U.K. economy.

I'm not British, I don't live in your country though I visit, nothing that happens there affects me, but I love this show and James O'Brien. He handles these people masterfully by just asking why and asking them to give reasons for their beliefs. This show reflects what is happening here in the US and how so many people are just like this lady. They are anxious, mad and worried about something but they don't know why and can't articulate any real reasons or policy. They are this way because their fears are being stoked for political gain by parties whose only goal is to stay in power and perpetuate their own power and gains. Sad really, but reflective of too many people these days.

They are this way because they have grown up and seen first hand how immigration destroys a community , I have witnessed it first hand myself .

As someone in the United States, I can tell you with first hand experience that people's anger and disillusionment are very easy to manipulate for personal gain.

People are unfortunately conservative in nature, and they hate change. The right wing knows this, and prey on that fear of change.

It’s embarrassing how someone can have a strong opinion on something they know nothing about and even have the confidence to phone a national radio. Who does that?

Unfortunately, it's not that rare. Only some people fully understand their own circumstances regarding government benefits, taxation, housing, grants etc. Most have no idea at all about people in any different circumstances to their own - it is not in their experience. However, it seems not to have any effect on their ability to 'know' things about which they have no experience and no information. This is true, even if the information that would inform them is published and readily accessible.
