Storystein SAME I miss my rattie named Tiny sooo much. I've had bunch of rats before, but he was always my favorite. You have no idea how affectionate he was. He would lay on my chest and just nap on me and when we were playing he would bounce around a lot because he couldn't contain his excitement. I'd like watching him in his little hammock made out of cheese, and he would always come when he was called. I remember my mom over the phone told me while I was on vacation that he died and I didn't cry or anything and tried not to think about it because I didn't want to ruin my vacation so then after my trip I didn't think about it then either but now I think it's all coming back now.

Definitly. The best option would probably be to talk to the vet first before purchasing any medication. Some medications will say how many mg/ml and how many mg/kg for cats or dogs, but you have to be pretty handy with math to figure it out for a small animal, and you have to know their weight.

I got two rats from a local pet shop. Their owner dropped them off at the shop to be resold because they didn't want them anymore I guess. They were very shy. One of them kept biting. Then about 20 days later the bitey one gave birth! She doesn't bite much at all anymore but will go for your feet if you have socks on. I kept one baby and gave two pairs to a rat rescue. The baby is super friendly. The older two are still pretty shy though they've warmed up to me a bit. I think it was all in the way they were raised.

Rats really are noble creatures. And highly intelligent if you take the time to observe them. A pet rat bought from a reliable source can be just as rewarding as, say, a dog or cat.
@PJay-wy5fx8 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree with you on rats being cheap. They are very prone to disease (respiratory issues, tumors, to mention a few) and they rack up vet bills incredibly fast! Also please do not endorse store bought animals. Store bought animals (all spiecies) usually come from mills, where mothers are worn out to have litter after litter, and for every (seemingly) healthy animal, 2-6 usually have died horrible deaths because there is no veterenary care given (profits have to be made). Shelters/rescues are packed with great personalities, animals are usually not there because there is something wrong with them, but because owners want to get rid of them for personal reasons. If a shelterrescue is not an option, go to a non-profit breeder.

Sorry but woodshavings are not good bedding for rats, as the dust/fine particles that come with the shavings are not good for rats delicate lungs. Aside from that, very informative video thank you.
@HappyTailsAnimals9 жыл бұрын
+Maddey Willis Thanks for the comment, it does depend on the type of wood shaving that is used something I should have mentioned. There is safe wood shaving for small animals. All depends on the type of wood and the brand.
@maddeywillis4919 жыл бұрын
Ah ok, thank you for clearing that up! :) Rats are such smart animals! I believe soft woods like pine and spruce are not suitable and neither is birch? x
@HappyTailsAnimals9 жыл бұрын
+Maddey Willis That is correct those are not good for any small animal. I have not seen birch wood shaving used, but it is used as chew toys for rabbits and is safe, so I would assume that as long as there are no added chemicals birch wood should be safe. Aspen is a safe wood shavings bedding. I prefer other types of bedding, but this can work for someone on a budget.

Just wanted to check this video out because your videos are amazing! XD I currently have 4 rats, two males and two females (separated). I have my males out for lap time while I'm watching these videos. The little one (he's about 6-7 weeks old) is playing with my older boy (10 weeks old). The older is having fun, with the occasional annoyance of his cage mate insisting on humping his side. The females that I received from the pet store are actually pregnant right now >.> They're stomachs are becoming noticeably larger, and even though they're sisters I'm not up for experimenting with communal nesting. So they'll be separated, hopefully before they give birth. Hope they do well~

The boy rats weren't selling as much as the girls, and the price of them was half the price of the girls because the shop were desperate to get rid of them before they got big! I fell in love with 2 of them and begged my mum for them! She hated rats but ended up falling in love with them aswell!

Older pet rats bond just as well as younger rats! It comes down to their personality. Also, chocolate is fine in very small amounts. Researchers often use it as a reward because rats love it so much.

Older feeder rats can be difficult to handle especially for new pet owners. Chocolate is not safe in large amounts and it can be hard for people to know what amount is safe to give, so I'm my opinion why give your rats something that is potentially harmful if there are so many other great options. I encourage all pet owners, better safe than sorry!

As to biting, I've had this happen a few times, in all instances, the rat was unwell and confused and being bitten was my own fault. They can bite very hard and they can also lock their jaws, making it difficult to remove them. That said, 3 bites out of 15 years and many rats isn't too bad. One rat bit me as she panicked when I went to give her baytril (via a needleless syringe) and that really hurt as she bit through to the bone of the finger, another one bit me on the nose (wasn't too bad thankfully) as she panicked (this rat passed away less than a week later due to advanced lung disease) and the 3rd rat managed to fall off my bed onto the floor and I'm pretty sure she was blind and panicked when I picked her up. Not as bad as bite #1, but worse than #2. For those new to rats, it is very rare for a rat to bite its owner. Just generally handling the rat from a young age, and handling it gently is enough to establish a bond. Just understand that sometimes, a rat will panic due to health issues and may bite. It's not deliberate, it's a defence mechanism. Their teeth is their own method of defence...

I used to have a rat. Her name was Splinta like splinter from tmnt. She was happy when I spent a lot of time with her but was very sad when I could not see her because I was at my dads. I miss her so much that I cry when I think of her.😭

Just a few things to say about this video. Most information is spot on, however, certain types of chocolates (in small quantities) actually help rats with respiratory problems. As for feeder rats being cheaper, while this is true, you also run a higher risk of getting a rat with little to no socializing before they were sold or health problems. I'm not saying that they can't make good pets, just that it is something you have to keep in mind when picking them up. Also, there's a chance that you may pick up a pregnant female without knowing, as a lot of pet stores don't bother separating genders or sexing them at all.
@HappyTailsAnimals9 жыл бұрын
Please do not try to cure your rats respiratory infections with chocolate. Please seek out professional medical help from a Veterinarian. Any rat can come with health issues and even ones sold as pets are often not tame. That's why I explain how to pick out a rat that is healthy. Suzie who is in the video was a feeder rat who had never been socialized. She has never bitten me and as you can see she is as sweet as can be.
@JinxiiMinx9 жыл бұрын
Happy Tails Absolutely! I'd never treat them with it, but it's certainly not toxic in small quantities and can help aid in MINOR issues. Some vets will even recommend you offer it to them occasionally to assist them in any problems they may be experiencing. And, again, I know that feeder rats can make just as great pets as those from a reputable breeder, but it is something that people should know before going and picking them up. The more you know, the better.

+Lexi Most people will not feed in moderation, so I advise to just not feed that because just a little too much can be harmful.

No type of wood shaving is technically safe when it involves small animals like rats and mice; wood shavings, ESPECIALLY aspen, can cause respiratory infections because of the dust and particles from the substrate. If anything, use a soft, fragrant free bedding, paper shreds (free of any kind of inks, unless soy-based) and any kind of blankets, as she mentioned. It's just better overall to avoid any kind of wood shaving based substrate for the overall health of your pet. Otherwise, very informative video! :)

I think water bowls are better than bottles. The ball bearings in bottles make a hell of a loud rattling noise that can be very annoying. The bottle tends to drip long after the rats have finished drinking which leads to dampness problems. Hang the bowl at a height so the rats can just about reach it on their back legs. This lessens the problems of knocking it over or crapping in it.
@AS-gi4cg8 жыл бұрын
I usually do not like disagree with people and do not like to argue with their opinion it is not safe to let rats drink out of a water bowl, there has been a tragic case where a rat was at the vet and the vet let the rat drink out of a bowl. The rat inhaled some of the water and died because of it. It really is sad and I hope that you do not think that I am judging your decisions and you might even be lucky and nothing will even happen to your rats but I am just giving you a heads up. :)

Okay, story time! Last year I put my finger by the lid of the Rats cage, not expecting it to bite me (Idk) and it did (surprise surprise) yes it hurt... But now just a few months ago, I picked up a baby rattie and I fell in love... I kept him, and I loved him... He died last week due to a sickness he had(not sure what) but you could see he had breathing problems now that I look back... But I'm getting two Rats today.. I'm very excited... They're names are Lilo and Stitch and just me coming over my fear of Rats, just boggles me because I'm in love with these little creatures... RATS ARE THE BEST WOOHOO!!!!
