Why couldn't I be born into a family that loves animals as mich as I do...
@galacticgardevoir94962 жыл бұрын
I needed this so bad 😭 I had a lone female years ago; she was a special case (in the saddest way). The place I adopted her from wasn't very knowledgeable on rats and tried to introduce her and her sister to another pair of females by just throwing them in the already established cage. It resulted in a brutal fight, bad enough that her sister died. They nursed Daphne back to health and after a few failed attempts at introducing her to other rats, they decided they didn't want her (it was a school that kept a pretty big menagerie of animals so didnt have time to deal with her truama). So I got her when she was about about 18 months. She was a wonderful rat, and I loved her so much. We'd eat popcorn together on movie nights (she'd only get the soft bits) and she'd me out with me from the time I got home from school to the time I went to bed. She had a stroke one night while I was at work and I found her floundering on the ground. She died in my hands about and hour later and for 17 year old me it was truamatizing, so I wasn't at all ready to get another rat. Also, the cage she was in really wasn't adequate for her, let alone a pair of rats, so I decided to hold off. My partner and I decided it was time to get rats, and we got a pair of boys. They're 5 months and extremely skiddish, and having never had to have acclimated a rat to people, I've been really discouraged the last few days that I've really been trying, so this was really a great help for me :)

@Jewlz4ever I don't keep notifications on my KZbin, so I never saw this, but my boys were wonderful! Most of the boys I referenced are no longer with us, one of them passed away two years to the day that we got them 😢 he was my favorite, Pippin. He had just general decline from a pretty young age, about 20 months, and passed peacefully in his sleep at about 25 months. Then his brother Merry we lost to aggressive lung cancer about 2 months later. Moose, who never really bonded to us got super sick with micoplasma and after about a month of antibiotics and critical care he passed. So were down to just Goose, who had a leg amputated at about 8 months old but is going on 31 months and has lived a long and full life. We're suspecting heart disease, we treated him for micoplasma because he was wheezy but 3 weeks into treatment, he only sounds marginally better and I've heard early stage heart disease can present similarly to micoplasma, we're not planning anything drastic to drag him along, just letting him enjoy all the old-rat friendly snacks, naps on the couch with his dad, and getting upset when we take his stinky hammocks from him In brighter news though! We're transitioning to girls, hence why I returned to here. A breeder I've always wanted rats from is closing, so we jumped on getting two babies and ended up buying the mom of one of them. We'll be bringing them home in two weeks [the babies will be 5-5.5 weeks old :)]. It's sooner than I really wanted to jump into more rats, we wanted to wait till after we lost Goose, but we're hoping introducing him to the girls as playmates (not flatmates) might give him a new lease on life for his last few weeks. He's been alone since Merry passed in May so we're hoping some buddies will be good for him (worse case they stress him and he gets seperate time out from the girls)

Following a lot of tips from your videos I managed to get a very good cage set up for them and all the necessities they need. Less than an hour or so after arriving to their new home they were already exploring the cage and began zooming around playing with eachother. They have not seemed timid at all since then, they seem completely happy and comfortable, it hasn’t even been a full day and both were comfortable enough to climb into my hand when scattering food in their cage. I cant wait to slowly begin bonding with them!

They are so sweet and you gave some awesome advice. I use most the same ideas for bonding with my boys as well. I am a person who has had many rats over the last 4 years and many of my babies are straight from a feeder bin as there aren't as many breeders that are trustworthy where I am. Iv also gotten some babies from free adoption from pet stores and some from oops litters. But no matter where iv gotten my boys iv never had a problem bonding never been bit by a mean rat, and iv adopted older rats many times from feeder bins. I feel if you have patience and time it's all you need for a good start to bonding. Also asking to choose the baby from the bin helps, as I never go for color I just go for the friendliest baby lol. Anyway thanks for the video I love watching your video, also I'm all the way in Canada!!

I had great success giving my girls a shirt I'd worn for them to use as bedding(it will get chewed and shredded so make sure it's a safe fabric or sleep with a fleece scrap and give them that). Went from the grumpy lady running away from me handing her food and refusing to roam during free time to greeting me at the door within two days after weeks of no progress. She never enjoyed handling, but tolerated when I did need to pick her up for health checks and would regularly check in with me and groom me during free roam.

I got 2 new boys last week; ironically they look exactly like yours ^-^ I made the rookie mistake of buying my first three from a UK brand petstore (Wont name names, but we all know who), they got genders wrong, definitely aged wrong and claimed they were friendly but---- ( yeah I've owned them for over 7 months now and still cannot get them to trust me in the slightest) I've come to accept that they are just viewing babies, not cuddle bugs, but thats fine I love them regardless! This time having changed my mistakes and brought from a breeder, I'm blown away at how friendly they are! (I'm not used to kisses, only nips so it's a nice change of pace!) Ty for the video, it was super helpful!

I got three girls bit over a month ago and this video was very helpful. Despite being from a pet store one of them warm up to me in a week and the other two took a month.

I remember watching some Christmas movie where the kids had rats, and I managed to sweet talk my mum into getting me mice and rats. One of the two rats died over night, and the other one buried it. She and I bonded so quickly! She lived for up to 4 years, and she was the coolest wee thing! She literally stole my homework. She would also manage to escape her cage and go sleep with my mum! 😂 my favourite thing ever was when she’d get in my lap and lay on her back to let me run her belly. She was the best! ❤

They're so incredibly clever. And they obviously trust you. If they didn't you'd be lacerated after the nail-clipping thing. Nice

aahh this just reassures me that I raised my rat's babies right!! Had 2 sisters and the bigger of the two I decided to breed with a male that had a very sweet temperament! Got 13 babies and I love them all!! (wanted to have younger rats and to add 1-2 babies to their cage so that I could have 3 or 4). She was very defensive of her babies, but she was also a first time mom and would do things that necessarily was not the best option for her kit's so I had to keep an eye on her; (she started off by carrying them onto the highest platform, that had no edges so the blind babies would have crawled off, 1 did, but I was there to catch it and did things to prevent it. I couldn't separate the sisters though, because the smaller one got depressed if she was not with her and I had no-one else to join her... so I added a mesh on top of the bottom level to keep the mom there with the babies and build her burrows somewhere that they couldn't fall, but still have the siblings close to one another) I made sure to handle the babies a lot and give them encouragement when they got brave and curious! When they got older I somewhat frequently swapped cages and encouraged them to explore! (had 2 decent sized cages.) Exposed them to new smells constantly and made sure they weren't ever stressed! When they where ready to be given to good homes, it was so nice and heartwarming to hear how within the first day the babies had climbed out onto their new owners lap and also given kisses to their hands!! Made me happy to hear that, even if I was inexperienced w rats at the beginning I was able to raise them right!

I've gotten multiple rats from feeder bins and they are just as friendly as rats from a breeder, they just tend to be pretty scared/shy. If you let them do their own thing and don't try to handle them when they don't want to be handled, they usually come around in about a month or less, especially when they are housed with rats you've already bonded with because they learn from them

I FINALLY got my own mischief. I got three baby boys, Ratsputin was a true feeder rat and I think he lived his life in a drawer size bin. Remy, and NosfeRatu were pet store rats that were bred to sorta be pets but also feeders.

have only ever had feeder rats (only rats accessible to me) and i'm not sure if it's because i've gotten them so young or what, but they've always LOVED being handled/people generally. increasingly seeing that i've been very lucky in that regard.

my boys astro and obi love cuddling and being picked up, but my 3rd, benny isn't a huge fan unless he initiates it. he's super friendly and loves to be pet... as long as his feet don't leave the floor

Most of my rats came from pets at home and I don't no why but they bonded with me very very quickly all I did was handle them as soon as I got them home and have introduced them to my other girls (which they got on with each other pretty much straight away) so iv always been very lucky. Rats are just such incredible loving intelligent little creatures I miss having rats so much.
