Neil Tennant wrote this song in memory of a friend who had died of AIDS during the epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s. It is reflection on the transience of life and the need to be in the moment, hence ‘never being boring’. It’s sad beauty captures the sense of loss and regret that pervaded at that time, and still moves us now.

I came across a cache of old photos And invitations to teenage parties "Dress in white" one said, with quotations From someone's wife, a famous writer In the nineteen-twenties When you're young you find inspiration In anyone who's ever gone And opened up a closing door She said: "We were never feeling bored 'Cause we were never being boring We had too much time to find for ourselves And we were never being boring We dressed up and fought, then thought: "Make amends" And we were never holding back or worried that Time would come to an end" When I went I left from the station With a haversack and some trepidation Someone said: "If you're not careful You'll have nothing left and nothing to care for In the nineteen-seventies" But I sat back and looking forward My shoes were high and I had scored I'd bolted through a closing door I would never find myself feeling bored 'Cause we were never being boring We had too much time to find for ourselves And we were never being boring We dressed up and fought, then thought: "Make amends" And we were never holding back or worried that Time would come to an end We were always hoping that, looking back You could always rely on a friend Now I sit with different faces In rented rooms and foreign places All the people I was kissing Some are here and some are missing In the nineteen-nineties I never dreamt that I would get to be The creature that I always meant to be But I thought in spite of dreams You'd be sitting somewhere here with me 'Cause we were never being boring We had too much time to find for ourselves And we were never being boring We dressed up and fought, then thought: "Make amends" And we were never holding back or worried that Time would come to an end We were always hoping that, looking back You could always rely on a friend And we were never being boring We had too much time to find for ourselves And we were never being boring We dressed up and fought, then thought: "Make amends" And we were never being boring We were never being bored 'Cause we were never being boring We were never being bored....

Something in this rendition just brings out an even more wistful feeling in an already wistful and chillingly sad song. Utterly gorgeous.

I AGREE...THE SONG has kinda of a bittersweet feeling to it...and this version is even more "in the mood"...kindalike when you're 50, and you begin looking back at your past life, reminding the good times, and the bad times too,and then coming back to where you actually are now....i think it's gorgeous ,when a song inspires people like this one...

This Song was the Second Single From the Behavior Album from 1990. The First Single was So hard. Being boring is also One of my Favorite Songs from the Pet Shop Boys. Very good Piano Version of this Song. Greetings from Germany.

Absolutely superb. I've watched your "Being Boring" piano cover video countless dozens of times and I get goose-bumps every time. So jealous, I only wish I could play this well. The comment others have made about comparing your sound and style to relaxing in a classy lounge or hotel is perfectly apt. I've been a fan of Pet Shop Boys for decades, which is how I discovered this collection, but I enjoy your piano covers of "Winner" and "Your Funny Uncle" far more than the originals.

Am I right there's some out of chord bass on "in the nineteen twentieth"? Something like F/G G/G in your key. I don't hear it, I looked the chords up. So, not the bass moves beside the chord but the vice versa, the bass stands still and the chords change to resolve. Seems like one of their favorite harmony bit, they did the same in "Wouldn't normally do".

Great Version, but can it be that your piano needs some tuning in the higher range? Or are there phasing problems with the microphones?
