It could be argued when a musical group actually starts. Their career usually commences once they go professional. By that definition PSB were still considered an amateur formation, but in March/April of '85 came the turning point when they signed with Parlophone, hired a manager, Neil quit Smash Hits and the band went full time. The rest is history.

I think chris changed is image roughly around the early 90s, i think with the comments of him standing behind Neil, in the west End girls video. Gave him the idea of just standing there playing a few riffs, which he has kept to this very day. Neil has become more lively on stage.

Vince Clarke obviously had his own music influences and combined with Alison Moyets brilliant vocals, they set a trend, in their own right.

Seriously dude, these guys were late to the party. They jumped on a bandwagon. They followed a tried and trusted formula that started years earlier - one person on synths and one doing vocals. And a sequencer sat between them. Soft Cell and Blancmange both did it a year earlier. Vince Clarke the year before that. Go back to the 70's and you'll find a couple of New Yorkers called SUICIDE were making it an artform. Cabaret Voltaire were doing some very interesting things too

I have listened to Seymour, that became the succesful Blur, early songs by A-ha (pretty different), some early demos of The Stone Roses (they were always like a sunshine, even in their firsts attempts) and Jesus Jones, for example. Love to listen the difference between the start and the aftermath. It's beautiful.

Classic. I always get a kick out of this “live” performance/lip syncing/miming. And also remember the fashion in 1984- Neil wearing a button shirt untucked, collar up over a sweater; and Chris wearing a bright button down shirt with a sweater tied around the waist. the original version....I remember hearing the Bobby-O version (my fave,) but when I went to buy the record (in the states,) it was remade version, which very good and a classic but my dance-hall days went by the Bobby-O mix.
