We found this woodpecker when it was just a baby. It had fallen out of a tree. Over the next month we raised this bird and eventually it was able to fly. It would come back home for breakfast and for lunch. The rest of the time it was out in the wild. It kept coming back for about 2 weeks. We haven't seen it since. But I'm sure he has his own family now.

I used to take care of a baby woodpecker. I somehow taught it to fly by a miracle and one day it flew away. It still comes back once in a while and I leave some fruit out for it.😊🐦

you were successful and did well. Not too many hand fed birds survive after they are released because most people do not know how to raise them according to their species and know little on rehabilitating them back into the wild so they can survive on their own. Plus the people that raise them can never be true substitute for their parents, teaching them their particular songs and calls of their regions, and social habits and etc. the avian world is actually a lot more complicated than one thinks. ;-)

Looks like a baby northern flicker. They're easier to hand feed when they're fledglings.they trust a lot quicker. I've been feeding a red bellied woodpecker for the past year. If you have a handful of mealworms or peanuts it won't take long till theyre pecking at your back door at 6am.

Woodpeckers are noisy in several ways. Some species have real loud calls. In spring they search something to drum on, imagine the bird jackhammering some piece of thin sheet metal (like post cap). That can echo for a good kilometer or more.

Aww I had hand raised an infant starling from a freshly hatched baby to an adult. She had fallen out of herMomma's nest that was in the waves of my house. I couldn't put her back. When she got big enough, I'd take her outside and dig at the dirt with my fingers to stir up the bugs and she would go for them eagerly lol. Piglet, as she was named, was successfully reintroduced into the wild and I would see little flocks of Starlings everyday for the longest time eating the dog food that was left outside for my pit boxer, Trooper. See, the food that the Internet had told me to use for her was dog or cat food, I can't remember which, and applesauce. So, she taught the other Starlings that this stuff was edible and apparently awesome lol. It was very neat and very rewarding.

+Dessi Hall I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but unless you live in Europe, you shouldn't be caring for starlings. They are the most destructive invasive birds in North America and as far as I know, every state will let you take these birds at any time and in any way.

I have Redbellied woodpecker, that I call my boy. He brings his babies to feed in my trees & we chuk chuk chuk back & forth. I also have mourning doves that return every year, to my air conditioner, to have their broods. I call them my babies (but never interfere). My chickadees will handfeed, but I keep an open hand & never try to hold them. I do however call to them & all 'my' birds call to me for food, or as soon as they see me start chatting to me. 'My' robins sit at my kitchen window for their grapes. I recently saved an unknown olive green bird that hit my window. However, here on Long Island, you must contact a licensed rehabber. I would hope that anyone seeing her 'pet' will know who to contact to rehab an injured or orphaned bird. Wild birds, wild animals belong free in the wild. 🦋🦋🦋
