Peta Credlin calls for ‘weak’ PM to cut ties with the CFMEU

Sky News host Peta Credlin says the CFMEU put its Victorian branch into administration - but it's the “whole apple that's rotten”.
Reports in the AFR, the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, and on TV, have exposed allegations of kickbacks, threats, extortion, and extensive links between the CFMEU and major crime figures.
“In the 1980's, the Hawke government de-registered the BLF, the CFMEU's corrupt and thuggish predecessor," Ms Credlin said.
“Will the Albanese government have similar courage? Let's see what our weak Prime Minister does next.”

I was a member from about 2001 to 2005 myself, always been shifty in my opinion but think of how many Governments have allowed this corruption to fester, how many kickbacks received in order for them to turn a blind eye on both sides of the aisle?

I was a member of the CFMEU and resigned after 4 years as I got sick of all their rules and regulations I didn't agree with. I concentrated on domestic work and stayed away from the big CFMEU building sites as they were getting ridiculous. Best move I ever made but it doesn't mean I was in on any of their shenanigans.

Norm Gallagher was a dog, he cost me a job back in 1986. I had a BWIU ticket and was sent to a BLF site on a friday before the builders picnic on the monday. When they saw my ticket it was "everybody out, down your tools". My boss had to pay all the sites wages (20 blokes) for the friday and monday and a month later I got canned for pretty much no reason. Other than the fact one of the bosses up the chain had to cover his arse and needed a fall guy. I was just a tradey, I complained to the BWIU but they were just toothless tigers and did nothing. No Gallagher was just as bad.

It's been going on for decades, including agreeing to extraordinary EBA terms in order to be able to work on sites, pay up or no work. Once the CFMEU gets one contractor to agree to the EBA, then they bribe other contractors to conform likewise or leave. They will use 'safety' as an issue, to stop work or get you off a site even if the safety matter is so minor that it can be immediately rectified. It's a tactic they use - and you don't need to ask me how I know. THE CFMEU have pressured folks to shut down a site like 'straight away' without going through proper process which resulted workers stuck in elevators, lifts because power was switched off. It operates on the basis 'it's their way or the highway'.

Why I left the Union in 2005, just working as a contracter on Union sites and got sick of all the red tape. Found a boss who concentrated on domestic work only and was much happier. Building Industry is now overrun by low skilled imported minorities who undercut you at every turn because they cut corners. I left the industry in 2009, too much drama.

The Queensland Premier, Giggles Miles just gave his mates in the CFMEU a 50 percent pay increase and an extra months leave a year PLUS if it FEELS like 38 degrees which is every day in the last Queensland summer they don't have to go to work. Most days didn't go over 34 but some boffin says these days it feels like?? Cost of all the large government projects with all their brand new CFMEU flags all flapping in the breeze will go through the roof. Interest rates are sure to go up with all the pork barreling going on by Miles.

Not exactly related. CMFEU is infrastructure, industrial and commercial projects. Resdiential buildings are usually non-union developers (not all but a good chunk). The housing market issue belongs to all the politicians who have majority of their personal, undeclared portfolios in real estate.

Sad thing is that though they'll certainly be a slight improvement, Coalition won't be a whole lot better. But it was the current ALP federal government that got rid of the ABCC at the insistence of the CFMEU. And it's the ALP which has benefited from CFMEU money, and its support for its anti-democratic, deceitful, divisive Voice. A really great book on union corruption is Morton & Robinson's: Shotgun & Standover, about what happened inside the Painters and Dockers union and why it took so long for the Hawke ALP government to do anything about it. This CFMEU behaviour has been going on for many, many years. I'm suspicious on the reason it's NOW in the spotlight and I'm sceptical anything will really change.
