After trying for years to expand their family, Peta Murgatroyd and Maksim Chmerkovskiy are sharing the difficulties they've been facing. In this exclusive interview, the 'Dancing with the Stars' pro opens up about suffering three miscarriages since 2020, all while husband Maks was away, and shares that she's now begun in-vitro fertilization. Though the journey has been tough, the couple reveals they are stronger than ever, and Peta hopes that sharing her journey will inspire others to feel less alone: "Allowing myself to tell my story to help even one individual who may be feeling a little ashamed, a little embarrassed, about their situation.... I feel like this has done its job."

The beginning of this video is so important. No matter how much you think you may “know” a celebrity, you simply just DON’T. And it’s why it is so important to lead with kindness and compassion.

I can’t understand why people think it’s ok to ask the baby/pregnancy timeline question. IT IS NOT OK. In this day and age, MANY women have fertility issues and you just don’t know who, or how it is affecting them, what effect your question can have on somebody going through infertility. I wanted to scream every time people asked me or told me to have a second baby!!! It took me 8 years to get pregnant with my one and only, and it just never happened again! Did I wanted to?? YES! could I???? NO! Please!!! STOP ASKING THOSE QUESTIONS!!!

Love these two....so, so sad that they're having to go through all of this. Peta is such a warrior and for her to be able to share this journey with us and ultimately with those who need to know they're not alone in their journeys is a beautiful gift. Of course, this is happening to Maks also, in its own way, and they're truly blessed to have such a loving and supportive life with each other. 😍🙏

Peta we had trouble conceiving and we decided to adopt … This was back in the sixties I totally forgot about even trying to get pregnant… When we went to adopt we signed papers for a baby boy … On our way home I was sick I found out later I was pregnant I truly believe it’s clearly a mental issue too ….I went on to have six children and each one is a miracle …It will happen I wish you all the best 🥰😍😘

I lost a baby last year & I always find myself thinking "I would have an infant right now if things had been different." My 4 year old begs for a sibling almost daily. Everytime she asks for a brother or asks why I haven't had another baby, it's like a little dagger to my heart. Same thing when strangers ask why I only have 1. I completely understand, Peta. You never know what other women have been through. ❤️

I LOVE THEM! Since the very 1st DWTS, I've loved them. Peta, THANK YOU for sharing your journey. I, too, experience a miscarriage at the end of my 5th month, so I totally know how you feel. THANK YOU Maks for loving and supporting her. Fathers need support too, so please take time for yourself. You both are AMAZING and you are in my prayers! Shai is SO ADORABLE. Can't wait to see him on the dance floor.🤩

Thank you for sharing Peta! I know it’s hard. My husband and I had several miscarriages and 4.5 yeas of infertility before we got pregnant with our double rainbow baby via IVF. It’s a tough road, but hang in there. If it’s God’s will and timing, it will happen!

I am so very Peta had to go through all of this and especially on her own, alone and afraid. We as women have to start taking control of our bodies and speak out and up for help. We should not have to suffer in silence or beg for help and answers. I wish her and Max only the very best. And a new little one, too.

I relate so much to everything Peta said. I had 4 miscarriages and told myself often If I have more miscarriages I'm having my tubes tied. Then I got pregnant 5 months after losing my brother and 4 weeks into the pregnancy I bled and told myself this is it. But like Peta said it's common to bleed and it was old blood releasing from my placenta. In April of 2023 I had my first and only child. I can never go through the stress again. I've reached my limit. But I have my precious little beast of a toddler and am so happy. Many don't talk about miscarriages or the struggle and mental health struggle it comes with. Be gentle with those who've been through it. ❤

Peta, so sad to hear what you have gone through. I was diagnosed with classic PCOS back in 1985. I had every symptom of PCOS. It’s a horrible syndrome to have inherited. Mentally and emotionally it’s tough to deal with and physically of course. It sounds like IVF will be the answer for you to have everything closely monitored. Best of luck and good wishes being sent your way for a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby to soon be in your arms. ❤️

To Sharon, I know exactly what you mean. I was 14 and wondering why I had this and none of my friends did. It only got worse as the years went on. I know two other women with it that I met when I was in my 30’s. Depression goes along with it with all of us. All the covering up about it. The shame when it’s not our fault.

Having lost a baby also then being diagnosed with PCOS, I understand what Peta went through. I can’t imagine having 3 miscarriages though. After I lost mine, I thought I could go back to work but I just couldn’t. I was depressed for a long while, understandably. I also took shots to get pregnant again & after 6 years we finally had another baby. After that, I decided I wasn’t going to worry about getting pregnant again & if it happened, great. It did, twice. I wish the best for anyone in this tough situation. You are not alone.

My heart hurt during PETA’s story. I lost 5 babies due to miscarriages. I had people tell me I was never meant to have a baby and to “get over it and move on”. I today have a son in the military as a Major and a pilot… and heading down tomorrow to be there my second grandchild!!! We all have our threshold and may decide when to not go through another pregnancy, but if someone decides to keep trying, it is their choice as a couple. Be kind to each other, we are all going through hidden things. Be that person that gives someone a little support with a smile!

Thank you so much for sharing your story. This is something that is simply not spoken about and it is so deeply painful and multi-faceted! I have had three miscarriages and a 12 year journey and we stopped because it is too much … I will never be a mother and it has been a very lonely road filled with shame and so forth. However, I am thankful for every day and I am so glad that time has softened my pain. Don’t get me wrong, it’s something that I will always have sadness about. Anyhow! I feel for all the people out there that have suffered through such difficult experiences and loss. And thank you to Peta for sharing because it has helped me and I am sure many others, as well. It truly is helpful for others to “see” you and hear you. On Mother’s Day each year, my best friend tells me that she sees me … and that means the world. Many blessings to Peta and Max on their journey and to everyone out there 💗

We had three losses, but was one 1st trimester miscarriage, one ectopic pregnancy which ruptured and the worst, a stillborn son at 30 weeks. Without any fertility help, we did manage to have 5 healthy children, ending with surprise twins when we tried for baby #4. Then my husband died when our twins were just 6 yrs old. I thought after our losses, I could then handle anything. Boy did life test that. Some losses are just too big to heal from.

Thank you for sharing your story. You’re very brave and strong. I recently saw you just had your 3 rd child. Congratulations. I think when you lose children it makes having a healthy one is just a bit sweeter after the loses you have gone thru. I too have lost 4 babies. I’m also very blessed to have 4 children now. They are my life. I believe that the lord has given me the gift of knowing I will spend eternity rocking my four babies. I cannot wait to meet them some day. They are always with me as yours are with you. I’m so happy you have your children now and hope the lord comforts your hearts as you remember those you lost. You will be with them one day. Bless you both.

You have a beautiful family!! I am 62 years old and I have been married for 41 years. During my child bearing years I had 5 miscarriages. We had our 2 sons with no problems. Then over the next 8 1/2 years I had 4 miscarriages before giving birth to our only daughter. When our oldest son was 19, our second son was 17, and our daughter was 9, I had my 5th miscarriage.. Fast forward to present day. Our second son's wife has PCOS and endometriosis. They know all too well the struggles of getting pregnant and having miscarriages. It took them 6 years to get their first son, and he is now 8 years old. And just a week ago, their 2nd son, a true miracle baby entered the world 5 weeks early. He is 5 pounds of pure tiny perfection!! He didn't even spend one day in the NICU!! He spent one night under the bilirubin lights for jaundice. But he was released from the hospital 2 days after being born. Another miracle was that he came from her most damaged ovary, that had a chunk taken out of it during a previous surgery. The doctors said that, that ovary would not ovulate on a regular basis, and that it only had a 10% chance of releasing good eggs from that ovary!! And lo and behold, that is the ovary that produced our tiny miracle!! Our entire extended family literally prayed him here. We have been praying for them to have another baby for years!! Our prayers for years went something like this: "Dear Heavenly Father, if it will be thy will, can Ryan & Jenny please have another child. And can JJ please have a sibling. Ryan & Jenny are great parents, and we know that JJ would be such a great big brother. But thy will be done!!" Heavenly Father hears and answers our prayers. And ours were answered a week ago. Don't give up!! I do believe you will have another child. And I totally agree with you. Our husbands are in this with us. And when we experience loss, they are experiencing loss, and grief and sadness too!! The difference is that they are trying to be strong for us because we as women, are the ones who are going through the physical part of it. Sending prayers for your cute family!! I have been a fan of DWTS for years!! I love everything that you are doing for Ukraine!! ❤️🙏

So very sad. 😔 I completely empathize having also experienced these circumstances. I must say, though .... I'm skeptical regarding one thing~ It almost seems it was a coverup when stating "I tested negative to get on a plane." Why would no one be able to come help Peta at home if she'd tested negative for Covid ? I experienced Covid, and on the 7th day, I tested negative. Once negative, I also had severe cold symptoms and complete fatigue. Having tested negative, though, people could then be in the vicinity to assist if necessary. So it really makes zero sense that Peta says no one could come in to help her at home. I feel quite sad for ALL they have experienced with miscarriages and the virus. May God bring comfort and healing.🙏🏽

Struggling to have a baby is a miserable journey. When I went through it, there was very little information. I was never given a clear diagnosis. No piece of paper. I’m lucky to be very fertile. Got pregnant with our son & daughter both on the first try. In between, I had an anembryotic pregnancy and needed a d&c -my body didn’t miscarry on it’s own. I didn’t want to do it again, I said I was done but after 4 months I knew I wanted one more. My husband and I are both sterile now.

People should mind their own business about family size, especially when it’s couched in terms of when and not if. We don’t know anybody’s situation. And why is it wrong to only have one kid or to have none at all? Yes, asking if they want more kids is fine because no assumptions, but everything else, no. Also, fertility doesn’t necessarily have to do anything with the rest of your health profile. Also, if there are several miscarriages in a row, someone should see a healthcare provider for further testing if they want to try again to see if there are genetic or other factors.

ANYONE judging what they think others should be doing need to just stop. Even public figures don't, nor should be expected to, share every detail of their lives. We don't know what's happening. Having said that, miscarriages are the 2nd worst experience, short only of stillbirth or death of a child at any age. And frankly there's not a lot of distance between miscarriages and stillbirth. I know. I've experienced both. I appreciate their, especially Peta's willingness and bravery to talk about reproduction health. Especially now. It's never an easy topic. So many women feel shame, as she said she did. Or feel they have failed in some way. I know I did. So hopefully by more people being able and willing to talk about their experiences, all women will hopefully understand it's NOT THEM. As in its not something they chose. They also aren't in some tiny percentile of "failure" in a world full of perfect pregnancies. That percentage is much larger than anyone believes.

How heartbreaking for this family! There is no shame, or blame in miscarriage, except that which belongs to the unkind people who project their reproductive choices onto others. Stop doing this! PERIOD
