Truly curious about this lens. I currently have a 35mm 1.8 and absolutely love it. Was about to pull the trigger on the 50mm 1.8 but now I’m second guessing. The idea of a pancake in a pocket sounds nice as long as it’s sharp at 2 or 2.8 since I mostly shoot there anyway.

You make a best Z-mount lenses list without including the Z105/2.8 macro?! It's an absolutely FANTASTIC lens. The Tamron Z 35-150 2/2.8 is a lens that I agree with Jordan on, and enthusiastically recommend. It is truly a Swiss Army knife of an optical tool...it does everything...and does it exquisitely. My primary working kit has been greatly reduced and now includes just the Nikkor Z 14-24 2.8 (the definition of a perfect wide angle lens), Tamron 35-150, the 26 2.8 (for walkaround/street), the Z 50 1.8 (no brainer) and the old F-mount Sigma 100-400 w/FTZ for occasional telephoto needs; its performance is really surprising on the Z8. But, 90% of the time, the 35-150 is what is locked on to my camera. It's really that great.
@mcandelacom
@mcandelacom 6 күн бұрын
I am actually interested in the Tamron 35-150mm but my only issue is the weight. I would need to wait a few years for Tamron to release a lighter new version... Unlike Chris, I would be more interested in a prime 35mm than a 50mm. I heard the Sony version is quite amazing though
@AbbeyRoadDuluth

Nikon's 50mm lenses especially are just amazing for focus stacking of product & scale models in studio because they don't focus breathe, be it the 1.2S or 1.8S. You won't get too much ghosting that requires manual editing because each individual frame align very well in the stacking process. These lenses were exactly the reason why I bought into the Z mount. RF and E mount lenses don't exactly meet my requirements in this regard.

In my opinion, the best lenses are the 24-120mm f/4, 24-200mm f/4-6.3, and 28-400mm f/4-8. I am tired of bokeh, corner sharpness, or pristine noiseless images. I'd rather have the lens to capture the decisive moment and not caught off guard changing lenses. I only use prime lenses on the second body.

I chose the 14-24mm f/2.8 over the 14-30mm f/4 because I wanted to have it for astro as well. It is much lighter than you'd expect and a joy to shoot with. It is more limited in focal length which means changing lenses if I want to go above 24. Happy with that choice. I chose the 100-400mm over the 70-200mm f/2.8 as I get more range if slightly less optical quality. Still happy with my choice on that. I bought the 24-200mm before the 24-120mm was out. Question for you guys: given that different mounts vary in diameter, does this present any (theoretical) limits or benefits for certain focal lengths? I have a Nikon and notice the Z mount is physically quite large, adapting my M mount lenses I notice what a big difference there is. I suspect this may be related to why many of the Z mount lenses tend to be larger, but imagine there would be some possible benefits to that (other than being able to adopt the smaller mounts). The other measure I’ve wondered about similarly is flange distance. Thanks!

Hi Chris, I love your videos and have followed you and Jordan for a few years. Thank you for all the reviews you do. I recently sold my D5500 and D7200 with all the f mount lenses to upgrade to the Z50 and Z6ii bodies. Z50 for travel is awesome. I chose the Tamron Nikon branded Z trio for the Z6ii because of the f2.8 affordable pricing along with a 1.4xTC for the 70-180 f2.8. I then added the 24-120 f4S lens after seeing the reviews and I agree with you, it’s the best walk around lens due to the extra reach and image quality. But then I saw the Z180-600 and that is a must for any armature for wildlife and will also works great with the 1.4xTC. With this setup I can pack the trio plus TC in my compact camera backpack with the 24-120 mounted on the body and bring along the 180-600 in the Ape Case I purchased for it. Only 2 bags and a tripod and I’m covered. Thanks again and keep those videos coming. Dave Drake Coldstream BC

How would y’all rank each manufacturers lens lineup as a whole and what do you think they still need to work on? Is there any manufacturer you would highly recommend over another because of their lenses (i.e maybe higher consideration for Nikon as a wildlife suite because of the compact telephoto primes). Would be interested in hearing y’all’s takes for both personal use and a more generalized approach.

Thank you! Starting out fresh with a new mirrorless and am always keen to hear recommendations, although I will note that you missed macro lenses! Can we do a roundup? Macro is very much my jam, and as far as I can tell there aren't many for Nikon Z, but maybe you guys are more knowledgeable?

For wildlife primes I've found I really like the 400 f4.5 + 1.4 tc. It gets you to 560mm f6.3 which is very close to the Nikkor 600 f6.3 at about a $700 discount with the additional benefit of enjoying 2 different focal lengths.

I (very) recently completed my (flight) travel combo with the 14-30mm/f4 and the 28-400mm/f4-8. I liked the 24-70mm/f4 but compared to the 24-120mm/f4 it's missing some range for an 'always on' lense. So I switched to this for hiking and similar situations. I'm missing a few of the 3rd party goodies like the Viltrox 16mm/f1.8. It was said that APS/C is out of scope but the 13mm/f1.4 was one of my choices for the Z50 too.

If I had Nikon Z mount and wanted the best Lenses, then I would go for Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0, Voigtländer Nokton 50mm 1.0, Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm 2.0, Voigtländer Nokton 75mm 1.5, Nikon Z 400mm 4.5 and Nikon Z 800mm 6.3 (or Nikon 600mm 6.3).

I'm with you 100%. The 24-120 is fantastic for everything including macro photography. I take photos at a step back distance with the 120mm and with the Z7 sensor cropped in. Everything is in focus without focus stacking and it looks like macro photography, because I was farther away. An incredible lens and still a fantastic sensor. I use the 14-30 all the time as well.

I still hope to get a 15-35 lens that takes filters. With the 24 I do not have enough range and it does not take polarizing filters with usual 100mm systems and the 14-30 is only f/4. Somehow it is always a compromise. The UWA lenses by Canon are the only thing I miss these days shooting Nikon again. But therefore I get the 180-600 and the 24-120 as well, awesome lenses.

Of my 11 Z lenses, the 24-120mm is my favorite, so impressed with its IQ. I typically leave the 24-70mm 2.8 & 70-200mm 2.8 at home. Leaving for an Alaskan trip and will take the 14-30mm, 24-120mm and 180-600mm with my 1.4 tele. And one of my primes, either the 20mm, 35mm or 50mm 1.8. Not sure?

I picked up a 24-120mm f/4 and my oh my it's beautiful. I always have it on my camera and walk with my 85mm f/1.8 f-mount and ftz adoptor. I will eventually get both the 85mm f/1.2 and the 135mm f/1.8.

24-120 f/4 is pretty much the reason I upgraded to the Z-mount - sharp, light n compact, reasonably bright and far superior to its F-mount counter part. Has ~0.4x magnification at the long end to boot. I only wish Nikon someday will make something like a 20-120 f/4 with similar optical quality!

Great video! Nikon has done an amazing job in creating a versatile and very high quality lens line-this is why I end up suggesting the Nikon line to friends even though I'm a strong Fuji supporter and user (I was a Nikon guy back in the film days). Who knows, maybe I will switch back at some point, if they ever decide to re-release a retro S series style rangefinder. But I won't hold my breath.

I shoot with the Z14-24mm f/2.8 S, Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S, Z 70-200mm F/2.8 S, and Z100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 S. If I need to go beyond 400mm, I use the Z TC1.4, which I cannot see any loss in sharpeness at 560mm. I use the lenses on both a Z7II and Z8, which are excellent camera bodies.

As a portrait shooter I have some lenses some lenses in this list and I can tell you they are all fantastic lenses. The 50,85 1.2 primes and the 24-70 2.8s and 70-200 2.8 S zooms. Nikon has done great job here.Butbwhat I found fascinating is that I prefer the tamron 35-150 and viltrox 16mm to my 24-70 and 70-200 combo. Right now I shoot events with the tamron.
