The Tamron Z 35-150 2/2.8 is a lens that I agree with Jordan on, and enthusiastically recommend. It is truly a Swiss Army knife of an optical tool...it does everything...and does it exquisitely. My primary working kit has been greatly reduced and now includes just the Nikkor Z 14-24 2.8 (the definition of a perfect wide angle lens), Tamron 35-150, the 26 2.8 (for walkaround/street), the Z 50 1.8 (no brainer) and the old F-mount Sigma 100-400 w/FTZ for occasional telephoto needs; its performance is really surprising on the Z8. But, 90% of the time, the 35-150 is what is locked on to my camera. It's really that great.

I am actually interested in the Tamron 35-150mm but my only issue is the weight. I would need to wait a few years for Tamron to release a lighter new version... Unlike Chris, I would be more interested in a prime 35mm than a 50mm. I heard the Sony version is quite amazing though

Nikon's 50mm lenses especially are just amazing for focus stacking of product & scale models in studio because they don't focus breathe, be it the 1.2S or 1.8S. You won't get too much ghosting that requires manual editing because each individual frame align very well in the stacking process. These lenses were exactly the reason why I bought into the Z mount. Of course, the IRIX is MF only, but the deep focus throw allows for ultra-precise focusing.

I chose the 14-24mm f/2.8 over the 14-30mm f/4 because I wanted to have it for astro as well. It is much lighter than you'd expect and a joy to shoot with. It is more limited in focal length which means changing lenses if I want to go above 24. Happy with that choice. I chose the 100-400mm over the 70-200mm f/2.8 as I get more range if slightly less optical quality. Still happy with my choice on that. I bought the 24-200mm before the 24-120mm was out. The colour capture on my z 8 brings a completely unique and pleasing image. That said the adapter for the Sony to z mount has been a problem . Soft wear updates are a risky. I have the z 85 f 1.8 and it’s good sharper at certain f stops than the 1.2f . Really depends on the look you want . Please note so many people coming into photography concentrate on their equipment. The image quality is of course a factor .The mistake they make is that the pro equipment is what makes their photos great. The truth is far from that. You can take a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. I enjoy your channel . Thanks hope my little explanation is worth the read . I have purchased 3 adapters so buyer be ware . I use the 24-70 f4 and 24-200 on my z7ii plus the 50mm f1.8. On my z6ii I have the 40mm f2 se and 28mm f2.8 se plus the TT artisans 75mm f2 for occasional reach. The street primes are excellent and give a certain look you don’t get from many modern lenses.

I have several higher quality S lenses, but the lens I use the most now is the non-S 24-200. Incredibly versatile for a walk-around lens and I rarely need to swap lenses, except sometimes to a wider one. It doesnt have a wide aperture, but these days you can use a higher ISO and a bit of noise reduction in low-light situations. My next lens will be the 105mm macro and portrait lens. Additionally, some of my old F lenses work great with the FTZ adapter.

I shoot with the Z14-24mm f/2.8 S, Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S, Z 70-200mm F/2.8 S, and Z100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 S. If I need to go beyond 400mm, I use the Z TC1.4, which I cannot see any loss in sharpeness at 560mm. I use the lenses on both a Z7II and Z8, which are excellent camera bodies.

I still hope to get a 15-35 lens that takes filters. With the 24 I do not have enough range and it does not take polarizing filters with usual 100mm systems and the 14-30 is only f/4. Somehow it is always a compromise. The UWA lenses by Canon are the only thing I miss these days shooting Nikon again. But therefore I get the 180-600 and the 24-120 as well, awesome lenses.

I encourage everybody to look into the 24-200 f4-6.3 lens. I've been using it for a couple weeks and it rarely leaves the camera body. Affordable too

Just spent 3 months in Africa doing wildlife photography and the 100-400 was pretty much permanently on my camera. It's a great lens especially with the high megapixel sensors which you can crop a fair bit and still have a usable image.

I would take a Z8 with 24-120 f/4 if I would have to pick only one body and lens. I mean the Z8 is just sooo sweet and 24-120 is really great and able to do good close up also. But in general, Nikon did a great job 💪

When I came over to the Nikon side this year I got the 24-120mm and 180-600mm to start off as I mostly shoot outdoor. The 24-1200mm I can tell is going to be my fav so far. Now I want something that can bring in more light. I am very much thinking the 14-24mm 2.8f will be my next lens.
@alsimoncelli73137 ай бұрын
Of my 11 Z lenses, the 24-120mm is my favorite, so impressed with its IQ. I typically leave the 24-70mm 2.8 & 70-200mm 2.8 at home. Leaving for an Alaskan trip and will take the 14-30mm, 24-120mm and 180-600mm with my 1.4 tele. And one of my primes, either the 20mm, 35mm or 50mm 1.8. Not sure?

Great commentary on the superb Nikon Z System lenses, Chris! I agree with the majority of your assessments, except that I find the 14-30 f/4 to be better for my landscape work, being IMHO, 99% as sharp as the 14-24 f/2.8. Plus, when retracted with hood reversed, it fits "lens down" in my Shimoda 30L Explore backpack mounted on a Z7, something the 14-24 wound not do..

I (very) recently completed my (flight) travel combo with the 14-30mm/f4 and the 28-400mm/f4-8. I liked the 24-70mm/f4 but compared to the 24-120mm/f4 it's missing some range for an 'always on' lense. So I switched to this for hiking and similar situations. I'm missing a few of the 3rd party goodies like the Viltrox 16mm/f1.8. It was said that APS/C is out of scope but the 13mm/f1.4 was one of my choices for the Z50 too.

I own some of the items mentioned and find the brief, snappy reviews credible and helpful, even if likely paid-for. What puzzles me is the often loose relationships among lens physical sizes, focal lengths, maximum apertures -and in some instances, prices. But that's an entirely different video. Thanks for producing and posting.

Argh this is so tough. I want to get into taking event photos but I still don't know what lens to go to. The 24-120 F4 seems like the most versatile option but the newer Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 is also intriguing. Both are around the same price too. Or maybe I get a used 24-70mm F/4 for cheap and use the extra money towards a 2nd lens? What would you guys do?
@seanmolincreative6 ай бұрын
I shoot a LOT of event work, and I tend to just run two bodies with a normal wide on one and a normal telephoto on the other. I end up using the wide the vast majority of the time. And I find that you often don't have control over your lighting (aside from flash depending on the event) so it pays to have that extra aperture to use. I almost always reach for primes and tend to find a fast 24 to 35 is king. From what you mentioned, the 28-75 f/2.8 is hands-down THE lens I'd get for events if you only had one lens and didn't want to force yourself to a prime. The nice thing about events is that you virtually always have a lot of ability to zoom with your feet, so don't be too scared with a prime. You want wide because you're often in close quarters, but if you are too wide, just get closer. If you are too close, step back a bit. Bottom line: I wouldn't use anything slower than f/2.8 if I'm doing event work. Prioritize the wide side of things. But ultimately if you take it seriously you're going to want options no matter what. I know plenty of people who do this for a living using the 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8 and never ever ever want for anything else.

@@seanmolincreative Sorry for the late reply Sean, this is really helpful and I appreciate reading your experience on how you shoot events. I definitely think the f/4 lenses are now off the table for me and I'll start thinking about my different lens option around primes and f/2.8 zooms. Thanks again Sean!

You are right with every lens you mention but to me it‘s a typical choice from KZbinrs like you who have unlimited access to all these expensive lenses without buying them. There are lots of people out there who can afford the 24-70 f/4 (which you mentioned) and one prime lens. And my recommendation is always the 40mm f/2 and the 28m f/2.8. Both are not the sharpest lenses in the world but they have a certain look, they are light weight and don’t cost a fortune. I use them often on my Z8. It‘s a great combo for street photography.

I use the z8 along with the z14-30 the z24-120 the z70-200 and z180-600. My primes are the z40 the z85 the z 105 and get this the Samyang 135 with the Sony 10:59 convertor ( that’s the latest version) I also have a sigma 35 DG art, I use for film more than photography. I also use the Z7.2 ……. All those Nikon lenses produced wonderful images . The 180-600 z can be super sharp but at closer distances than used on the father away stuff . Footnotes ….. the lenses can be enhanced in light-room. Bokeh wish with its new blur function. However my favourite photos come from the 135 . So would I be better moving on the Samyang Sony mount and getting the z version. I do like the Samyang but I use a coveter for Sony to Nikon this has taken three attempts to purchase a song to Nikon body adapter (bummer . ) The Samyang I think is great but it’s the up grade s on the adapter I blow my first adapter trying to up load firm wear . It that too was a nightmare event! The real worry is in the field when I change lenses . The question is how sharp is the more expensive 135 z ? The film is ok on the sigma and the 35 mm is covered on the 24-120 mm which is my favourite and most often used in scouting trips. All this said I learned my craft at a local wild life lodge it’s only a mile walk around . Two things it was great for one if I took a photo and later thought I should have tried a 10:59 different approach I was able to go back and retake it. I learned the important bits about the use of my gear and when I forgot something I could nip home and get . I learned to check my bag and camera to make sure I hag not forgotten anything and had a checklist. The best part of learning is in the doing . Yes I have great stuff but I can go anywhere now I have learned to use it. Spend your money on lenses they out live the camera body . My z 7 2 does not get much use its now my back up . My lenses now they are all competent and make me think which one I want to use . Love your stuff you have been very helpful and honest I respect that cheers my points lenses out live bodies and if you can’t get great photo locally then don’t pay to travel . You won’t get them that way either .

How would y’all rank each manufacturers lens lineup as a whole and what do you think they still need to work on? Is there any manufacturer you would highly recommend over another because of their lenses (i.e maybe higher consideration for Nikon as a wildlife suite because of the compact telephoto primes). Would be interested in hearing y’all’s takes for both personal use and a more generalized approach.

The 24-120 f4 has been my favourite lens I've used/owned across 8 years and 3 systems, aside from the Voigtländer 40mm f1.2 which is a very different type of lens. It's just that great. I really wish Nikon had more low profile, pancake-adjacent lenses since that's what had me leaving the system again. Fuji and MFT just offer more choice in terms of size and form factor.
