Thanks Chris mate, really nice to see you appreciate the relevance of M43 and in essence the beauty of all formats, the Leica partnership in particular. How great can it be that we can have such a wide range of lenses in partnership with such. Great times, it's hard to go wrong, let's explore our creativity!
Mine are: Leica 15mm Leica 42.5mm LUMIX 35-100 - the reason why MFT is so good. Great focal range in a small body.

I was almost certain for the pp-podcast's sponsorship with omds you would pick the 12-100mm as if it has been manufactured by God(that's how they've been promoting this lens.. calling it Kami-Lens..) and I'm glad I was wrong.
@nthc_iq8x374Күн бұрын
btw imho their worst mistake on promoting M4/3 was not emphasizing the "numbers" of "Equivalent Focal Length" enough(like calling them based on the equivalencies and such). n' especially for Zoom lenses, this is more apparent when we consider how wider angled zooms appear less impactful on paper.
@nthc_iq8x374Күн бұрын
good example is 7-14mm (or 8-18mm) and even 12-35mm covers rather substantial ranges being a conventional 24-70mm lens. How they didn't realize normal people pay money by their concept of product value and definitely the absolute numbers a zoom lens covers impact very significantly how we assess values of the lenses in our mind. We don't always take pictures by numbers but when it comes purchasing.. and the promotions, some choices can spoil the product values significantly.
@nthc_iq8x374Күн бұрын
I'm serious on the above comments except the equivalency on maximum magnification ratio isn't and never was a thing.. so I'm still waiting for the ultimate macro lens shootout from some other sites who receive no sponsorships from lens makers.

Imagine it didn't occur to Jordan - would you say, "It occurs to I that..."? No? You'd say, "It occurs to me that..." That's the simple rule. #EnglishGrammar101 Other than that, an interesting video.

For the price Panasonic is demanding there's no point to get this over the X100vi other than you simply cannot do a waitlist.

Thanks for this (long overdue) analysis of lenses in the micro four thirds system. It is a great system because of the incredible quality that both Olympus and Panasonic (through their Leica partnership) bring to the table. The Panasonic 20mm f1.7 pancake is my choice for a normal lens mostly because it is so small, I can always toss it in to the camera bag. I am going to check out the Olympus 20mm, as I was unaware of it. The Olympus 75mm was my "go to" lens for many years, but for the last few years, the Panasonic Leica 50-200mm has been my "go to". Its a great range, fast enough, and takes beautiful pictures.

Hi,the best thing about the video by far was the game of touching shoulders, knees, ass, feet, etc. I think next year you should have a gymnastics competition and whoever loses has to drink. I found it a bit disappointing that the best cameras of the year only featured cameras that were clearly designed for the professional sector. You should have established two categories and not just one. The same can be said in the lenses category. For example, Viltrox has released a number of lenses this year at a very competitive price that can rub shoulders with and even surpass the best lenses from Sigma and Sony. It feels like you didn't go to great lengths to make this video and that you opted for the most obvious products. I honestly think you have a lot to improve in this type of videos and while it is true that you have your touch of grace, one expects something more from a video of these characteristics. Finally, I wish the PetaPixel team all the best for the coming year!

Thanks guys for an excellent review of the benefits one gets with the m43 system gear. Years ago, I switched from Nikon to Olympus and now OM-1. I am a retired scientist, and my passion is wildlife photography with the OM-1ii and pro lenses (esp. the 150-400 1.25x and 40-150mm f/2.8). One lens not on your reviewed list is the 14-150mm f/4-5.6 mark ii. It is an excellent multipurpose, close focusing and pocketable. It is great for walkabouts and travel - especially when carrying the telephoto lenses.

As this is already the 11th, it would be interesting if you guys would revisit your choices made a decade earlier that in hindsight how you guys were on point or maybe something flew under the radar but should have been included... Also I know it was touched on in the podcast but I liked the best and worst trends categories of the past as well

Good information but way way way way way too much talking head stuff. You are talking about a camera system so you should have many many many many many shots to cut away to instead of keeping your face on a camera for so much time

As an old guy only a few months short of 70...thank you for giving props to the MFT format. I was a Canon FF user for decades but noticed that my walkabouts getting shorter due to the weight of what I would carry. I discovered the OM-5 and immediately fell in LOVE. I mean...where has Live Comp been all my life?! That, by itself, sold me forever on Olympus! Due to the fact that I just shoot for the fun of it, my budget is limited but I did manage to snag that 8-18mm and love it for star trails, long exposure shots, etc. Add in a couple of general use lenses (60mm macro, 12-45mm) and one long lens- the Panasonic100-400mm and I am reinvigorated with photography! The weight I carry now is POUNDS less which increased my walkabout times again. Until they come up with something lighter and better, MFT's will be my forever gear. Thanks for this comprehensive video!!

I appreciate sharing the M4/3 side of the conversation (I don't blame you guys for enjoying all the other systems, it's your job as reviewers and to be honest almost all the innovation is being done by everyone except OMDS and Lumix G side of Panasonic). I have been a M4/3 user since 2009 with Pany G2 and owned 9 M4/3 cameras and 22 lenses out of the entire system and I still love M4/3 for its small size and low weight. It will continue to be my main system but for the love of photography OMDS please get your shizzle together and fix that damn CAF performance and accuracy because I can't track my favourite people in the world: doggies with literally any of my PRO zooms and primes at any FPS with any of the AF settings for more than 2-3 images out of an entire track/burst. It breaks my heart to not get the best results for what I want the most. (Every other type of photography the OM-1 handles is perfectly fine and I don't want or need any other system for that).
@johngross5224Күн бұрын
I understand that micro four thirds isn't perfect as a system. I hear about it all the time, lol. I think it's strange that full frame photographers keep saying you can't find a good lens for mft when the system has one of the most robust lineups. And I'm not made of money but can still find decent glass for my budget. I've looked into other systems and to find equivalences to the kit I've made would be considerably more expensive and cost more in weight and room in a bag. Don't get me wrong, there's some really tempting systems out there but I think I'm going to keep my kidneys for now
@kennygo8300Күн бұрын
I very highly recommend the Sigma f/1.4 trilogy of primes. You have to get them used. 16mm, 30mm, and 56mm. The 56mm is a fantastic portrait lens.
@adosrealdeal7036Күн бұрын
Well, honorable mentions: Possibly the best portrait lens of all time when it comes to image quality vs size and price, the Oly 45mm F1.8, closely followed by Sigma DN 60mm F2.8. These two lenses are just special. So is the Panasonic 35-100 F2.8 you have mentioned. The Oly 75-300mm is just outstanding value for a hobbyist etc.

I don't understand the fascination with the 28-70 f2.8. A lens that goes from nowhere to nowhere in focal length, weighs a ton, and is stupidly expensive. I have a Canon 24-70 f2.8. Very very sharp, and 2/3 the weight of the Canon 28-70 f2. On a 1DX body it still managed to give me tennis elbow after shooting a day of community cross country runs. I can only imagine what the f2 lens would do. I had an original Canon 24-105 f4L, and while not being nearly as sharp as the 24-70, the focal length had much more utility. There is also no focal length on the 28-70 where f2 is particularly fast. A 28 f2? You couldn't give away a non macro 50 f2, and a 70 f2 is both slow and too short. With the noiseless modern cameras at even high ISO's, and the software that mitigates noise even more (DXO Prime Raw 4, for example) f2 has very little advantage, as far as picking up a free shutter speed to stop action. Are you going to use this lens at f2 all the time? It may well be a technical marvel, but there are many many lenses that would be more useful.

I really like my MFT lenses .. but sadly i have yet to own a body that can focus fast and accurately enough. My G9II is still just so slow compared to my Canon R5 So i hope that some day they can release a camera body that i can bring along and not have to worry that half or more of the shots will be out of focus.

I wonder if mfg's even consider bokeh when building a camera or if its just a side effect of the building process. I could see sharpness across the frame way more of a goal than a smooth buttery bkgrd. Would love to ask an engineer.

Can we get sharp portraits and landscape photos in day light and night time with XM5 without stabilization and non stabilized lenses, because all good sharp prime lenses are non stabilized? or Sony a6700 is good option instead?

Shallow depth of field is overrated, I used to love it, but then I turned 12 and kinda got over it. Ever since then its better to use smaller sensors just because you can shoot brighter but still control DoF well. Some of my best work were done on G9 at usually F1.4 and F4 which is like F2.8 and F8 in full frame DoF equivalence. And having that background in even in portraits seems to make the image more interesting, for video its ridicules to blur everything out to Kingdom comes.

Hi Chris. I'm currently using Olympus OM-D EM5 mark iii. Thinking about upgrading. Currently Panasonic G9 ii is available for 1700$ new and 1500$ refurbished. OM1 is available for 1100$ and OM1 ii for 1900$. I'm leaning toward G9 ii, though OM1 has very tempting price. Do you think it is a good idea to go with OM1? Thanks

What the 12-100 4.0 is for landscape, the 8-25 4.0 is for urban. The 1.2 trinity 17, 25 and 45 are compact, affordable and optically outstanding. I own plenty of RF lenes, a Q2 and a X100vi but I would never give away my OM1 and the named mft lenses.

My Leica TL2 literally just sits in the bag and never gets used, the lumix is that great. My go to lens for it is the LUMIX 20mm 2.7 ll. A low cost lens But amazingly capable! M43 needs more love, people would be pleasantly surprised!
