I forgot that he did this interview and absolutely denied betting on baseball. He also wanted people to get it right, he was suspended from baseball for betting heavily on football and basketball. He seems quite disturbed when people confuse his crimes. And, what's he don' at the racetrack?

Such a shame. He was going to be one of the greatest ever. He was also a great manager. Lou Pinella once said that Pete Rose built the team that won the World Series in 1990 he just was lucky enough to take over when he did.

@A Baller I like Pete Rose, but you are "correct" about his banning from the game, that rule is posted in "every" clubhouse in the league. And all Pete Rose had to do was humble himself to Bart Giamati, and MLB when he was busted dead to wrong, but he couldn't do it. Petey Ball Game got what he deserved, and knew better too.

What rules can infringe into your private life that isn’t against the constitution.? How about innocent until proven guilty? How about slander instead of a formal agreement that acknowledges no betting on baseball? This has shades of no substantive proof other than witnesses who are being investigated for more serious crimes the same way they did with Tonya Harding. Without their fabrications there’s no concrete proof they committed a crime. I could name more but I’ll let you recall your own instances where investigations were mishandled. If you can’t recall any then I have serious questions about your objectivity. So many lives have been affected by overzealous individuals that have abused and overreached their that it’s a stain on the constitution.

Not true...he was not a good manager at all...he sat top rookie prospect Nick E at 1b so he could play full time and break the record..he cared more about gambling than the reds...

@@robbie192 . You’re forgetting something. While Pete was manager he basically aquired all the players for the 1990 season reds. The year the reds led wire to wire. If I heard right, Lou Piniella said as much. He knew talent when he saw it. Because he was on winning teams others wanted to be on his. Marge Schott was just as much wanting him to be player/manager so he was expected to play. Nearly all the reds fans wanted him to play as well. Esasky could hit and throw well but I don’t remember he had as much range as some others. I’ve never heard anyone say Pete bet AGAINST the reds. As far as I’m concerned it just made him play harder. There ought to be a dividing line between those betting against and for their teams. I’ve never seen the Bible say Though shalt not bet. I’ll bet the then commissioner got pissed because rose shut down his bunter for the Yankees and he came up with the first thing he could think of. Why don’t they take a look at the possibility that he was reaching for something he could accuse rose of? He played for almost twenty years and no one raised the issue. Why then after Pete played against his beloved Yankees? When rose played in the all star games the American League rarely won. It was only after he left that the American League began winning. At least his betting wasn’t an artificial drug that made him develop arms like Popeye.

Because of gambling the Black Sox scandal almost destroyed the game. Rule 21 is posted with a long detailed essay to boot for a good reason. After being caught, for years Pete Rose denied betting on baseball, then says he only bet on his team to win, as if that makes it better. I like Pete Rose he was a great ball player with an engaging personality, but he is not bigger than the game.

At this time, he was still in denial about his gambling. They had him dead to rights. Special counsel Dowd, whom Giamatti had investigate Pete, said, The evidence was overwhelming. The phone calls The bookies The betting slips, and he still wouldn't cop to it. He just wasn't ready to. And the shame is, Giamatti was such a fair commissioner. He told Pete. They'd pay off the debts, if he came clean. He'd have to sit down for a year or two, reconfigure his life, and then be back in the game Still nothing. And then, Giamatti passed away 8 days later after banishing Pete from baseball, and he's never been allowed back in since.

he wasn't in denial about gambling. He admitted to the commissioner about betting on basketball and football through bookies. And he did reconfigure his life, as you can see in this video. The one thing he had a mental block about was admitting he bet on baseball. Pete Rose is a very stubborn man, very very stubborn. All along, I kept hearing people say "if he would just admit that he bet on baseball, then everything would be okay". Ha ha! It took him 15 years, but he finally admitted "yes, I bet on baseball when I was manager of the Cincinnati Reds". Then suddenly, it wasn't enough that he admitted it. Now it becomes "you weren't contrite enough" or "but how often did you bet?" and "did you bet AGAINST the Reds?" People are never satisfied.

@@ronfowlermusic He had years to get a 2nd chance, but he lied to everyone instead. Regardless, gambling will ruin any sport and if the players or managers are betting on their own games, the bookies will eventually own them and control that sport. Baseball has known that for over 100 years and in this case, anyone knows their fate if they try to get away with it but get caught. No 2nd chances on this particular rule. Pete has used his 2nd chance by continuously having the media talk about him and signing his useless autograph any chance he gets so some sheep could pay too much to have it. Pete's a loser in this life and he can hang around with Lance Armstrong in the next life (if he's lucky).

Interesting take, but I believe it was Giamatti's death, especially so soon after Rose's banishment from Baseball, that cemented the opposition from ever allowing Pete back into MLB, or giving him a shot at Cooperstown. Sadly, no happy ending, like Rose was hoping for at the very end of this interview.

LOL Dam Pete Rose is "always" competitive, "I was at Marion, the Number one prison in America" even though he was across the street at the minimum facility, he had to plug that in there; lol. He is wired in a way most people may not understand. One thing I agree with Pete Rose not so much the fact that he isn't in the HOF because on that one he got what he deserved, but WTF prison for what they nailed him on? Give me a break; most people would have been able to pay off their fines and back taxes to avoid that sentence. In this case the prosecution went after him because he had a name and was a fallen star. On that Pete Rose got a raw fucking deal.

I'm just about sure that we all know what is going to happen. After Pete Rose dies and is not around anymore, THEN Pete Rose will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. In my opinion the Baseball Hall of Fame will never be up to date or in other words complete until his legacy in baseball attached to his name is next to the names of the other baseball greats in the Hall of Fame. Its sad that he won't be able to enjoy it but that's the unwritten deal that we all know to well, similar such things happens in many aspects of life.
