This movie came out the year my parents got married, and they were really into it. I was born shortly after, and my parents had this soundtrack on a record. I grew up with this movie and music. This is my favorite song. When I was really little, the songs with Elliot's voice scared me on the record, since I didn't even know what it was supposed to be! I saw it when I was just a little bit bigger and I realized he was a dragon!

Thinking back on it i remember my dad doing the dance with me at the beggining where i was a princess and he would twirl like a ballerina one of my core memories of happy memories of him and i prior to my parents splitting when i was 7. Its amazing how a movie can bring back a flood gate of memories of a unconditional moment frozen in time.

This movie was my childhood when I was about 9 or 10. I’m now 24 and still here for it. Just finished rewatching it and found myself singing along to all the musical numbers. I know, it’s super corny, like real corny, but that’s part of the appeal, that’s the heart of this movie. Most of that is Helen Reddy’s soaringly beautiful vocals! I was also big on The Iron Giant around the same time, and compared the two loads (both take place in Maine, both are about lonely boys who befriend a larger than life character that protect them and bring them happiness, both have sly villains who want rid of the big friendly character, both have a tearful “I’m never going to see you again” goodbye scene). About that ending, the suggestion that Elliot exists as a dragon to befriend lonely children/children living tormented lives (which was undoubtedly true for the early 1900s) and lead them to happiness, is an unbelievably wholesome story idea, and elevates the whole film for me up a few notches! I’m digressing, I love this movie, and this is my favourite song from it! 😄💃🏻🕺🕺
