What I love about this is that so many bands of their era had to have a rhythm and lead guitarist. He just does both at the same time. For that reason he's one of the best of all time.

What you say is true , but what is often overlooked is john entwhistles bass playing..Pete has said himself. John changed the way bass is played , he plays the bass like a lead guitar...a virtuoso really...but I agree with you too, Pete rocks

the way he builds up a climax without the power of the rest of the band and rogers rock scream (in my opinion the best ever) and still manages to do justice to such an awesome song is outstanding. one of my favourite guitarists from one of my favourite bands. you fucking legend.

I am SO with you on this... I'll try to keep this short. SRSly - Just after @1:36 you can see him Start to "jam out" & by 1:50ish he's So into it... Then the rest of the song he just "Goes for It" ... It's incredible. and a bit sad that Mr. Pete, at His age, needs to continue to carry this Torch which should have been passed almost 2 decades prior... Anyway, My God - What an INCREDIBLE Performance! He goes 'Uber' around 3:45ish... i Triple-dog-Dare modern 'rock' Artists to be as awesome as he's being in That Moment! :D

The Who Is THE Legend that defined the 80s. I remember when The Who gave their farewell tour. We all were gathered at Hurleys here in Ottawa watching it on satelite TV. What a memory!!!

I have to agree. This is one of the greatest rock songs ever written. It was meant to be played at exactly this speed, not beat per minute faster or slower. Exactly at this speed. I rank The Who right behind the Beatles in Dylan in changing rock & roll. They invented punk, the rock opera, & heavy metal (you can hear it invented as they play the 15 minute version of My Generation on Live at Leeds.) Then they released Who's Next, surely one of Rocks classic albums, ranking with about four...

Pete Townsend really deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Hendrix, Page, Clapton etc, his influence is hugely underrated, as is the skill involved in his music. I'm yet to meet someone who can really strum pinball wizard properly, for example.

Frankly "Pipe" I believe him to excel all the others you mentioned, not as guitar virtuoso, but as the brilliant composer, lyricist, player and singer that he is! His voice is so distinctive that it never gets "old" and never gets misidentified, no matter what he sings!

I saw a youtube video of Pete playing and singing this one when he was younger, accompanied by John Williams on guitar, and I thought it was great! But this version is fantastic!! He was so good, I never thought he could improve with age, but this proves that anything's possible with Pete Townshend!

Very unique sound. This is a very tough piece to play. Lots of change up. Takes a very high skill level to play. Tougher than most may think. Great timing and rhythm. Switching between his chord progressions is genius. This guy doesn't get the credit he deserves as a guitar player. One of the most unique sounds in rock history.

Pete Townshends ideas and music are timeless. Quadrophenia has been an album I have listened to since middleschool and I still enjoy pulling it out and listening through. He is propably one of the best songwriters I have come across (many modern day "artists" only make shit). This song has more meaning than the media likes to give it. The people who dislikes this video where fascist right-wings with a mind as opened as an airtight tanks.

I take your point - it is obviously very difficult to compare guitarists fairly across genres. What I essentially meant by that comment was that Pete is to rhythm guitar playing what those guys were to lead guitar, which is something I'll stand by :)
