He wrote it after listening to Chet play The Thrill Is Gone on his 10" version. But that was before he met Chet, and he never actually played it with him. He told Chet about the song when he asked him to play the trumpet solo on Shipbuilding. It was only years later that he found out Chet had recorded it. His definitive version is from Live in Tokyo.

@@Horsemam3190 Good stuff, thx. I must have been mistaken, I thought they had performed it at Ronnie Scotts when Elvis interviewed him ... but guess not !!

@vv247 They performed three songs together for that film: I'm A Fool To Want You You Don't Know What Love Is The Very Thought of You. There's an interview with Elvis Costello, which covers that day, here on KZbin. Thanks for replying!

@@Horsemam3190 I have the whole thing on DVD somewhere. In the early 2000's there was this small but amazing theater production I went to called The Chet Baker Story , The actor as Chet was unbelievable he played and sang many of the best tunes as they acted the whole thing out. It was the best thing ever for Chet Baker fan.
