"Please don't play with it while I'm singin' this tune"

Thank you so much.... I have been looking for subtitles for these words for years. My English is very bad. I often tried to catch the meaning of what Chet Baker said

What's amazing is he's performing here about six weeks before he died. This probably contributed to his reaction to the sound person creating feedback on his mic while he sang the song. Looking at his body language, this is someone not feeling 100%. To his credit, he kept it together and finished the song.

Chet's fall from a ledge is under mysterious circumstances. He may have been in withdrawal as well.

The problem is with the sound technician! the microphones were coupling. There was no problem with the guitarist.

I think you are one of the few people here who put it right. Chet and this Italian guy Nicola Stillo who is actualy a good guitarist head some bumpy roads behind when this footage came along. Dont forget they where exhausted doing together speedballs (mixing Heroin/Coke shooting up) all the time. Over Europe they played nice gigs and good chemistry as friends. Please dont make a big fuzz that guitar playing on this is some how out off control. So easy only judging on people who strugling. At least the footage is dazling emotional and worth to see and hear. Thanks and GreetZ from Holland

Correct...sound guy. It's said in the book "Deep in A Dream" he would just stop the show and bitch whoever was on the tech end to knock it off. The guitar guy playing with Chet is his good bud.

I agree with the comments saying that the guitar part could be a bit more minimalistic, but overall it's a great performance on both musicians' part.

Please go and read or watch about Nicola Stilo. He’s an amazing musician, better than all of you for sure, and he worked and toured with Chet for quite a long time. If Chet didn’t like this version, he wouldn’t have let him play like that anyway…

True, and his piano on Blue and Green during the same concert was sublime. But critiquing a particular interpretation does not diminish the person or his or her inherent talent.

A.A. , i agree w/you. The above video is marked: Germany, April 1, 1988 - 43 days before Chet's death . "Early on May 13, 1988, Baker was found dead on the street below his room in Hotel Prins Hendrik, Amsterdam, with serious wounds to his head, apparently having fallen from the second-story window. Heroin and cocaine were found in his room and in his body. No evidence of a struggle was found..."

A guitarist can have a bad night or in this case a self-indulgent night. The guitarist is drowning out Chet's voice. How do you know the quality of musicians in this thread?

Me incomoda muchísimo la desconexión del guitarrista y del sonidista con Chet en esta interpretación. Fallar una canción tan maravillosa… Una verdadera lástima.

Got a debate going with a few people...is Chet pissed at the Guitarist or sound guy....guitarist is busy DEFINITELY but you hear some feed back right before Chet says anything then again before he gets up? Just wondering....does anyone know?
@avtobus12342 жыл бұрын
yeah it's definitely the feedback, the sound operator was manipulating the loudness of the mics causing it as well as Chet's distress

Wrong. SO wrong. Read book "Funny Valentine" by Matthew Ruddick, and the books about Chet by Artt Frank. Then, you may get a clue.

@@ignorecorporatenews OMG there are books that don't agree with me !!! I must be "wrong, SO wrong" lol. Music is subjective, whatever Ruddick, Frank, Chet himself or even a a shrill ranter on you tube say. Art is whatever moves you, not what others tell you to be moved by. Enjoy your books dude

This just doesn't work with the classical guitar. The song is a minimal instrument piece and the guitar is way too "busy." Listen to the Tokyo recording and you'll know what I mean. Chet, as always, sings it exquisitely, but the accompaniment just sucks.

Talk about a guitarist trying to steal show, and in the process, compromising the performance, drowning out Baker's voice, throwing Baker's rhythm, and 'beat' sensibility off--the very soul of the song and performance tarnished. Don't try to steal the show, especially if you can't deliver and don't understand the song!!!!!! Join Milli Vanilli instead, guitar man.

You are wrong. Read the most recent comments on here and learn something.

Chet Baker himself agrees with my take; Baker asked the guitarist to stop. How can you argue against that? The guitarist's up-tempo rhythm was self-evidently out of sync with Baker. You're going to have to produce a very strong argument to counter these two points. I'll keep an eye out for your reply.
