Awesome video. I let my four red leghorns free range at least an hour or so every day. I hang out with them to keep the hawks off of them. True story. One day one of my girls came out from under my wood rack with a four inch moccasin in her mouth. The snake went through a very violent death. She walked around for hours with a snake tail hanging out of her mouth until she finally got it all down. I swear I thought I her her belch. LOL!!

My chickie babies love kale 🥬 they tried to devour my plant.. 😂 I said well I know I have to keep them away from my kale.. 😂😂 and I was wondering about grubs.. I’m all the time digging up grubs and finding in my wood piles.. but wasn’t sure if they would/could eat them.. I have humongous Grubs around here too.. I have almost got the babies pen built.. and been taking them in and out daily.. man they get so excited when time to go outside.. it’s so funny.. they know the routine.. 😂 and if I’m slow to take them outside they let me know.. 😂😂 my chickie babies are spoiled.. ❤

I have raised chickens for years. And many breeds. May I put in my 2 cents worth? The only damage I have witnessed to my hens by roosters is the feathers being pulled from the back of their heads. All other feather loss on their back, tail, & vent area are from the hens picking them off and eating them. Once they get a taste for feathers, they can become voracious at feather pulling for their own consumption. And like your Lilly, once they have picked down to the skin and blood appears, then they go to town on picking at the bloody areas until you can have very deep wounds with large areas of skin missing. I just sold a hen this week who lost so much skin from her back that I wondered if it could even heal. Well she did heal and was a great layer for 3 years. I do have flocks now that seem to only pick off the ends of the feathers leaving birds with a fuzzy look. As they continue to pick at them, they start to get feathers pulled out of the skin and that's when the blood shows up. I think roosters get blamed way too much for rough looking hens. My 2 cents worth.

I added rabbit pellets to my chicken feed, they seem to really like it and it is a way to add some greens even in the winter. I am thinking on breeding meal worms for both the eating of kitchen scraps, using their poop as fertilizer and food for the chickens.

Hey Pete, I was born and raised in Nacogdoches. Don't know where you are, but if you are in East Texas you probably have heard of Nacogdoches. I just found your channel. When I was a child, we had 4 chicken houses with 14,000 chickens in each one. It was a commercial project. Lots of work. Probably not the love factor that you obviously employ with your operation. Looks like you have some mighty fine laying hens there.

Great video as always. One concern though. The Australorp hens look like they are in a really bad shape. You might start losing hens due to injuries. Relocate the red hen to the Australop flock (during the night) and put in that coop the extra roosters until you cull them.

I thought about getting a zapper and I'm glad to come across your comment. After the bugs are zapped they fall to the ground? And, do you have it just inside the coop or do you also put one outside? I was worried about killing the good bugs, like bees. I don't know if the zapper attracts the good and bad bugs. And what about flies? Is it safe for chickens to eat flies?

Chickens will eat gardener snakes too! Funniest thing I ever seen! I was working out on the field and happen to come across a smaller gardener snake under some taller weeds I was pulling up. Before I could do anything one of my chickens eagle eyed that snake and snatched it up and ran off with it in the blink of a eye with the snake wiggling around on each side of her beak! Then the other chickens noticed what the hen had and they all went after the hen with the snake wanting a share too! Never seen that snake again! Sure surprised me though! 😂

Yeah, not only my chickens, my rabbits and goats love it, matter of fact I do too. I nibble on it almost daily and even include it in salads. I've had to separate and re-introduce hens. What worked for me was to take the top dog (one) hen and put it in with it and let them get to like each other, then add another hen and then another until when I re-introduced them there were several instead of just one. Yeah they all fuss for a while but they usually end up with a different pecking order and usually fixes the problem.

@S K, I second Pete's advice and would like to add that one thing people aren't considering is when you are working on a farm, you are getting plenty of exercise and spending time outdoors. Both are very good to help improve our health. Eating a diet of home grown veggies, fresh eggs, and breathing clean air will help keep you young far better than prescription drugs. Having a reason to get up in the morning (got to feed the chickens), and a sense of satisfaction that you are adding value to the world, also improves one's health. There are so many reasons you will enjoy country living as long as you pace yourself. Go for it and enjoy your life. Blessings.

There are many. Make sure they are a dual purpose chicken because they are usually fatter and have better feather coverage. My first batch of chickens were all babies-only 5. 3 were Roosters and 2 were hens. It was bad. One day I found on of my hens dead while roosting at night…I think she was mated to death. 😢. So I did some research and found to prevent this problem, you should only have 1 rooster for every 10 hens. They will be well protected from predators, but not over-mated. Any extra roosters should be slaughtered and put on the dinner table.

Mi sto divertendo molto a guardarli.

Nel futuro, potrei mettere reti per uccelli intorno all'area in modo che i falchi non uccidano i miei polli se decido di liberarli.

For the separated chicken, maybe you can use that one as your breeder hen to be broody on eggs? That's the most efficient thing to do... I mean she's already separate right? So why not?

In my experience you can’t make a hen go broody. They either want to or they don’t.

A broody hen can stop eating to keep the eggs warm and rotated. That is why broody poop smells so bad and so large a pile. I have seen mine double team the nest so each can have a meal and rest up until her next turn.

@@rebeccalwood5785 they are amazing. My broody hen put a bad egg out of her nest. It was either stepped on or just not developing, but she put it out front. I put food near my broody hen. I have water, too, just not close to the nest. She wouldn’t want that water near her eggs.

It grows wild here in the winter and early spring in east Texas. You can also order it online and plant it in the cooler months. It is very nutritious and you can add it to your salad.

Australian breeders developed the Australorps from Black Orpingtons. They kept the excellent egg-laying trait of the Orpington and mixed in features from the Rhode Island Red, White Leghorn, and heritage breed chickens, including the Minorca and Langhsan.

I can't believe you grow chick weed as a cover crop! We have that as a terrible weed here in WA. If you don't get every root and leaf out it will grow back. Our chickens free range half the day but still need scratch and layer feed.

food, water and adeqaute shelter. Those are the only 3 things you need. I have been raising chickens for over a decade. Anything beyond that are extras. Nothing wrong with it if you enjoy doing it, but don't over think this. They are birds.

You said they occasionally eat a mouse, lol try eating their own, eating snakes and any other meat they can get hold of, they also love stealing my dogs bones and pick meat over grain any day, the only thing they won't eat is fish.
