Appreciate Jim showing us what flea beetle, slug, earwig damage look like. Now I know why my lettuce and kale have those issues. The challenge is understanding what's going on in the garden and why. Jim's observations are gold nuggets! Nice clip of the cannabis in flower, such a beautiful plant.

I've done the same method of using organic mulch. I used dry coconut leaves. Less nutrition for the soil but worked well as a mulch and I was surprised of how much worms are in my garden. The compacted clay soil in my garden is now better.

If you use chemicals in your garden, I have a suggestion. Whenever I empty a bed, and before replanting, I cover it with food grade Diatomaceous Earth. It seems to kill the flea beetles in my garden that are lurking and waiting for the next crop. I hope this is a useful tip for you and others reading this comment.🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

Thank you Pete for the continued supply of videos with Jim, this one particularly hit home with me. I'm about 3 hours north of Jim in the western mountains of the Great State of Maine. My cauliflower looks exactly the same as his this year. I am experiencing everything he is, amazing really. Glad to finally see that he is actually human like the rest of us, his gardens are so awesome I was beginning to wonder. We grow a lot of pigeon peas. They pull up large amounts of nutrients from deep. They are nitrogen fixing, but most of all for you Jim they are a chop and drop of massive amounts of mulch. They last for about 5 years . We find them brilliant. Maybe to cold where you are

Run ducks through before planting. The ducks sift through every inch and cleans up grubs and slugs etc. Really reduces pest pressure.

I love the idea of grass mulching,but here in uk it seems to lead to slugs snails and other pest problems!,what seems to work better is mulching with compost,it may be that we have a wetter climate that causes this,so I try to compost all most ot my grass clippings.

I found this interesting as I live in Sarasota and battle flea beetles and slugs nonstop! Flea beetles really wrecked havoc on my garden last Spring.

It's interesting, having lived in Connecticut most of my life and now Florida, we actually have less bug issues here in Florida. Back in CT we used to see slugs regularly (no snails from what I can recall), ants, and the worst one especially were ticks, which I probably had 4-5 of them get me growing up and through college. Mosquitos are an issue in both places. Down here though you do get the occasional fire ant hive which you have to knock out. They're mean little bastards. Didn't have to deal with those in CT

Had problems with slugs, ear wigs, and I believe vine bores, which attacked my zucchini plants this year.

I put my winter plastic down over the grass one day to dry it out. Left it over night. The next day I turned it over and there were 50 snails stuck to the plastic. I ran and got the salt. Earwigs are alway hiding under my planted pots. I have DE in a ketchup squeeze bottle tip the plant, squeeze, move on. A light outside with a bowl of water under it will have lots of flea beetles floating the next morning. I feed them to my chickens.

Love you guys, and have been experimenting too.. Year 2 of deep hay mulch, this year was pretty much a dismal failure, haha. I'm in northwest PA, and it was cool and rainy all spring and summer, and the soil NEVER dried out. I planted corn, tomatoes, onions, peppers late because I was waiting for drier soil (never came). The slugs and snails were unbelievable, even chewed up the corn seedlings. The only thing that did well were potatoes, which I planted UNDER the mulch, but ON TOP of the wet soil. Any tips on deep-mulching in heavy-clay soils? Thanks!

Slugs live under mulch during the day. Go SLUG HUNTING! One one of the funniest times I've had gardening is slug hunting with my Grand daughter & a friends daughter. We had paper sacks, gloves, flashlight, & salt shakers. I had dahlias that would not grow because something was eating them. I could not see what was eating them during the day. Just after dark go out to your garden or flower bed with a flash light. The girls were about 8 and had never done this before but they made it so fun with their enthusiasm. When we turned the flash lights on we were all in shock. It was like soldiers of every size and shape and color coming out from under leaves & mulch headed in a 4ft wide path towards the dahlias. I couldn't believe it. We were laughing so hard as I taught the girls to pick up the slugs and throw them in a paper sack. They were great at it. I laughed even harder when the slugs started crawling up the sack. Oh I forgot, shake the salt in the bag quick girls before the get out. In 10-15 minutes the 3 of us had over 75 slugs in 2 grocery paper sacks. When were were done we put them in the burn barrel and lit them on fire.

Wonderful as usual. I want to make a point about the snails. Climate change or not. Those snails might very well have been imported. Not necessarily from a foreign land but from any number of things that travel. Be it bulk freight or a tourist. In no way am I challenging Jim's hypothesis. It's very probable. As an example. The islands north of the main islands of Hawaii are off limits without a permit. Even then the requirements are very strict. New clothes in original packaging that must be frozen for a number of days prior to accessing those islands. Very strick hygiene requirements as well. Pete how many time have you been in your vehicle going somewhere and a lizard or a frog crawled out on to the windshield? More then once no doubt. Climate change is real. Is it the cause of the snails at Jim's place? Maybe. Have a great day.

I had 167kg of tomatoes from 36 plants. Rather pleased as 7 were Bush type. Corn in tunnel was amazing, but poor in the garden. Same with my cucumbers, which do amazing outside usually. Win some, lose some. Celery is best ever.

Having just watched a soil science series of lectures, there could be something deficient with the soil life there. I know Jim feeds his soil with grass, but what about compost? A good dose of compost tea, loaded with bacteria, amoebas, and other good soil life could lift things - those bacteria make more nutrients available to plants, and healthy plants repel pests. Here's a suggestion - go to that local forest and get a small cup of soil from the top horizon, put it in water and apply it to the block. It'll be loaded with local micro life suited to your soil there. I'm about to do this myself here in Australia. Great vid!
