while imperfect, i thought the show did a great job of capturing the essence of this story, which is one of my all-time favorites. two questions that have nagged me from the books as well as the show: 1) if the San-Ti are so advanced, why is earth the only planet they are willing to move to? aren't there many earth-like planets they could inhabit without having to fight the species that currently reside there? 2) i know the sophons only arrived at earth a couple of months before they were discovered by all of humanity, but how is it possible that in all the time that ye and evans were communicating with the San-Ti over the prior decades, as well as their complete observation of everything happening on earth by the sohpons, the San-Ti never figured out that humans can lie until evans read 'little red riding hood' to them?
@LuckyCl0ver7 ай бұрын
my theory is that santi can also lie. Because they belive in science and in science you belive an theory to be true untill proven false. so the theory that is false is a lie that they believe in. This may be because they have to reach a general censes of a hive mind befor communicatin making it approved by everyone so more likely to be true and not a lie. but then the pacifist santi is the odd one out aagain.
@User-gx3sr7 ай бұрын
1) The san-ti are advanced, but do not possess faster than light travel or even light speed travel for large objects (spacecraft); they can only achieve a small % of light speed for their ships (in the first parts of the story at least). This is why earth is the obvious choice, it is only 4 light years away from Trisolaris. Other habitable worlds are simply too far away. 2) The sophons could be accelerated to light speed easily because of their miniscule mass, humans can even achieve light speed with particles of that size. Evans was communicating with the san-ti over the preceding decades, but not in a conversational manner, it would take 4 years for his messages to reach the san-ti, and 4 years for him to receive a response. The arrival of the sophons meant that real time communication could finally take place, and allowed the san-ti to discover the concept of lying through casual conversation with Evans. Lying as a concept simply didnt exist to the San-ti, so even if their sophons had observed it taking place before the conversation with Evans, it may not have been given any significance or been understood by the San-ti.
@mambaASI5 ай бұрын
@@User-gx3sr 1) everything you stated is true. But it also begs the question, why didn't the san-ti identify earth's star system as a potential new home star system prior to any communication taking place between them and ye wenjei? IRL human scientists are able to identify habitable planets in star systems several light years away. If the san-ti are several decades or even century+ ahead of irl humans in terms of technology, they would easily identify earth as a habitable planet (or mars for that matter after a bit of terraforming) especially given its within the closest star system to their own star system. This would have happened regardless if humanity contacted them or not, because the san-ti are desperately searching for a new home anyway and our star system is easily candidate #1 from their perspective...
@User-gx3sr5 ай бұрын
@@mambaASI great point that I hadn’t considered, I don’t have an answer for that. Perhaps the answer lies somewhere related to the aliens unstable star system, or maybe the aliens would have come to Sol regardless of it being inhabited or not, as it was their only option due to distance, communication with Ye simply was to assist them with preventing human technological progress, which if left unchecked would have been fatal to the San-Ti. Point being that maybe they did identify earth as habitable, but only now do they have the means to escape to it.

I haven't read the books but found the Netflix production interesting and pretty stimulating. As a physicist, I found the portrayal of the scientist a bit out of the norm (most physicist are more socially awkward than the ones in the series). Also, I struggled accepting the "sophon" as a proton size computer. I just completed the Chinese version of season 1 on Amazon Prime. That version is much longer and includes a slightly clearer story of the science (slightly). The Chinese series left me a bit more accepting of how the San-Ti (or Trisolarians) managed to get a quantum entangled particle to Earth on a timeline that made sense. While I suspect the Chinese version is a closer reflection of the book(s),, the Netflix version seems much more visually polished In the end, I could see the advantages of each production. I really hope Netflix continues the story. Either way, I suspect I'll get the books and read those.

Yeah, the Chinese version is pretty much a letter for letter adaptation of (only) book 1. Meanwhile the Netflix series intertwines storylines and characters from all three books set in the current timeline. Like Wade and the Staircase program first appear in book 3 (the character of Wade and the woman who was in charge of the program play much bigger roles in book 3 and they and their choices are much more detrimental to the human civilization). The revelation of the reason why Santi abandoned the ETO and the wallfacers are first revealed in book 2. Even the appearance of the Santi "woman" is a 1-to-1 relics of a character that first appears in book 3. But reasonable to include and mix and match storylines in the same timeline but also not stop the season on the first book as each of the books have an open ending leaving the reader able to stop and not continue the series and let their imagination run wild what will happen next. Meanwhile you cannot really do that in the visual media. I mean you can but not advisable If you want to keep the audience hooked to get the to watch the next few seasons. But I highly recommend reading the books. Book 2 is an easy 10/10 and I'm doubtful anyone will be able to do justice to the brilliance of the story.

One thing I don't understand is why the san ti are still so obsessed with particle accelerators; or if they're not, why Jin is assuming that. It made sense initially when the sophons were unknown because it caused science itself to degrade (defunding and shutting down institutions). Now that factor is gone, and experiment results that do not align with reality will likely be tossed, and resources reallocated to practical planetary defense research. Screwing with infrastructure, energy, destabilizing governments would stunt humanity a lot more than losing theoretical physics. Unless they want to prevent humans from learning how to unfold a proton.

Most likely, the san-ti understand, based on their own civilization's scientific advancement, that the more threatening scienctific advancements will emerge (directly or indirectly) from the field of particle physics. Hence why the san-ti are really focused on disrupting that science, and will dedicate more resources to that end. Also targetting other scientific work (for example auggie's nano fiber tech) that may prove useful for the humans in the future. Basically everything else the humans do is a non-threat to the san-ti is how I see it.

It’s challenging to tell the parts of the story from their perspective without showing us what they look like. Unless they just don’t show their perspective. The books can get away with it by leaving it up to the reader to describe in their head. That doesn’t work in a visual presentation. It’ll be interesting to see how the show handles these challenges. So far, I’m impressed. They stayed true to the most important points of the story and the changes help move the story forward or set up an important storyline for later. I’m happy to see the show getting positive attention. I can’t wait for season 2!

I’m glad you also realize that sometimes intrigue comes from the unknown&that after sometimes is hyped up so much, it usually won’t live up to expectations. If they do show the San-Ti, they better go above&beyond with it or it’ll probably end up another GoT.

Two things as just a viewer of the show confuse me: Given the 2 computers have no problem killing scientists with the count downs at the start, why don't they just keep doing that starting with all the people on the Staircase Project if they are scared of what people will become? Also, why couldn't the aliens from what I assume the Centari system detect Earth given even by the 1960s we must have been lit up like a light bulb? Why did the signal need to be boosted by the sun?
@hoos30149 ай бұрын
The countdowns were just a bluff/psychological warfare. The sophons can't physically hurt anything. 4 light years is still a very long way. All of our "Christmas tree lights" diffuse into nothing shortly after leaving our solar system.
@freakmoister8 ай бұрын
[spoilers]Well the killings were done through utilizing humans who’re in the cult. By the end of the 1st book the cult was mostly captured or in the show killed on the ship. The Sophons cannot directly kill ppl, they’re too small 😅. Well ppl can’t detect us cause while we’ve been sending signals since the 60 the inverse square law will make the signals too weak to detect.
@lrmackmcbride74987 ай бұрын
Our radio signals are incredibly weak even on an in solar system scale. Compared to solar output they are nonexistent. Even with the best detection equipment our signsls would be swamped by noise outside the oort cloud. Only directed signals allow us to communicate with the voyager probes.

Perhaps a really silly beginner question but how do the scientists know where the san ti are in space to be able to calculate where to send Will’s brain? Was that mentioned?
@basspuppy1338 ай бұрын
Scientists in real life (and in the fictional universe) already have known the exact location of the star-system that the San-Ti are from for decades before they hear from them. They just only found out that there was actually life there after hearing that transmission back in the 60s. It's the closest star system to earth.
@Daneki7 ай бұрын
While I can't recall top of my head how they explained it in the show, in the book it's explained as this - the Trisolarans will take care of it. They knew of the launch (via sophon surveillance) and have the ability to collect it rather easily. Just launch in that general direction.
@vanhoumin7 ай бұрын
@@DanekiI wouldn't agree. Throwing something in the general direction into space to a location 4 light years away is a sure way to be off by a couple light years when the probe is set to arrive. The earth know the exact location of the Santi solar system and the Santi fleet obviously used the straight and shortest path between the two systems to travel the distance.
@mambaASI5 ай бұрын
@@basspuppy133 while this does make sense, it really shoulda been explained in the show at some point. Literally a 1 minute explanation, based on how long it takes to send/receive radio waves between earth and the san-ti, and deducing that only one star system known to man could be the other end of this communication pathway.

One thing on my mind here.. 2 sophons are on the earth, 2 sophons on the trisolarians fleet.. therefor the trisolarians doesn’t have any fast/stable communication going back to their home planet, that fleet is on their own.. all we need is stalemate for the meantime while we slowly progress

They didn't say they dont have more Sophons. Besides, FTL Communication back home isn't really neccery. Normal Radio wave is fine. On top of that, their home would spend most of its time in Chaotic era while all the San-Ti is dehydrated anyway. Besides, you don't exactly need an AI computer for Quantum Communication. A Simple QEC can theoratically communitcate a 1 bit. Spoiler The 1st San-Ti Fleet never made it to Earth.

@paulogonzalez48097 ай бұрын
My biggest problem with the series and book, lore wise, is why the trisolarians revealed the sophons to humanity. I know that the sophons are a narrative device, so the author can explore how humanity deals with an omnipotent computer looking all they are doing. But this makes zero sense to me. If they not revealed this, humanity would never know it's existence

I think the challenge for Netflix is to create a second season based on The Dark Forest and a possible 3rd season on Death's End. The big question is does Netflix want to go off on a tangent and do a second season not based on the 2nd novel? Netflix may be worried that they may lose the attention of the audience if they continue with the book series as the 2nd and 3rd novel go into super high sci-fi and has a timeline span of literally millions of years. It will be a difficult task for them to do the last two novels justice.

Seems like this is something that they're looking forward to. The CG wasn't bad in the first season so let's hope they pull it off. The event is only half the battle because they need to lay the groundwork so that it has the proper emotional weight. The visuals will be cool either way if they do a competent job but it could be a lot more.
