BenC No, in my honest opinion, tuning doesn't define heaviness; it's the riff structure itself. Just look at Cattle Decapitation, they're only a half step below standard which is e flat.

NorseIndi Amon Amarth is considered by critics as a Viking Metal band because of their lyrics but Johan Hegg mentioned in an interview that he says Amon Amarth is just a Melodic Death Metal band. But I do agree with you. I thought Amon Amarth was Viking Metal too.

Speaking from a vocalist POV, the higher version made me want to do more clean vocals, but this down tuned version made me wanna do more Lamb of God kinda vocals. They both sound heavy, but in different ways.

Up-tuned sounded way better, in my opinion. It stood out a lot more in today's down-tuning craze, and hearing a note that's actually the note it's supposed to be and nothing more is very refreshing.

+DarthUno This is my personal opinion on the whole uptune vrs downtune debate here. My two bits are simple. In my opinion he used a far better guitar in the uptune video than in the down tune video. In my opinion that makes a huge difference.

the only thing that changes is the bass content. "heaviness" is not a function of lowered tuning, it has more to do with the composition. The up tuned version sounds much better for me, because the tone is clearer and doesn't intrude on the bass guitar's effective range. As for heaviness? The riffs sound great in both, but it's not a particularly heavy song to begin with.

They're both different types of heavy. To me, the higher tuning makes it more thrashy, while the lower tuning makes it more metalcore-y, but it comes down to what you're going for, I guess. Either way, I love the "chorus" riff. So simple, but so good!
