This is the video of Peter Allen's legendary first Radio City, NYC concert, January 1981, where he became the first male performer to perform with The Rockettes and inspired a scene in the musical "The Boy From Oz". From the LaserDisc; good quality.

WOW. Just wow. I went to see this concert when I was a sr in high school. Few months later I walked by him on broadway & 63rd. I gasped loudly when our eyes met. He winked and said, "Thank you, young man". I couldn't talk, kind of half-waved weakly. What a dork. He smiled, sort of chortled, and half-waved back. Made my summer. In the late 80s I saw him in "Legs Diamond". I waited backstage just to say "Thank you". Didn't ask for an autograph. He shook my hand, winked and said, "Cheers". So, THANK YOU RICHARD. I found this tonight by mistake. I guess it was meant to happen. YOU sir, are the man. My heart is pounding like the kid I was way back in '81.

You're a class act for not overly fawning or asking for an autograph from Allen. Can you imagine if that happened today? The poor man would be swamped by people trying to get selfies with him....

This was the concert I went to. I purchased these tickets for a Valentine's Day gift for my then boyfriend, later husband. It was our first real date and we were both hooked on Peter from then on. Magnificent performance by a extremely talented musician. I sure miss Peter but still love his tunes and tears come to my eyes every time I hear his songs. Thanks for the legacy Peter...RIP

I saw him at The Paradise in NYC in 1975 or '76. Very small setting. at a bistro-style table with my girlfriend, sipping adult beverages while listening to this guy entertain to the hilt. His tribute to Judy Garland -- Quiet, Please, There's A Lady On Stage -- was an absolute show-stopper. I have his anthology and play it to this day, and that song is on it, and I can see him on the small stage, at his piano. It was such an intimate setting, everybody could go up and talk to him after the show. I did, just saying that he knocked it out of the park.

I went to a Bette Midler concert in the 70s and she introduced him as her pianist and let him do a song. That was my first intro. Then I saw him at Radio City. I miss his free spirited entertainment so much. I love and miss you, Peter! ❤️❤️❤️

Peter Allen was such a massive talent, dismissed sometimes because he could be so camp and silly. Not just this concert, but all the albums, from my fav, Taught by Experts (Leslie Gore and Dusty Springfield singing backup!), all the way through to Making Every Moment Count, the endless brilliant, moving songs, most of which most people don't know, and don't know he wrote if they do know the song. As Sydney has just gone into lockdown today for the first time since the one in early 2020, i've been wanting for some reason to listen to his music, so i'm listening now to Anthology, which is a great compilation of his best songs, one of which is Everything Old is New Again (once again, most people wouldn't know he wrote this - it's such a perfect gem of a song that you'd think it was written by Irving Berlin or Cole Porter) and it brought me to this video. He was underestimated by many, but those in the know - Judy Garland, Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, David Foster etc. - knew what a great talent he was. One of the greatest songwriters of all time.

I cannot get enough of this s-e-x-y man. I've loved him since my teens, back in the 70s. This is the absolute best record of Peter in his prime. A quintessential performer - he's got the music, and the soul. He is tireless. When he dances with his wild abandon, he lifts me along, and I feel as if I'm flying. Oh, Peter, why did you leave us so soon. Much too soon.

I saw Peter Allen in live performance in Toronto. He couldn't hit the final sustained note of I go to Rio,but he wouldn't give up and likely ruptured his vocal chords in order to prove to audience that he could do it. I am a vocalist and so know what that encore must have done to him. I adored him greatly, a fan

This song has such a signifcents to me I was book in a Studio in Unaversal City,Ca to record my first Vocal demo -I had no money ofcorse so there was this new technic called Vocal Elimanaton were they can drop the lead vocal out of certain songs recored by the artist I wanted to do " Fly away " by Peter Allen pro by David Foster .. They couldn't mix it right in a pinch I had to Choose Don't Cry load ..First never sang the song and as a Singer I try to relate to what The songs about or meaning ... With only 15 mins left in Studio time I thought about missing my family back in Boston and this sweet little girl I use to Watch when her mother would go to work.. Turned out to be one of my favorite songs Not knowing the origanal Vocal Arrangment was a blessing ..So this made the songs emocal moments so true ..

Thank you so much for posting this. I worked a block away from Radio City , knew about Peter, ( He was / his name was all over). What was I thinking?, at age 23, I never went to a show. I remember @ a month later. they held the Grammies at R.C.H. - Peter presented with the lovely Olivia Newton- John. Peter was on a roll being funny & Olivia had to real him in a bit :-). God, I wish had seen Peter in NYC especially in his earlier " naughty" days. A true regret. What a terrible loss, age 48. The man was brilliant. This was so kind of you to share. Thank you.

I just stumbled across this video, thank you so much! I saw Peter at Radio City in the late ‘80’s, what a phenomenal entertainer he was, truly. Been a big fan since the early ‘70’s, he used to be on the Carson show when he had the Duo of Chris and Peter Allen. Those were the days when he was friends with Judy Garland and ended up as her Son-in-Law for a while. I have his Peter Allen Live at Carnegie Hall CD I’ve practically worn it out! This was really a treat, again thank you! He left us too soon, he was very special!

Unfortunately, this is not the full concert. The full concert was actually 87 minutes long and it's only available on the VHS version. For some reason the laserdisc version is abridged at 57 minutes. I had to purchase a rare VHS version in order to see the full concert, which was worth every cent!!! It includes songs which Peter rarely performed in concert, such as Hit in the Heart. Other songs on the VHS version includes Tenterfield Saddler, One Step Over the Borderline, I Honestly Love You, Springsteen's Hungry Heart (which is really good!), etc. If you ever get your hands on the full concert please upload it on KZbin.
