Amazing. May the soul of Peter Bellamy rest in peace. The treasure he brought to us through his music, especially his revival of Kipling in setting so many of his poetry to music, is something we truly do not deserve. If our civilization crumbles I would be content if his work is one of the only things retained in our cultural record. Thank you for uploading this.

It was not part of their blood, It came to them very late, With long arrears to make good, When the Saxon began to hate. They were not easily moved, They were icy -- willing to wait, Till every count should be proved, Ere the Saxon began to hate. Their voices were even and low. Their eyes were level and straight. There was neither sign nor show, When the Saxon began to hate. It was not preached to the crowd. It was not taught by the state. No man spoke it aloud, When the Saxon began to hate. It was not suddenly bred. It will not swiftly abate. Through the chilled years ahead, When time shall count from the date That the Saxon began to hate.

@MrNU9985 жыл бұрын
This is an adaptation of a poem by Rudyard Kipling. To the best of my knowledge, Oak, Ash, and Thorn trees represent the more hardy and "old-fashioned" roots of English culture as opposed to the more refined nature of English culture in the last couple hundred years. It serves as a sort of calling back to a simpler time when England was more isolated from continental Europe and the world at large and had a more distinct national identity pre-Empire era. Hope this helps friend, you should listen to more Peter Bellamy too!
@Katesac5 жыл бұрын
I see reference to ancient pagan religion versus Christianity, calling out pagan midsummer fertility festivals. Sacred tree groves were an important part of many Celtish (and other) preChristian religions: "Oh, do not tell the priest our plight, or he would call it a sin, But we've been out in the woods all night, a-conjuring summer in, And we bring you news by word of mouth, good news for cattle and corn Now is the sun come up from the south, with Oak, and Ash, and Thorn."

@@HoIIandC This is pre Anglo-Saxon invasion of Britain. We can see this with the lyrics of "Elm she hates mankind and wants 'till every gust be laid" The Elm Tree is greatly associated with Celtic Mythology for it’s association with the Otherworld: the resting place of the dead and refuge for Celtic Deities as well as the Fae. The Elm is said to be guarded by Elves, for it is the bridge or passing rite to the Otherworld. But then again, the Elm is famously brittle, and will break easily under a heavy enough breeze, possibly hitting the unlucky man sitting at the bottom. If these were Anglo-Saxons this wouldn't make sense as they were Christians by their invasion. The Anglo-Saxons were the immigrants of pre-Christan England.
@HoIIandC2 жыл бұрын
@@friend4470 I understand what you mean, but the Anglo-Saxons conquered Britain through legitimate invasion, the kind that has happened for the whole duration of mankind. I can accept that kind of invasion. However, we in the modern world simply invite foreign cultures over here, pay for their benefits with our hard-earned money and then get berated for talking negatively about it. That is the kind of "invasion" I am not in favour of. I'm sure the Celtic Britons would not have invited the Saxons over, hunted for them, built their houses and simply allowed them to dilute their culture. I still think my original point stands.
