Amazing. May the soul of Peter Bellamy rest in peace. The treasure he brought to us through his music, especially his revival of Kipling in setting so many of his poetry to music, is something we truly do not deserve. If our civilization crumbles I would be content if his work is one of the only things retained in our cultural record. Thank you for uploading this.

Funny where Google will lead you. I did a search for the expression "gone to wrought" (spoken by an 11-year-old princess in the 15th Century), only to be linked to several folk songs. I browsed several more folk songs after that, eventually finding myself here. This version well-preserves the best elements of folk music, IMO. I'm surprised it's never been performed in the renaissance festivals I've gone to.

Of all the trees that grow so fair, old Eng-er-land to adorn, Greater are none beneath the sun than Oak, and Ash, and Thorn. Sing Oak, and Ash, and Thorn good sirs, All on a midsummer's morn. Surely we sing of no little thing In Oak, and Ash, and Thorn. Oak of the clay lived many a day or ever Aeneas began Ash of the loam was a lady at home when Brut was an outlaw man, Thorn of the down saw new Troy town, from which was London born Witness hereby the ancient tri of Oak, and Ash, and Thorn. Sing Oak, and Ash, and Thorn good sirs, All on a midsummer's morn. Surely we sing of no little thing In Oak, and Ash, and Thorn. Yew that is old, in churchyard mould, he breedeth a mighty bow Alder for shoes do wise men choose, and Beech for cups also But when you have killed, and you bowl is spilled, and your shoes are clean outworn Back you must speed for all that you need to Oak, and Ash, and Thorn Sing Oak, and Ash, and Thorn good sirs, All on a midsummer's morn. Surely we sing of no little thing In Oak, and Ash, and Thorn. Ellum, she hates mankind, and waits till every gust be laid, To drop a limb on the head of him that anyway trusts her shade, But whether a lad be sober or sad, or mellow with ale from the horn, He'll take no wrong when he lieth along 'neath Oak, and Ash, and Thorn Sing Oak, and Ash, and Thorn good sirs, All on a midsummer's morn. Surely we sing of no little thing In Oak, and Ash, and Thorn. Oh, do not tell the priest our plight, or he would call it a sin, But we've been out in the woods all night, a-conjuring summer in, And we bring you news by word of mouth, good news for cattle and corn Now is the sun come up from the south, with Oak, and Ash, and Thorn. Sing Oak, and Ash, and Thorn good sirs, All on a midsummer's morn. England shall 'bide 'til judgment tide By Oak, and Ash, and Thorn. the Kipling poem (so the lyrics) is certainly going to be public domain; but where Bellamy set many of the poem's he converted to song to traditional tunes, apparently this particular one is of own arrangement: "This setting is by the late Peter Bellamy, to his own tune", so who knows! It was not part of their blood, It came to them very late, With long arrears to make good, When the Saxon began to hate. They were not easily moved, They were icy -- willing to wait, Till every count should be proved, Ere the Saxon began to hate. Their voices were even and low. Their eyes were level and straight. There was neither sign nor show, When the Saxon began to hate. It was not preached to the crowd. It was not taught by the state. No man spoke it aloud, When the Saxon began to hate. It was not suddenly bred. It will not swiftly abate. Through the chilled years ahead, When time shall count from the date That the Saxon began to hate.

@MrNU998
@MrNU998 5 жыл бұрын
This is an adaptation of a poem by Rudyard Kipling. To the best of my knowledge, Oak, Ash, and Thorn trees represent the more hardy and "old-fashioned" roots of English culture as opposed to the more refined nature of English culture in the last couple hundred years. It serves as a sort of calling back to a simpler time when England was more isolated from continental Europe and the world at large and had a more distinct national identity pre-Empire era. Hope this helps friend, you should listen to more Peter Bellamy too!

I see reference to ancient pagan religion versus Christianity, calling out pagan midsummer fertility festivals. Sacred tree groves were an important part of many Celtish (and other) preChristian religions: "Oh, do not tell the priest our plight, or he would call it a sin, But we've been out in the woods all night, a-conjuring summer in, And we bring you news by word of mouth, good news for cattle and corn Now is the sun come up from the south, with Oak, and Ash, and Thorn."

@@HoIIandC This is pre Anglo-Saxon invasion of Britain. We can see this with the lyrics of "Elm she hates mankind and wants 'till every gust be laid" The Elm Tree is greatly associated with Celtic Mythology for it’s association with the Otherworld: the resting place of the dead and refuge for Celtic Deities as well as the Fae. The Elm is said to be guarded by Elves, for it is the bridge or passing rite to the Otherworld. But then again, the Elm is famously brittle, and will break easily under a heavy enough breeze, possibly hitting the unlucky man sitting at the bottom. If these were Anglo-Saxons this wouldn't make sense as they were Christians by their invasion. The Anglo-Saxons were the immigrants of pre-Christan England.

@@friend4470 I understand what you mean, but the Anglo-Saxons conquered Britain through legitimate invasion, the kind that has happened for the whole duration of mankind. I can accept that kind of invasion. However, we in the modern world simply invite foreign cultures over here, pay for their benefits with our hard-earned money and then get berated for talking negatively about it. That is the kind of "invasion" I am not in favour of. I'm sure the Celtic Britons would not have invited the Saxons over, hunted for them, built their houses and simply allowed them to dilute their culture. I still think my original point stands.

Possibly; although i'm sure people thought the same about punk rock in the 70's and 80's or boy bands in the 90's. It all comes and goes. Plus there's still many English folk clubs around, the festivals are still going strong, we still see carolers at Christmas and May Day celebrations. It might not be incredibly popular but i'm not sure i'd want it to be, folk has always had a small community, it is largely the expression of a minority and I quite like it that way. Kind regards.
