Peter Bogdanovich Recommends: John Wayne

Curious how Duke Wayne is the biggest star in movies, yet underrated critically. Spencer Tracy, in the 30s/40s, was considered, by common consenus, the best film actor in America. Brando took on this mantle in the 50s, yet Wayne's best performances are in no way inferior to those greats. Critics, even when they address his durability as an audience favourite, seem to attribute this success, to luckily working with titans like Ford or Hawks. Those great directors had the wisdom to know they had the right actor to deliver for them. Shame, though, that Duke was so voiciferous in his support for the ghastly HUAC witchhunts.

What was really ghastly: American and British and Jewish traitors handing over the atomic and hydrogen bombs to one of the great mass murderers in history. McCarthy's clumsy attempts to arrest these traitors and remove the others from power was noble. The Rosenbergs should have been joined by many other traitors on death row. Wayne had the courage to defy Jewish-Bolshevik power.

John Wayne has been underrated for years -I think in part because westerns are often underrated
