I have fond memories of R.E.M., so I hope my next remark is taken in the spirit in which it is meant. It always seems a bit silly to talk about not being so professional when you and your band keep showing up for the photo shoots, the video shoots, the interviews, the concert tours, and so on. There's nothing wrong with being professional.

Lol I went through that phase. Jeans were sold that fit tight at at the ankle made for wearing socks over. Kind of anti-bell bottom movement. Fun times! Of course while I was doing that my brother was wearing Parachute Pants and a red sleeveless shirt loaded with Zippers ala Chess King.

First of all, common for southern rockers to wear a little eye-liner. Elvis did it. Second, Buck says he likes rock to be unpretentious and here he cites U2's grandiose stage politics and the spectacle--but REM's shows became like this by 1989.

Stipe in the early years acted camera shy and the rest of the band spoke quite a bit, but toward the end he was basic spokes man and the rest took back seat to him. Then once he was tired of it, just quit. Its so obvious Buck and Mills would still be loving it to play,(which they do as well as Bill Berry called the Minus5, but its went no where near recording or hits) but Stipe vowed he will sing again, but never with REM...
