Cook was completely sloshed at the start, and the relaxed cynical even nasty Cook is the best. When he felt he needed to compete with upbeat witticisms it made him anxious and self-doubting. The younger Cook never had those doubts and was viciously satirical.

Proof that bulging overconfidence and zero self-awareness can, when displayed consistently, get a person with no discernible talent or ability not very far, really. If O'Brien didn't exist, this show would be the prime example of the axiom.

@stechriswillgil36863 жыл бұрын
PC is a funny English wag and raconteur , no doubt about. But a lot of his persona is alcohol induced and his relaxed demeanour stems from the fact that he has substantial inherited wealth. Dudley Moore was a working class , gifted lad but had no money. Cooke lost control of Moore when he went to LA to make $$$$ , and then began to resent his earned success and was jealous.

On the contrary. He knew perfectly well that he was trapped by the alcoholism which had eroded his talent. At the time of this interview (1993) I used to see him occasionally at AA meetings in Hampstead (where he lived at the time). He used to ramble about his drinking but never showed any capacity to deal with it. It's hard for wealthy celebrities who are "celebrated" for habitual intoxication to reach the sort of "rock bottom" crisis that sometimes triggers recovery.

It's absolutely true. Furthermore I could say more but won't as it would involve mentioning both someone close to PC and someone else involved. As for the "anonymity" issue, well the subject's long dead. Every biography deals with these sort of personal issues. I can't do any harm to clarify the context of lives like his - people tend to idolise celebrities on the basis of their public persona whereas the underlying reality is frequently tragic. In the same area and around the same time period I also witnessed a little of the final years of Viv Stanshall who, although obviously suffering from severe psychological problems (which often, in fact almost invariably, accompany addiction) was also struggling with alcoholism, which led to one of the most miserable deaths to have come to the attention of the public. And then, by contrast, we have the Russell Brands of recovery. One of the unfortunate by-products of the 12-step religion is the frequent appearance of a sort of inflation where the individual believes they have glimpsed the secret, if not of the universe, of all social and political phenomena. STFU Russell.
